INTRODUCTION: airplane conversations.
Luke 24:13–16 ESV
13 That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. 16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.
That very day - Resurrection Day. Today.
Quick summery of Jesus being crucified.
HAHA - hey guys, watcha talking about? Jesus’ earns were burning
7 miles - 7 miles rant. Some have said that Jesus didn’t actually die, just got hurt. But how could he walk 7 miles.
Luke 24:16–18 ESV
16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”
ILLUSTRATION: Tyler, KJ52 story.
Probably supernaturally, but also if you just saw someone be brutally murdered you wouldn’t expect to see him too.
Maybe that is some of you, but I pray that changes today.
Why would Jesus ask a question? He is God, he knew everything, so it was to draw something out of them.
stood still, looking sad. - it stopped them in there tracks.
He got to their hearts.
Cleopas - weird name, but proof it was real. If you didn’t believe it you could go to Emmasu and go ask the guy named Cleopas! (probably the only one haha) - means a Vision of Glory
Hilarious - are you the only one who doesn’t know, while speaking to that very person. Dumb question illustration.
Visitor to Jerusalem - it was Passover, meaning that all 2.5 million are now walking back just witnessing and hearing about Jesus.
Luke 24:19–21 ESV
19 And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.
What things - “huh?” . Another question. Jesus is playing dumb. But it was to draw something out.
Jesus of Nazareth - a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word - they missed it. Maybe that is you? You think I am sure he was a great guy, but was he God.
hoped - the hope is still alive, because Jesus is still alive.
Redeem Isreal - to set them free, He came to set them free......
Luke 24:22 ESV
22 Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning,
women - no woman was trusted. If they made this up, they would have said a main.
Luke 24:23–24 ESV
23 and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.”
Now get this. They heard all that this morning, they were with the disciples, but still they did not believe. I know they didn’t believe because when they were asked they got sad.
Then they left. Wouldn’t you think they would want to stick around for just one more day at least? How could you leave Jerusalem in that moment?
ILLUSTRATION: of leaving a game to soon.
Luke 24:25 ESV
25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!
o foolish - why you so dumb?
slow to heart -
Luke 24:26 ESV
26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”
Luke 24:27 ESV
27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
Science speaks illustration
Luke 24:28–29 ESV
28 So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them.
urged him strongly - constrained him.
House guest -
Luke 24:30–31 ESV
30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. 31 And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight.
Why? My guess is they saw the wounds in his hands. The same wounds that were there for the us. It was the only thing that is going to be manmade in heaven.
Luke 24:32 ESV
32 They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?”
This ain’t heartburn. -Maybe you are feelng this right now. As you hear the scriptures. You know God is calling you home right now.
Luke 24:33 ESV
33 And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together,
They ran 7 miles back to Jerusalem! They must have been in shape.
Luke 24:34–35 ESV
34 saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.
CONCLUSION: Why would Jesus, take time on the most important day in histroy to find. He wanted those that walked away to believe. He wanted them back. (summery of the rest of ht story.)
