Honoring God by watching our mouths. As we continue in our Series, in the Book of James, it is time to grow up. So this morning we're going to look at the book of gems and we're going to see how we can honor God by watching. Our father has bestowed your word now may your word not return void and may your word to you. Exactly what you have purpose for it to do in Jesus name we pray. Amen, powerful. So choose them wisely and carefully. Your words are powerful. So choose them carefully and wisely finish that sentence from me. If you would sticks and Bones will break my bones but words will never

Never harm me. Have you ever heard this one? Even a ten-year-old knows that this is not true but people repeat that statement over and over. They will say that steaks and Bones will break my bones but words will never break me that is so not true. Words are powerful. Maybe? Even as powerful as physical Acts

An unkind word can crush, somebody, Spirits, an unkind word and make you comfortable, and unkind words can make you feel shame for so long. In your life words are really powerful. So when people say Sticks and Stones can break my bones, but words will never harm mean. That is totally not true. Just read James chapter 2 verse 14 through 26. What was going on during the chapter receive? When people don't have much to do when they not doing good works remember fakes faith without works is what Dad? They do a lot of talking So that's why. Now as we get to the Book of James, we will see what God has to say. What Jim has to tell us about watching our mouths as Believers, we need to be busy doing. Good works not talkin. So member James 1:19 says know this, my beloved brother is your favorite verse in the text, right? Let every person be quick to hear and slow to speak and be slow to anger. And then in verse 26 of chapter one it says if anyone thinks he is religious and does not read all his but the thieves he's hard to Sportsman's, religion is worth it. So obviously the church that Jim's was riding to the people that Jen's was writing to fellow believers. They had a problem with what Their tongues that word their mouths. They had a problem babe, could not stop running their mouth instead of being busy doing good works. Helping people who are in need. They were talking much more about them instead of helping them. So that's why I now in chapter 3 gems is responding directly to that problem in the church would jams is now telling them a get it together. The Gem stores 3:1 it says not, many of you should become teachers my brother's for, you know, that we will teach will be judged with greater strictness. Why is James going there does? The tractor starts very weird that it's talking about, not many of you should be teachers, were just talking about faith without works. Is dead because Jen Is attacking the false teachers of the day where they were telling people. As much word saying the word But no Deeds, no action be but a jams years trying is coming and telling them. It's not just words, you have to be in the word. You have to say the word, but you also need to show it. You also need to prove it by your Deeds, by your actions. So here it says, not many of you should be teachers. My brother's though, those false teachers James is telling them, not many of you should be teachers now, be careful because for, you know that we will teach will be judged with greater strictness. Scripture tells us teachers, people like me, I will be judged more severely on Judgment Day because of because I teach because I can easily people astray or lead them to the truth. So, because of that, God says people like me, I will be charged with greater strictness and it says for we all stumble in many ways and if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to brittle his whole body. I think Jim's, that's my personal opinion is using some. A hyperbole hear you saying in a nutshell, is like a. If you can master your tongue, you can tame a chicken control. Its name says, you will Master everything else you see in Matthew 12:37. It says full by your words, you will be justified. And by your words said with me, you will be Cumberland. C, h word are very important and all of you here, if you go back in your memory, you can think of something very hurtful that somebody said to you. At one point, you can remember it word for word. Even though the person who said it to you never gave any thought to it. It stays there words are powerful. So we need to be careful in the way that we use our words. Because how are we going to be judged by our words? Not only by our actions from last time we were in Chapter 2, but we were also be judged by our words Proverbs 19 1019 put it this way when words are many transgressions is not lacking, but whoever restrains, his lips is Freaking. So James is saying the less you speak Proverbs actually saying the less you speak. Better. It is true that I met you. I never met some people that did Baylee ever say anything. They just listening listening, but when they finally open their mouth, Everybody's just leaving in because they know what they going. Paying attention to what is being said.

