Bible Reading

Paul to a young pastor named Titus, who was struggling to lead a church on the island of Crete.
Letters to the young pastor; 1st Timothy, Titus, 2 Timothy
Trying to only step out of Luke, for good reason. This is a good reason.
Not just to honor mothers but to take the opportunity to highlight the need for all women to live their lives in a way that would help this world see the value of God’s Word.
Titus 2:2,6 will be our Text, Lord willing, for Father’s Day.
Titus 1:10–2:5 (KJV)
10 For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:
11 Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.
12 One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.
13 This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;
14 Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.
15 Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.
16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
1 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
2 That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
Those were some of the concerns behind Paul’s letter to Titus.
•  How are believers supposed to think and act in such times?
•  How can we keep from being deceived by false doctrine and teachers?
•  How can we pass our faith on to the next generation, rather than seeing it become extinct?
•  How can the church not just survive, but thrive, in a world that is hostile to our faith?
•  How can we effectively fulfill our mission to reach a corrupt world with the beauty of Christ’s gospel?
Our understanding of God’s Word will be greatly shaped by how the mother’s in our lives live out their faith.

Sermon Introduction

The women in our lives take on the responsibility of making things look pretty.

This place would look very different without their influence.
We would look very different without them.
My mother always like to see me in a new and different color suit on Easter. (purple, green)
After service when if you get a picture with your mother, us dad will be ready to move on before they do.
The world is blessed by their obsessive desire to be seen the best they can. Christian woman have a much higher and sacred calling. It was stated in verse 5. Titus 2:5 “5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.”

The Challenge

As with all privileges it comes with incredible challenges.

Titus 1:11-12 11 Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake. 12 One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.”
Even the news casters of the world knows our world is in trouble.
I could turn on the news for a moment; but we might not agree on who to listen to, or agree with their commentary, or even know if what they are telling us is even true.
We live in a time where there is a war on truth.
Our children need help knowing how to navigate this world and to be identify what is truth. This is a whole church effort.

Doctrine is to change our lives

Titus 2:1 “1 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
Doctrine is not just for a select few in the church to argue over.
It is the teaching of God’s Word that should be shaping how we live our lives.
Do not settle for a wimpy theology. It is beneath you. God is too great. Christ is too glorious.

Doctrine Matters

Story from Adorned; Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth / Husband is afraid of heights but is a builder. He takes his time to make sure the ladder is always level.
Paul addresses doctrine before laying out specifics of our practice, and he does so for a good reason.
Doctrine—what we believe—is foundational to how we live
Gift: Doctrine Matters

Role of influence

Titus 2:3 “3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;”
All of you are “older and younger”. The aged woman are those older than others with influence.
EF Brown pastor in Northern India answering “What is most needed most in the churches of India.” His answer “More grandmothers!”
Spiritual Mothering: When a woman possessing faith and spiritual maturity enters into a nurturing relationship with a younger woman in order to encourage and equip her to live for God’s glory.

Live in a reverent manner.

Titus 2:3 3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;”
Neither gossips or drunks.
Apparently this was a common issue among the women of Crete.
I don’t know if they had shows called “House Wives of Crete or social media posts of women bragging about drinking wine while tolerating their kids”

Sacred Duty

Titus 2:3 “3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;”
“Charge the older women to be in demeanor such as befits those who are engaged in sacred things.” - Barclay
This is a sacred calling.
If you’re a wife, serving your husband is a sacred duty to be carried out with devotion and intentionality, out of reverence to God.
If you’re a mom, tending to your children’s needs is a sacred duty, a daily offering to the Lord in whose presence you serve.
If you work outside your home, the performance of your responsibilities, however insignificant they may seem in the big picture, is a sacred duty, carried out in plain view of the Lord as an act of worship.
If you’re a student, applying yourself to your coursework is a sacred duty, as is your participation in class, your commitment to integrity, and the sacrifices necessary to make the most of your training.
If you’re retired or unemployed, single or widowed or childless, your daily tasks and relationships are your sacred duty, to be carried out as a woman who lives and breathes and walks in God’s presence.
This older woman sees life, all of life, from God’s viewpoint and understands that even the mundane routines of life are important to God…. Watch her walk through her day in order to see what is next to God’s heart. Her life revolves around things that matter to Him. - ROCHELLE FLEMING

Teaching what is good.

Titus 2:3 “3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;”

Teacher of good things.

