Two Weeks Away From Two Services

Psalm 133 ESV
A Song of Ascents. Of David. 1 Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! 2 It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! 3 It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.
Ephesians 4:3 (ESV)
3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Today we are going to dive into the first part of Romans chapter 15. I am going to break this into two messages because as Paul begins to wrap up this amazing letter to the Church in Rome he lays out some careful instructions on how the Church Body should function. He does this in two parts. Part 1 He shows how the church should live in Unity. Part 2 He shows how the Church should work in ministry.
As members of the body of Christ we are called to be Contributors to the Success of work of God. This is very difficult in a world full of consumers. Paul begins to lay out in this section of Scripture this idea that it not about me.
Today we are going to discuss 7 attributes of a united church.
A United Church

1. Bears Each Other’s Burdens

Romans 15:1 (ESV)
1 We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves.
Galatians 6:2 (ESV)
2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
A United Church

2. Builds Each Other Up

Romans 15:2 (ESV)
2 Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.
Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)
29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

A United Church

3. Lives Like Jesus

Romans 15:2–3 (ESV)
2 Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.
3 For Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me.”
Jesus came not only to take away the Sins of the World. He came to show us how to please God.
John 4:34 ESV
34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.
John 5:30 ESV
30 “I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.
John 6:38 ESV
38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.
John 8:29 ESV
29 And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.”
John 14:31a (M:BCL)
31 But so the world might know how thoroughly I love the Father, I am carrying out my Father’s instructions right down to the last detail.
Jesus even showed us how to be about the father’s will even in difficult times.
Luke 22:42 ESV
42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”
A United Church

4. Lets The Word of God Be It’s Strength and Encouragement

Romans 15:4 (ESV)
4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
2 Timothy 3:16–17 ESV
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
When we look at scripture we need to understand that it never cancels it’s self out it only builds upon it’s self.
Romans 15:4 (ESV)
4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
When you feel weak Turn to Scripture
When you need encouragement: turn to Scripture
When you need Hope: Turn to Scripture

5. Is Full of Believes Allowing God to Mature and Develop Them.

Romans 15:5 ESV
5 May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus,
Romans 15:5 (M:BCL)
5 May our dependably steady and warmly personal God develop maturity in you so that you get along with each other as well as Jesus gets along with us all.
Romans 15:5 (M:BCL)
5 May our dependably steady and warmly personal God develop maturity in you so that you get along with each other as well as Jesus gets along with us all.
Romans 15:6 (M:BCL)
6 Then we’ll be a choir—not our voices only, but our very lives singing in harmony in a stunning anthem to the God and Father of our Master Jesus!
A United Church

6. Welcomes One Another

Romans 15:7 ESV
7 Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.
Romans 15:7 M:BCL
7 So reach out and welcome one another to God’s glory. Jesus did it; now you do it!

7. Serves One Another

Romans 15:8a (ESV)
8 For I tell you that Christ became a servant.....
Romans 15:8 ESV
8 For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God’s truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs,
Romans 15:9–12 ESV
9 and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, “Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles, and sing to your name.” 10 And again it is said, “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people.” 11 And again, “Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples extol him.” 12 And again Isaiah says, “The root of Jesse will come, even he who arises to rule the Gentiles; in him will the Gentiles hope.”
Romans 15:13 ESV
13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
Romans Live to Please Others / 15:1-13