But when he gets ready to open his mouth, everybody just leaning because they know it's going to be some wisdom, you see what was really in control of that room. Was it the person leading the meeting? I know that person was very quiet in the meeting because at the end of the day, that's what everybody was going to follow. Everybody was going to see what that person had to say. You think the next time you're in a meeting, be very quiet. Take notes so you're not the one that just controlling the meeting, you keep talking back and forth, but when you have something to say, it's actually measured K actually has depth or what you have to say you with me. Are you not with me? Okay, 3 it says, if if we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. So Jim is, using some imagery, is your germs is using six of them in the texture. So the first one talking about putting bits in a horse's mouth, just like we read in Psalm. Mowbray towing a horse mouth. Then look at the ships also do. They are so large and are driven by strong winds. They are Guided by a very small brother wherever the will of the pilot, the wrecks. So James is saying, I don't let you know, just B, you put in the horse's mouth. Helps you to direct them where they need to go. Same thing for big ship and just a small brother, that's turning it, wherever that it means, Oh, that's what the pilot uses suggested. Using some imagery easier. If you can control your tongue, your words, everything else in your lives will follow, if you can control your tongue, your words, everything else in your lives will follow. Impulsive words can shipwreck once life.

You believe this, can you pick up some politicians that I've Shipwrecked their lives? Because of what they say. But somehow some people, like having popular inflammatory speech, this impulsive word can shipwreck one's life. So we have to be careful what we say, verse 5 & 6 also, the tongue is a small yet. It boasts of great things how great a forest is set, Ablaze by such a small fire and the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. So James move from B in horse's mouth to Ruther on a ship now, talking about fire. That's about a little thing. Our tongue is so powerful gems as to use. Six different imagery for us to really get it so that Jim can tell us a, your tongues are powerful, some words that you speak. They are very inflammatory. They bring fire. See people go into Wars because of what words somebody said and it move up to the chin foodshion and then next thing, you know, you have world wars because the words in aggressions and the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness, the tongue is said, among our members standing, the whole body sitting on fire the entire course of life and set on fire by hell. So James is saying hey hey hey be careful with your tongue because what you say is going to stay in your whole body met somebody with a very filthy mouth. Does that stain their whole body? Because that's how people sees them, right? That's just how people see them. So James is saying be careful what you say or if you met somebody was very toxic, okay, they're always gossiping talking about people, what happened? What are they known for? What are gases or just stands? There are old, they are whole reputation, that's why they are known for. So Jim's the saying be careful, the tongue is among our members staining. The whole body sitting on fire the entire course of Life. Some of us and some people have ruined their life because of their words because of what they have said and set on fire by hell. So Jim's the saying you're referencing a few actually will. Look at that verse together. We're saying that ate your words can get you into hell because of what you say I'll show you the verse in Matthew. She worth all like fire and have tremendous destructive power. Your words are like fire and they have tremendous destructive fire. So Be careful what you say. Your words can bring blessing to people to go with can bring life to people or your words can hair down people. So James is saying, choose your words, carefully and wisely, Matthew 5:22, say bear, I say to you, that everyone who is angry with his brother, will be liable to judgment will ever consults. His brother will be liable to the council, look at this, and will ever says you your words. Will be liable to what?

These are the words of Jesus.

So, if you don't take it from James, take it from Jesus, Jesus is saying, watch your mouth, not just James. Jesus is saying the same thing. Jesus, a you're worth context to do a hell. So Jesus is saying to you watch yourself be careful what you say to people you telling somebody or fool, you will be liable to Hell, Fire. Matthew 15:11 says, it is not what goes into your mouth, that defiles a person than what comes out of the mouth. This defile, the person you see. It's the words that we say, these other things that stain our body. It defiles Escape. Not what goes in, C words can destroy, one's self-esteem relationships, ruined, career or Ministry or marriages, see words are powerful. When people say Sticks and Stones can break my bones but words will not harm. Me. It is Wake up. It is because our words are very destructive and are seven and eight. It says, for every kind of bees and bird of reptile and sea creatures can be tamed and has been stained by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a Restless evil full of deadly poison again here. Jim's is using hyperbole here saying every kind of Beast and bird a reptile. Sea creatures, can be changed the same, but, but human being can tame the tongue. So James is saying, this is one of the things that is very difficult to do. Controlling your tongue, controlling your words, controlling your mouth. So James is saying be careful. Will be careful. Be careful with your words used self-control when you use your word against word, say with me or They would mean words are. Thank you verse 9 to 12. As we wrap up with it, we bless our Lord and father, and with it, we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. So, what's the problem? When we charge somebody, what's the problem here?