Proverbs 31:26 “26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.”
Words should be to build up those around them.
We have choices to make in how we will use our voice. As believers we should be “discreet”
Discreet: careful and circumspect in one's speech or actions,
Contrasted with not being someone who is a “false accuser”
Not only does slander hurt others; it also reveals contaminants in our own hearts such as
Pride—the desire to make ourselves look better, smarter, more together, and superior, if only by making another person look worse by comparison.
Envy—resenting another’s position, connections, success, family, talents, possessions, or reputation.
Critical spirit—the tendency to be judgmental, to jump to conclusions, to secretly hope others will fail.

In the cultural battle for truth, mothers are on the front line.

If you’re an older woman, teaching good things to younger women is part of your job description. God has a purpose for you in this season of life that is vital and that no one but you can fulfill.
And if you’re a younger woman, this passage raises important questions for you: Who are you learning from? Who are your teachers? Are they mostly your peers? - Go here the tik-tok of a rocking chair.

Not another burden, but a joy

Hebrews 5:12 “12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.”
But this mandate is not intended to weigh us down with one more obligation, one more burden to be borne.
God is offering us the incredible privilege and joy of engaging with Him in molding lives into the likeness of Jesus, adorned by sound doctrine and ultimately making the gospel beautiful in the eyes of all around.
Not given to much wine.
Slaves to much wine” represents a mindset of overindulgence that leads invariably to bondage
Expresses a desire to escape.
Is our life temperate? Is it fruitful and productive and bounded by godly ways of thinking?
Are we just taking our ease, indulging ourselves, mindlessly doing whatever brings us pleasure or numbs our pain?
I believe these questions have application to the use of entertainment and social media in our lives. Young women need an example in how to to be self-controlled and not given to these things in life
Godly advice from a mother.
Proverbs 31:5 “5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.”
Knowing how strong drink can dull the senses, slow the mind, and cloud good judgment, this mother warns the young prince about anything that could render him ineffective or cause him to become an oppressive, insensitive leader.
Drunkenness is not for Kings Proverbs 31:4 “4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:”
It is becoming to a mother either.

Example to the next generation in your home.

There is no place like home.

Titus 2:5 “5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.”
Equality and spiritual standing before God as brothers and sisters does not negate God’s creation ordinance concerning the role of husband and wife inside of the family.
By neglecting the God-given priority of her marriage and home, she becomes more vulnerable to temptation and to dishonoring the Lord.
The women who causes so much trouble in Proverbs 7 is said to have feet that are never at home. Proverbs 7:11 “11 (She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house:
Our homes, imperfect as they are, should be a reflection of our eternal home, where troubled souls find peace, weary hearts find rest, hungry bodies find refreshment, lonely pilgrims find communion, and wounded spirits find compassion. - Jani Ortland

False teaching hurts our homes.

Titus 1:11 “11 Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.”
All lies hurt people. Lies toward family hurt many.
No matter the circumstances or season of life the home still matters to the godly mother.
Unsure of the nature of the false teaching that was hurting the homes in Crete. But let me address a common lie today; The work women do at home is not of real value.

Gigantic Function of a mother in life

Babies need not to be taught a trade, but to be introduced to a world. To put the matter shortly, woman is generally shut up in a house with a human being at the time when he asks all the questions that there are, and some that there aren’t.
How can it be broad to be the same thing to everyone, and narrow to be everything to someone? No; a woman’s function is laborious, but because it is gigantic, not because it is minute. I will pity my mother for the hugeness of her task; I will never pity her for its smallness.

Make much of you Word of God with your life

Titus 2:5 “5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

Example of Tabitha

Acts 9:36 “36 Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did.”
Here was a woman whose relationship with Christ moved her to pour out her life in practical acts of kindness toward those in need.
They are such a gift to this world.
You know how this story goes. People mourned the loss. The community felt the loss.
Giving no on anything to accuse. Titus 2:8 “8 Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.”
Many of you can think of that type person. We are better for it. Though like Tabitha they may not have their days extended. They passed unto us a Living Book.

Summary

I am certain there are many joys found in motherhood.
Luke 11:27-28 “27 And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. 28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.
The joy of being a mother, an aged woman, a young woman, a man, a young man is living according to God’s design for our lives.
Living a life that makes much of the Word of God is a sacred and high calling.

Response

Maybe today God has softened your heart as you remember the truth of God’s Word and by whom you have learned them.
Moms. Thank you for holding us tight. We also need you to hold the Bible equally tight.
As a church we desperately need the example provided through Godly women.
