Luke 23:50–56 (ESV)
50 Now there was a man named Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man,
51 who had not consented to their decision and action; and he was looking for the kingdom of God.
52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
53 Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and laid him in a tomb cut in stone, where no one had ever yet been laid.
54 It was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was beginning.
55 The women who had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid.
56 Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared.
2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb,
3 but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
4 While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel.
5 And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?
6 He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee,
7 that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.”
8 And they remembered his words,
9 and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.
10 Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles,
11 but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.
12 But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.
Have you ever been discouraged? Have you ever been let down when something didn’t turn out the way you planned? Just imagine last night almost 2000 years ago. The disciples went to bed morning the loss of their leader and friend Jesus. Even though Jesus told them the plan they still did not understand. They were still stuck with their own assumptions about the Messiah. Just imagine how excited they must have been getting. Jesus was performing more and more miracles, He just raised Lazurith from the dead and more and more people started believing that Jesus was the Messiah. They were preparing for Jesus to over throw Rome.
Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.”
Despite Jesus telling them plainly the plan look at verse 7 of chapter 24
that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.”
We know they did get it by looking at Matthew 16
From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”
As we turn to our text, our first questions is what does the text tell us about God?
First, He keeps His promises doesn’t He
Second, He overcame death.
What does our passage say about man?
While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel.
With out divine guidance, we are doomed to miss the clear teaching of Jesus.
What hope does this passage give us?
Look at verse 50 and 51 of chapter 23
Now there was a man named Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man, who had not consented to their decision and action; and he was looking for the kingdom of God.
If we seek the kingdom, we will find it!