It's like we're cussing, God. Because we are made in woods likeness. God's likeness. I'm going to show it to you in Genesis. Let's finish here. See from the same mouth, comes blessing and cursing. My brother is this things are not to be does a spring pool for you. See it as the other imagery, Nana is going to be spring. Does the spring pool for a from the same opening both fresh and saltwater? Then again he gives us another imagery. Can a fig tree my brother bear, olives, or a grape. Vine produce figs. Neither can a Salt Pond, you fresh water. Sorry, you're with me. So James is telling us you're a, who's your words very carefully? You can be worshipping God with your mouth on Sunday and then cuss people out on Monday. So if you didn't don't even wait until Monday, just do it on Sunday afternoon, just leave it to get in the car and then they just turned in their kids or somebody feet does the saying you can be worshipping God with your mouth on Sunday and then cuss people out on Monday because I'm gossiping tearing people down taking down, people include talking down to people including kids must be avoided. James is saying that all those behaviors we need to avoid them off with me big man. How in our image, after our likeness and let them have dominion over the fish of the season, over the birds of the heavens. Over the livestock and over all the Earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the Earth. So God created man in his Send with me, God created, man in his own image, in the image of God, he created him male and female, he created them. So the writers very intentional 26. You see, we were made in the likeness and image of God in 27, you hear it. How many times 2 times he saying, created in his own image in the image of God. He created us. So everybody has worth, everybody has value and we need to treat everybody as search even when they don't look like it. Everybody has worth. Everybody has value. See, we can curse people who are made in the image of God because there for everyone needs to be respected. I know some of you are thinking

I think. Michael Weldon, put it better from, it says sin has not destroyed the image of God in people including The unbeliever. We are still made in God's image, whatever state that we are in. That's why there's always hope for everyone until they died. There's always hope as long as there's breath. They can always turn to God. You don't believe it. Come on. John 3:16 for God. So loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever that's everyone. Even the Hitler who believes in him will not perish, but have eternal is crazy. There's nothing like it.

Paralyzed, but you turn to me at the last hour I will take you in. Remember the FIFA on the cross?

Soon, you will be with me in Paradise. Why? Because I'm his words. He believed in Jesus, and he professed that faith in Jesus. And certain human says, today, you will be with me in Paradise. There's always hope for everyone. The gospel is as good as the Reckless Love.

Remember, all the things you've done and God still loves you. Come on now. It may not be to the same and you know, level as some people that you're looking, but your Scizor still send. But God, still loves you. So we don't have the luxury of picking and choosing who deserves to be respected K because everybody is made in what is a match God's image of it? Both ways. As Christians, you have to be consistent on Sunday, on Monday, on Tuesday, on Wednesday. Thursday, Friday, Saturday. So, you are not a hypocrite You can't have it both ways. You need to be consistent and not be a hypocrite. Our words have power to direct power to destroy, and power to Delight. Our words have power to direct power to the Troy and power to the light. So let's look at the first one hour words have power to direct. So that's in verse 12. Verse for our words, have power to direct members started with a teacher, What do teachers do teacher's guide? Teachers direct. So that's why it's saying as a teacher, you need to be careful. I remember one time I had a student and he was just like my right-hand, man, and, you know, it will only take a few classes at a school and then I was technology. It was my kid that I was just training and all he did everything for me. I was just mentoring that kid. I just love that kid and then one day he just did something crazy and I lost it and I raise my voice at him. And that was just berated him for a few seconds. You know what happened after that? I feel so small.

See, I was his mentor. I was just teacher. And now, what was I doing? Was I speaking life to him?

I was tearing him down. Yes, he messed up really badly but as a teacher could I, you know, you'll get it together and correct him. Instead of bringing Hellfire on him. That's why Jim says not too many should be teachers, because we will be judged with greater strictness because two-room much is given much is required. C h words have power to direct. See, that's why the two imagery we had. There is the horse bits in the horse's mouth and the weather on the ship. You see those swing sets the course of our lives and other City teachers. Their words that I just affect them, but they affect others people who are listening to them. So that's why we need to be careful, our word asset, the force of our lives and that of others but a harsh word, stirs up anger but already have my slide to say those soft words when we are angry.

When you are angry. This is the time to pull Proverbs 15 verse 1 in the back of your friends with Denzel and then you would say it differently. What time are you looking at me? You must be crazy.

