When an athlete plays confident, they play different. In basketball there is a phrase called heat check, which is when a player has made a couple shots in a row, they then shoot normally a three pointer, also contested and not the best shot. But it is what happens multiple times. Confidence plays a factor in performance, most of you guys have a situation, whether sports or music where you have to perform. And you guys know that confidence can help.
Same way in our Christian life, our confidence in our salvation, helps us live the way God has called us to live. John in closing the epistle to these people just talked about knowing that they know that they know God. Which was big, because many doubts were there because of the false teachers. Now, he is writing about how that should play in our lives.
What should your life look like when you are confident in your salvation?
Answered Prayer
The word and in v. 14 connects it back to 13 in that when you have confidence in salvation, it should play into our prayer life
James 1 talks about asking in faith
Ask according to His will, God is not a magic genie who gives you what you ask for, but He gives you what you need.
Since we knows he hears us, it should give us confidence in how we pray,
in faith Expecting an answer,
God does not give bad gifts, even earthly fathers will not give horrible gifts such as a scorpion, if their child asks for an egg
Why are we more surprised in that God answers our prayers?
Many times we don’t pray because we are not persistent in it, as we do not expect God to answer it. Or we are not praying with a specific promise in mind, and it is outside of God’s will
Last week, after I preached Sunday night, we went out with the man who came to hear me preach. He said, multiple times “Get what you want, Im buying”, so Ms. Gabi and I could get what we want at Christos. Could I get what I want at Pizza Hut or McDonald’s on the same time. Or when my wife was sick asked if there were anything they could have gotten her. No! Many of us ask outside the will of God, and we get upset when He does not answer.
Righteous Living
Whosoever is born of God sinneth not, means keeps on sinning as the way the verb is, and the reason is that we have been born of God, and while we still have this fleshly nature, we have the Holy Spirit in us, and can live godly
Someone who is born of God and knows it, will not be comfortable with sin. They will want to please the Father.
We love Him, because He loved us first, and how do we show our love keep His commandments
Because of our love for one another my wife and I try to please the other
They are also kept, as it says by God, as it says “he that is begotten” referring to Jesus.
It also says that we will avoid idols, because when we know God’s love and who He is, everything fails in comparison. It is like a nice juicy steak, vs. dried frozen hamburger.
So if you are comfortable lying to your parents, and being rude, and cheating or gossipping, or telling bad jokes, it shows you don’t have a love for God, which should show that you do not know God’s love.
True Knowledge
We know that God has given to us the ability to understand the truth
Not only know that we are saved but know God more personally
Through the Holy Spirit, we can understand the truth, and be able to distinguish it from error
1 Corinthians 2:9-10 “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.”
Knowing that we are saved should cause us to know want to know God deeper, because not only did He die to keep us out of hell, but He died to allow us to have fellowship with Him.
How many of you ever been asked if you could eat dinner with one person, Some of you have certain people you would like to sit and have a meal with, you want to know them. Maybe they did something
Are you praying according to God’s will? Are you living in sin? Do you want to know God more? These are things that should accompany salvation.
