ADVICE DAD NEVER GAVE YOU

Ralph Sorter

My heart longs for the day I get the phone call, “Dad, you’re going to be a Grandpa.”  I have already planned all the baby furniture and toys I’m going to make them.  And I’ll let my boys and their wives know right up front I’m going to do my fair share of spoiling them.  Only the Lord knows how long it will be before they come along.  He holds the future.

But my heart goes out to our young parents.  When I think back, the world I brought my children into is far different than the world these little ones face.  We cannot always build the future for our children, but we can build our children for the future.

When Jaremy was born he had a defect with his heart and before his first birthday he had open-heart surgery.  His heart is fine now…both his physical heart and spiritual heart.  The doctors did the repair to his physical heart, but the Lord helped us develop his spiritual heart.  He’s strong-hearted and can face the future.  When his children come along he will have to prepare them to face the challenges that will come their way.

What kind of heart will your children need in order to face the future?  The heart of Paul – “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”  The heart of Joshua – “Be strong and courageous; do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go…as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."  The heart of Barnabas – “He rejoiced and began to encourage them all with resolute heart to remain true to the Lord.”  The heart of Ruth – “Where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God, my God.”

Are your children ready to face the future?  None of us see what their days may hold, but we can build in them a strong heart that knows the Lord…for when they have the Lord at their side…their future has a guaranteed presence of a Protector, a Friend, a Counselor, a Savior.  Build your child for the future.
