Deuteronomy 28:1–10 NASB95
1 “Now it shall be, if you diligently obey the Lord your God, being careful to do all His commandments which I command you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. 2 “All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you obey the Lord your God: 3 “Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country. 4 “Blessed shall be the offspring of your body and the produce of your ground and the offspring of your beasts, the increase of your herd and the young of your flock. 5 “Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. 6 “Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out. 7 “The Lord shall cause your enemies who rise up against you to be defeated before you; they will come out against you one way and will flee before you seven ways. 8 “The Lord will command the blessing upon you in your barns and in all that you put your hand to, and He will bless you in the land which the Lord your God gives you. 9 “The Lord will establish you as a holy people to Himself, as He swore to you, if you keep the commandments of the Lord your God and walk in His ways. 10 “So all the peoples of the earth will see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they will be afraid of you.
Security
Not if, but when enemies rise
The blessing is how the Lord will respond to enemies
The Lord will fight our battles
They came unified and strong, but leave confused
How should this blessing impact our hearts?
Settle the fears, anxiety, and panic in our lives
Success
The best outcomes: what we have and what we do
Doesn’t mean we won’t have trials. But the outcome!!
Relational (family, neighborly, etc), industrious (occupation(s)), and exploratory (travel)
How should this blessing impact our hearts?
Prevent discouragement from failure
Prevent jealousy and competition
If everybody is blessed, why do we need to compete?
If the next person has more than me, that doesn’t take away my success!
Specialness
GOD will claim us as his own
Belonging to GOD is a unique status (Deut 7:6, 26:18; Titus 2:14)
This special status is a testimony to the world
Our obedience demonstrates our relationship with GOD
The world will react to God’s children how they should to GOD
How should this blessing impact our hearts?
Eliminate the thought that your life is worthless
Those without GOD have no hope!
Conclusion: These are abundant blessings that GOD brings, but not just on everybody, but on those who obey!! This is not salvation itself, but the abundant blessings which result from obedience. Salvation is a grand blessing resulting from Jesus’ obedience, gifted to us. But just as obedience was a necessary response in the first covenant, obedience is still necessary for this covenant in Jesus for which he bled and died for.
