Released from the Law

Chapter 6 Summary

Romans 6:23 NIV
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
sin pays in the currency of death
there is a bond between sin and death
death is credited to any who sin
eternal life is a free gift
life is credited by Jesus Christ by expression of faith
Jesus is Lord in the heart, mind and on the lips
Romans 7:1–6 NIV
Do you not know, brothers and sisters—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law has authority over someone only as long as that person lives? For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him. So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man. So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. For when we were in the realm of the flesh, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in us, so that we bore fruit for death. But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.

What Authority?

Romans 7:1 NIV
Do you not know, brothers and sisters—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law has authority over someone only as long as that person lives?
another perspective taken by Paul to highlight grace
grace that leads to eternal life, to liberty
he is speaking to people knowledgeable about the law
he is speaking to us today
it is not about the law - in Christ it never is

Our Authority is Christ

there is no authority from the law over the born again believer
when we are encouraged to live by the law we are in the wrong!
Romans 6:10–11 NIV
The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
we are dead to sin = dead to the requirements of the law
we are alive in Jesus Christ = alive to faith and grace
the authority in our life is now to grace and mercy

Another Example

Romans 7:2 NIV
For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him.
Romans 7:3 NIV
So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man.
general principle of grace over law established in verse 1
verse 2 presents another example
it is not a treatise on marriage
it is a practical example to highlight the higher principle
death breaks the existing bonds that the law had
adultery does not count if the spouse has died!

Died to the Law

Romans 7:4 NIV
So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God.
in Christ we have died to sin
in Christ we now live in him and for him
Jesus was raised from the dead
this is the basis on our new life
can only be achieved through faith
we cannot comprehend scientifically or worldly the resurrection
resurrection is more likely than the randomness of evolution

Sinful Passions Aroused

Romans 7:5 NIV
For when we were in the realm of the flesh, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in us, so that we bore fruit for death.
this is our reality
in the way of the flesh we had sinful passions
we know that we were in death
more so, we actually bore deadly fruit

Serve in the New Way

Romans 7:6 NIV
But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.
Jesus is Lord in the heart and on our lips
we have been released from the law
the law being the written code - the old way designed to highlight sin
read the rest of chapter 7
work of the Holy Spirit in redemption
we now serve in the new way of the Spirit
full of grace and full of power
bearing fruit of the Spirit
love, joy, peace
gentleness, faithfulness, kindness, goodness, patience, self control