I want to retaliate, I don't want to give them Grace during that time. I want to show them angry. Isn't that how we feel when somebody he just got this mad gets under our skin? No, but problem says, no no two wrongs, do not make it right. Remember this one. Two wrongs do not make a dried because somebody did something wrong to you, that doesn't mean you need to do something wrong to them. You're with me. When somebody give you a harsh word, what is your response? Come on. Self and Sir a kind word. I know, you're okay, but we are here. Proverbs 15 verse 1 stuff. Answer turns away wrath but a harsh word. Stirs up anger. Not let me give you a disclaimer. Now, Proverbs are not promises since their me. Proverbs are not promises Proverbs our principles. Okay? Proverbs are not promise. You'll find some problems that are promises. But in general Proverbs are not promises. There are principles. So it tells you what typically happens. Okay. Have you ever given somebody a self insert and then they still act out at you? Okay, so so so this is not a promise. Okay, this is a principal surprise over here is telling us, typically, when you give a self answer, it will turn away wrath. So don't be surprised when you give us when you go ahead and give us a fencer, the person still lash out at you, okay? So remember Proverbs are no promises, Proverbs our principals. Come on, say it with me. Proverbs are not promises Proverbs our principles goddess but you will find some problems. Our principles, okay? But in general net K, Proverbs 18 verse 21, death and life are in the power of what The tongue and those who love it will eat its fruit hours. Powerful. You bet they are. I love the way Warren wiersbe puts it never underestimate. The guidance, you give by the words you speak or do not speak. I think that's the category that I fall in more the doors who do not speak. Sometimes you see it? And you don't want to offend people, and you do not speak it. And I've been a lot of us. That's where we fall. So we need to be careful. We should never underestimate the guidance. We give by the words, we speak or the ones we do not speak because no answer is an answer. The with me. Her father, may you help each one of us look God to speak the words that needs to be spoken and may you help us load guy to have the boldness to help those in our life. So let's bring it to a close. Proverbs 1, Psalm 141, verse 1, 2 3, David speaking your old Lord I called upon you hastened. To me give ear to my voice. When I call to you, let my prayer be counted as incense before you and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice. Look at verse 3. Set a guard over my mouth, keep watch over the door of my list, that needs to be our prayer every day. That's a verse to be memorized to be put on load cards to reboot on our phone screen, whatever you call it. You know, whenever you look at your phone set up guard over my mouth over my mouth, keep watch over the door of my lips. I'm going to send it to you guys. On the Weekly Newsletter, he has a very nice cover. You can just stay on your phone, okay? To say the guard, O Lord over my mouth, keep watch over the door of my lips. Matthew 12:34 says, you brood of vipers. How can you speak? Good when you are Evil 4, out of Abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. Then when somebody say something, I didn't mean to say it. we said that, when somebody tells you something the first time be lived in, I think Maya Angelou, So the Bible is saying, hey, what comes out of our mouths. Where is it really coming from?

It's coming from our hearts. So we got to be careful. You see when we speak something that we know that we don't want to speak. That means to be a prayer that God. Change my heart. The God, I didn't realize that even had that in me, help me to clean my heart. Just like Davis's. Give me a clean hands and a pure heart. Is the bottom line. Jesus needs to be Lord of our heart so that he can also be Lord of our mouths, you with me, Jesus needs to be Lord of our heart so that he can be Lord of our mouth because it's out of the abundance of the heart. We speak. Second one hour, Words of Power. I have power to destroy. Not only our words of power to direct our words have power to destroy. I don't even need to say much more about this one power to destroy. You think he uses the imagery of fire member? That only does the B in the horse's mouth for the rudder on the ship. But he also used the fire Is he the fire destroys the Great Chicago Fire? You know, that, you know, just a number on a boring. Okay. Just small little fire its spread in the entire city and that time the city of Chicago was built like an old wood over 17,000, buildings were destroyed and over 300 people died. That's the comparison to Jim's mix with our mouths. Our words, they are like fire. They have the power to destroy some Bible verse to help us Proverbs 17:27, wherever restrains, his words has knowledge, and he will has a cool spirit. Is a man of See we need to pray for God to give us a cool Spirit Proverbs 14:29. Whoever is slow to anger, has what great understanding but he will has a hasty temper. Exalts folly. And we need this message today. Here's the bottom line. Your words are like toothpaste. When they come out of your mouth you can't take them back. You can say, I'll take that back, but do you really think it back? It's already out. Everybody tried to take toothpaste and put it back in the tube.

