Introduction
In the Gospel, Jesus heals the man born blind on the Sabbath and tells his disciples that man was born blind not because anyone sinned but so that God’s works might be visible through him. Blindness, both physical and spiritual, is darkness, the inability to respond to light. But the light of God can penetrate all darkness and fill us with goodness and life.
Body
Jesus’ miracle caused controversy and division. The man’s neighbors were arguing if he was the same blind man they saw begging daily. The Pharisees didn’t believe that man was born blind and that Jesus had healed him, calling Jesus a sinner blaspheming God, and throwing the man out of the synagogue. The man and his parents should have settled the case. The man said yes, “I am,” the one who was blind, but now I can see, and his parents testified yes, this is our son that was born blind. It’s incredible how people keep arguing about obvious facts and never settle on the revealed truth.
But Jesus was not surprised by this; he says, “I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see might see, and those who do see might become blind.” Judgment, remaining in spiritual darkness, was Prophesied by Isaiah for the Pharisees who said they saw but refused to see the works of God in Christ. But for man, God’s goodness, faith, light, and salvation.
Conclusion.
We know that God does not judge our outward appearances but looks into our hearts. My brother and sister, allow me to say that we are all the man who once was blind, in the sense that we all have blind spots and dark places we may or may not be aware of and need the light of the Lord to find, expose and heal so that we can see the goodness of God’s work in our lives and the lives of our neighbors, and glorify God. Jesus recreated the eyes of the man with clay from his saliva and had him washed, baptized if you will, in the pool of Siloam, enlightened by the Holy Spirit and sent, so are we by the virtue of our baptisms, sent as children of light in this world to produce every kind of goodness, righteousness, and truth. Is there a tug for good in our hearts today? Yes, it’s Jesus who is speaking to us, by the Holy Spirit; listen to Him.
