Luke 7:19-30

Theme: Jesus the Life
Key verse: v.12
50 verses; 1,209 words
Grade level: 3.6
Outline:
I. Curing. Vs.1-10
II. Conquering. Vs.11-18
III. Commendation. Vs.19-30
IV. Condemnation. Vs.31-35
V. Capacity. Vs.36-50
In prison we find a man of God…
Defeated.
Depressed.
Discouraged.
John’s disciples wanted to help him as anyone in their position would.

I. What They Followed. v.19

19 And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
John’s doubts about the identity of Christ were inspired by the fact that he was in prison and that Christ had done nothing to get him out. (Butler)
This is the forerunner of Christ!
Full of the Holy Ghost in his mother’s womb.
Lept inside when pregnant virgin Mary came near.
Pointed Jesus out to the world.
Baptized Christ then began to decrease.
How would you feel in the same situation?

II. What They Said. v.20

20 When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

III. What They Saw. v.21

21 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.
Jesus healed them physically.
Jesus healed them spiritually.

IV. What They Heard. vs.22-23

22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.
The proof can be divided into six distinct categories.
light. “The blind see.”
legs. “The lame walk.”
laundering. “The lepers are cleansed.”
listening. “The deaf hear.”
life. “The dead are raised.”
lifting. “To the poor the gospel is preached”
This last item was especially significant, for it was prophesied that the Messiah would minister to the poor (“meek” in Isaiah 61:1), which was a contrast to the practices of that day.
23 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
“Offended” -
To displease; to make angry.
Proverbs 18:19 KJV
A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.
To disturb, annoy, or cause to fall or stumble.
Psalm 119:165 KJV
Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.
There are a number of things that can offend one about Christ if he views Christ only from the present cicumstances and values of the day. (Butler)

V. What They Missed. vs.24-30

24 And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
There will be plenty of praise and honor in heaven, but on earth the servant of God may receive more bricks than bouquets. (Butler)
25 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings’ courts.
26 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.
2 = testimony, witness
27 This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
The greatest words that could be said about a preacher:
God sent him.
He is God’s messenger.
28 For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
John 2:24–25 KJV
24 But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, 25 And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.
Note the differences.
29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.
Seven Scriptural Baptisms: (baptism is to be immersed or identifie)
The Baptism of Moses.
1 Corinthians 10:1–2 KJV
Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
The Baptism of the Cross.
2 Corinthians 5:21 KJV
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
1 Peter 2:24 KJV
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
The Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 12:13 KJV
For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
The Baptism of Fire.
Luke 3:16–17 KJV
16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: 17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
The Baptism of John.
Here in Luke 7:29 “And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.”
Identified the nation of Israel with their Messiah that had come.
The Baptism of Jesus.
Luke 3:21 KJV
Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
A one time event for the Lord Jesus Christ identifying Him as the Messiah.
The Baptism of Believers.
Matthew 28:19–20 KJV
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

Conclusion:

Pressure increases in our life, testing our faith and draining our peace.
Determination is drained by doubt.
Confidence in God’s promises are shaken like a shutter in a hurricane.
If Christ were to speak of you, how would He speak?
Would you be ok knowing that Christ spoke well of you because your work was complete and you were about to die?