Is the bottom line? Fire Burns and hurts? Like wise our words, they can I need to remove that. Can their Fire Burns and hurts, likewise our her our words burn and hurt. So watch your mouth. Amen. All right, last one. Our words have power to the light, okay? So not only our words have power to direct the course of our life has power to destroy the tower worth also have power to Delight. You see if our words are inconsistent, there is something wrong with all our heart. If our words are inconsistent, there was something wrong with our hearts. Remember it. Now, James use the imagery of the spring of water saying that it cannot bring salt water and nnn good water at the same time. Okay, so here James is saying, we need to be consistent K, would we see on Sunday needs to be consistent with what we do on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and so forth. In Colossians 4:6 says let your speech always be what that's another verse for you to On the Line Circle save put on your computer as your screenshot. Let your speech sometimes be gracious.

In the Bible is hard.

Let your speech always be grateful. Seasoned with salt, that means you carefully, choose your words so that you may know how you ought to answer. Each person, read your speech. Always be Grace gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you are to answer each person. The scriptures are telling us, we need to be, you know, there's a Bible verse in John that says pray without ceasing. Especially, that's what the scriptures are telling us today to be praying without ceasing when we are about to say. Some mean words, or God help me, help me Lord, help me. Lord, you do those popcorn prayers for just a few words, help me to be gracious. Lord, help me to be gracious. I don't want to be gracious right now. Help me to be great shoes. Lord, I'm losing it, I'm losing, I'm losing it. Help me. Help me. Help me, hold me back, call me back. Lord, I'm about to say, I'm about to say, Lord, Lord, I need you, I need you right now. I'm getting a different lord. It's not working. Lord Rescue Me Rescue Me. Lord, I need you, I need you. My sweet needs to be gracious right now. I need to choose my words. Carefully needs to be seasoned with self. So that I may know how to answer right now.

All of us need to be doing popcorn prayers. Also of the day, probably has the words of my mouth are deep Waters. The Fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook. Proverbs 10 11 says, the mouth of the righteous is a Fountain of Life. Our words are powerful. They can destroy or they can give life. Any of you here you been you were down and then somebody just spoke some kind words to you. How did it feel? Kate, didn't you just bring back in your life? You know whatever is sometimes were going for something and somebody spoke some words to you. It made all the difference in the mouth of the righteous is the Fountain of Life but the mouth of the wicked comes field violence. Proverbs 21, the lips of the righteous feed. Many, see what about words? We can feed people but fools die for lack of sense. Romans 15:30 to Soul by God's will I'm a come to you with joy and be what refreshed in your company fall is opposing our words can refresh people. So the bottom line is our words need to bring life to others. Not caring people down our words, me to bring life to others. Not tearing them down to, remember our words are powerful. So I'll words has power to direct the course of our live on other people's like our words have power to destroy a literally, an hour words have power to the light. So in a nutshell, the messages that life and death are indeed in the power of the tongue. You need to ask God to transform your heart so that your words can be life-giving and be a blessing to others instead of a curse on their lives. Amen. Proverbs 18:21, death and life are in the power of the tongue. And those will love it. if it's fruits and 1st, Timothy 4:12 says let no one despise you for your youth but set the Believers an example in Speech. Father, may you help us this morning? To choose our words carefully.

To be wise in how we use our words.

May I were the words father, be gracious. Now words be seasoned with salt. Make your words. Be giving me our words seeds, people may our words be soft. In our Words Be Kind me. Our words be loving May our words. Lord God. Help people get better. And that tearing anybody down. The father, it is our prayer this morning. If you would help us help us, Lord God to Love Like You Love. So that we can learn to speak kind words. To everyone, we come in contact with. Those who do the right thing. and those Wood. Don't The father, help us to be reminded all of us. Believers or unbelievers. All of us, homemade. In your image. So help us Lord God to treat everyone with kindness, treat everyone with respect. With our words.

Love you and we praise you. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen. I meant. What did you go before? God, you go in and pray right now in your heart, as Cameron and my wife goes and sing our song. Why don't you go in and pray in your heart now? And ask God to help you set a guard over your mouth?

So that you will know how to answer in every situation that you face in life. Why don't you go ahead and pray now?
