Introduction

Greetings…
v
Nathan was not just a prophet but a friend to David.
When we look at their relationship we find what true friendship is like.
A true friend like Nathan will…

Guard Our Future

David Wanted To Build.

King David wanted to build “a house of God.”
2 Samuel 7:1–2 ESV
1 Now when the king lived in his house and the Lord had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, 2 the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent.”
Nathan said “go and do all that your heart wants.”
2 Samuel 7:3 ESV
3 And Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.”
Sometimes we might not assess the situation properly at first as neither David nor Nathan did.
However, Nathan then discovered David would be in the wrong if he continued with his plan (2 Samuel 7:4-16).
Nathan could have “kept quite and let David fail” but he didn’t, “he guarded David’s future.
2 Samuel 7:17 ESV
17 In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David.

Summary

As Christians we don’t need those that flatter us but but rather friends who will guide our future to heaven not hell.
Proverbs 29:5 ESV
5 A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet.
We also find a true friend like Nathan will…

Guard Our Legacy

Adonijah Usurped The Throne.

We find Adonijah, Solomon’s brother, “usurping” King David in 1 Kings 1:5-10 and David did not even know it.
Yet, Nathan goes to Bathsheba and reminds David of his promise.
1 Kings 1:13 ESV
13 Go in at once to King David, and say to him, ‘Did you not, my lord the king, swear to your servant, saying, “Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne”? Why then is Adonijah king?’

Summary

Everyone needs that friend in their life that will help us keep our legacy of righteousness.
David didn’t know his legacy was in danger (1 Kings 1:11) but Nathan went to the one that had David’s ear and kept his legacy in tact.
Lastly, and most famously we remember a true friend like Nathan will…

Rebuke Our Sin

David’s Sin & Rebuke.

We all know the account of David’s most profound sins with Bathsheba and her husband Uriah (2 Samuel 11).
How David committed adultery with Bathsheba and killed her husband Uriah.
We also know Nathan did not shirk from rebuking David, even though he was king.
2 Samuel 12:7 ESV
7 Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul.

Summary

We all need a friend willing to rebuke our sin and bear our burden of repentance.

Conclusion

v
Invitation
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
