Come and See

John 1:35–42 ESV
35 The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. 40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).
What does our passage reveal to us about God?
First, our passage shows the patience of God and I would add something that I think closely relates to the patience of God, I think we see the attention to detail and God patiently reveals Himself a little bit at a time.
Stop and think about it, by Genesis 3 Adam and Eve disobeyed. By Genesis chapter 4 God could have sent His son to redeem us but He didn’t. He slowly reveals more and more of Himself through thousands of years. I don’t know about you but I am no where near that patient.
But we see God choose Abram. And once again we see the patience of God.
Genesis 17:16–17 ESV
16 I will bless her, and moreover, I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall become nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.” 17 Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed and said to himself, “Shall a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?”
Even after choosing Abram, God waits till he is 100 and Sari is 90 to bless them with Isaac the promised heir.
Then God leads His people into Egypt for 400 hundred years of slavery preparing them to become His bride. Are you getting the sense that God is not in a hurry? He is just patiently revealing Himself to us.
Look at the life of Moses, he is young and strong and confident in himself primed to free God’s people, what does God do? He sends him into the dessert to herd sheep for 40 years until Moses is old and looses all confidence in himself then God calls him to leads His people.
Then God uses the 10 plagues on Egypt to show His power over all the fake gods.
Blood
Frogs
Gnats
Flies
Livestock
Boils
Hail
locusts
Darkness
Firstborn
Of course the last plague is where the feast of Passover was created. And then the Lord gave Moses the law on mount Sinai and Then over the next several thousand years, the tent of meeting was created and then the Temple and the second temple and a very detailed Levitical code with numerous types of sacrifices was created, but the main one that lasted for several thousand years and kept pointing to Jesus was the passover. That is why John the baptist calls Jesus the lamb of God.
We also see Jesus’ patience in this passage. Look at verse 38
John 1:38 ESV
38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?”
I love Jesus, What are you seeking?
This is a great question. For the first disciples and you this morning. What are you seeking this morning? Why are you here? We know Jesus is being patient here from the rest of this Gospel and the others don’t we. Because the disciples had no idea what the true Messiah was going to be.
What hope do you have from this passage?
