5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6 So, when he heard that Lazarus. was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.
Lazarus love was phileo
refers to the warmth and affinity shared by close friends, almost as if those friends were actual siblings.

Rely on Christ

2 Corinthians 12:9 (ESV)
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
Remember others
Olivia acl story
2 Corinthians 1:4 (ESV)
who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
Resistance training
Builds endurance
Romans 5:3-4 (ESV)
Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope,
Reminder
God is in control and he wants to use us in our trials and hardships
“This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” Tv
God’s work
John 11:7-16 (ESV)
7 Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.”8 The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” 9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”11 After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.” 12 The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” 13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. 14 Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, 15 and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” 16 So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”
We have Gods work to do it
John 17:4 (ESV)
I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.
Those against God will stumble
1 peter 2:7-8 (ESV)
So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,
“The stone that the builders rejected     has become the cornerstone,”[a]
8 and “A stone of stumbling,     and a rock of offense.”
They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.
We have an allotted time to do it
Psalm 139:16 (ESV)
16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them,     the days that were formed for me,     when as yet there was none of them.
Job 14:5 Matthew 6:27
God’s Way
John 11:20-53 (ESV)
20 So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.”23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.[d] Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”
Do you believe that?
Repent
John 11:20
She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”
Rejoice
Philippians 4:4 (ESV)
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.
Relax
John 10:28 (ESV)
28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.
God’s Compassion
John 11:28-29;33-37 (ESV)
28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.”29 And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him.  33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved[e] in his spirit and greatly troubled. 34 And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus wept. 36 So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?”
Jesus was deeply moved and greatly troubled and cried
Jesus was human
Isaiah 53:4 (ESV)
Surely he has borne our griefs     and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken,     smitten by God, and afflicted.
John Calvin wrote, “Christ has put on our feelings along with our flesh,”
Matthew 26:38 (ESV)
In the garden of gethsemane “soul is very sorrowful, even to death.”
Hebrews 5:7 .. he prayed with Loud cries and tears..
Jesus understand our pain
Jesus sees everyone morning around for the loss of their brother and friend. Jesus knows though that he will raise Lazarus.. he has already told his disciples this..
DA Carson says, “It is inexcusable to reduce this emotional upset to the effects of empathy, grief, pain or the like”
So why is Jesus so upset?
Jesus was broken over our sin
Parents.. we see our kids do something wrong..
Jesus being deeply moved here in the original language suggests anger, outrage.. like the snorting of a horse..
Jesus realizes the cost of sin.. he is staring at it face to face.. in his dear friend Lazarus..
This is what brings him to tears.
This is the beginning of Jesus truly contemplating his death because of the sin of those around him, because of us.. he weeps because he loves us enough to go through with it.
Gods Power reveals Gods Glory
John 11:39-44 (ESV)
39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.”40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.” 43 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” 44 The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
The glory of God
John piper put it this way basketball vs beauty. Definition
Isaiah 6:3 (ESV)
And one called to another and said:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!”
2 Corinthians 4:4 (ESV)
In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
Revival…
John 9:2-3 (ESV)
And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.
Gods will
John 11:45,53 (ESV)
45 Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him, 46 but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.  53 So from that day on they made plans to put him to death.
The event of raising Lazarus to death was the beginning of Easter.
Romans 8:28 (ESV)
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good,[a] for those who are called according to his purpose.
