PREVIEWS of people’s lives

I. Fakery. v.46

46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
The intentions and execution of lips are not equal.
“Call”
The intentions and execution of lordship are not equal.
The double “Lord” shows the ostentatiousness of those whose religion is mostly outward. Such folk will often be more pronounced than others in a show of worship or piety, but their praise of God is empty, for it is only outward show. It has no substance in the heart.
The intentions and execution of love are not equal.
John 14:15 KJV
If ye love me, keep my commandments.

II. Faithfulness. v.47

47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:
These are attending church.
Hearing is not enough, you must also do. This illustration is related to the previous verse about calling Jesus nice names but not doing what He says. (John Butler)
These call themselves Christians.
These never follow Christ.

III. Failure. vs.48-49

There are only two ways to buil: the right way and all other ways.
A successful blueprint. V.48
48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.
Their foundation.
Those who build their lives upon what Christ said will survive the storms of life contrary to those who do not build their lives upon Christ.
In contrast those who do not have Christ have no foundation.
1 Corinthians 3:11 (KJV)
For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
The Sears Tower in Chicago had to go down over a thousand feet before the builders found rock upon which to construct one of the tallest buildings in the world.
We can’t expect a faithful foundation with no foundation work beforehand.
Isn't it odd “founded upon a rock” is omitted in the NIV, NASB, ESV, CSB.
Psalm 95:1 (KJV)
O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.
Psalm 94:22 (KJV)
But the LORD is my defence; and my God is the rock of my refuge.
Psalm 78:35 (KJV)
And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.
A sorry bankruptcy. V.49
49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
They can expect a storm.
They can expect a shift.
James 1:22 KJV
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
They can expect a stop.
Two things that set you up for failure:
Speed. Get it done quick! Shortcuts to success
Show. All outward show with nothing to stand on.
