Review:

In the Psalms we have the “anatomy of all parts of the soul.”
Divide section into heart (v.161-163), life (v.164-166), and motives (v.167-168)
Psalm 119:161–168 (KJV)
161 SCHIN. Princes have persecuted me without a cause: but my heart standeth in awe of thy word.
162 I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil.
163 I hate and abhor lying: but thy law do I love.
164 Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments.
165 Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them. (cause to stumble)
166 LORD, I have hoped for thy salvation, and done thy commandments.
167 My soul hath kept thy testimonies; and I love them exceedingly.
168 I have kept thy precepts and thy testimonies: for all my ways are before thee.

Heart captivated by God’s Word

Psalm 119:161-163 “161 SCHIN. Princes have persecuted me without a cause: but my heart standeth in awe of thy word. 162 I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil. 163 I hate and abhor lying: but thy law do I love.”

Unwavering gaze upon the wonder of God’s Word

Psalm 119:161 “161 SCHIN. Princes have persecuted me without a cause: but my heart standeth in awe of thy word.”

Standing in awe of God’s Word

Psalm 119:161 “161 SCHIN. Princes have persecuted me without a cause: but my heart standeth in awe of thy word.”
As a church we must maintain a high reverence for the Word of God. The inerrancy of Scripture is the foundational doctrine in which all other doctrines rest.

Godly fear has always marked the people of God.

We are also mindful of what happens when the fear of man overcomes our fear of God.

“I will go to the length of saying that unless we do have deep awe of the word we shall never have high joy over it. Our rejoicing will be measured by our reverencing.” (Spurgeon)

This awe of God will naturally extend to his Word

Psalm 119:162 “162 I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil.”

We now treasure His Word

Psalm 119:162 “162 I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil.”
How many of you grew up with great dreams of finding the treasure map? David was not stranger to spoils.

The gift received through study

These are not in conflict.
2 Timothy 2:77 Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.”
2 Timothy 2:15 “15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
The careless reader sees an unintended “glory” that is not there.

We will never be the same

Psalm 119:163 “163 I hate and abhor lying: but thy law do I love.”
We can neither “stand in awe of God’s word,” nor “rejoice at it,” unless we hate all contrary ways.
Kids label too many things a lie. Many adults don’t label anything a lie.
Ended with saying we should decimate the Word but meant disseminate
Transition: The Psalmist had just spoken of his fear, joy, hatred and love. He now expresses his love in praise.

Life given to Praise

Psalm 119:164-166 “164 Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments. 165 Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them. 166 LORD, I have hoped for thy salvation, and done thy commandments.”

The Lord’s righteous judgments in his word are a constant matter for praise.

“Do we praise God seven times a day? Do we praise him once in seven days?” (Spurgeon)
Man recently told me about a time in his life he lived in constant prayer and how one prayer led to another. He mentioned to me how easy it was when you are grateful and impossible if you are not.

Joy and Honor

Not only do we get to experience the joy God in worship, but it was absolutely essential if I was truly to honor him.
Praise not merely expresses but completes the enjoyment
Teenager asking why it was “okay that God wants so much for Himself” Not the first or the less to wrestle with that question. We may think we want a man-centered God.
One man referred to it as a “perpetual eulogy”

God does not take and deplete us in worship, but gives life.

Psalm 50:12 “12 If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.”

Why do you worship a God who needs nothing?

Do not think of it as a compliment but the overflow of a heart of joy.
All enjoyment spontaneously overflows into praise.
Ever seen anything that caused you to rejoice. Maybe a wedding. Sporting event. You become overwhelmed with emotion as the reality of the moment or truth sinks into your heart.
God desires our greatest good.
God is truly to love us, he must give us himself.
God’s desire to call me worship is the most loving thing he could possibly do for me
My proper response in worship is the the most glorying thing I can do for Him!
We must find time for prayer, singing unto the Lord, but we should not overlook the role of sharing testimonies one to another.
The services we have together should only be a reflection of what life looks like for us sharing life together throughout the week.
“I will not preach too many until I have preached Christ to one.” - Wayne Cofield

A Thankful People

Col 1:10-12 “10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; 12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:”
Colossians focuses on warnings from receiving false teachings.
Gratitude is a guard on defense.
Paul repeats this refrain through the book. Col 3:15-17 “15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”
We even see that a thankful people, will be a people who admonish one another in the word, a singing people, a people living out the truth of the Word in deed.
Thankfulness, like prayer, is a spiritual discipline — it requires effort and intentionality

Thank God for the peace

Psalm 119:165 “165 Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.”
The happiness of a child of God summed up in one word—peace.
Active devotedness flows from assured acceptance. Where there is no certainty, there can be little love, little delight, little diligence. Bridges

Thank God for hope

Psalm 119:166 “166 LORD, I have hoped for thy salvation, and done thy commandments.”
Hope is a confident waiting.
Our hope produces obedience

Want to keep a command, simply love it. The rest will certainly follow.

Psalm 119:167 “167 My soul hath kept thy testimonies; and I love them exceedingly.”
The Christian does not acknowledge the popular separation of duty and privilege
If it is his duty it is no less his privilege, to love the precepts. Nothing holds him to them—nothing enables him thoroughly to keep them, but love
Transition: What motivates him to obedience?  Not a slavish fear but love.

Motivated by Love

Psalm 119:167-168 “167 My soul hath kept thy testimonies; and I love them exceedingly. 168 I have kept thy precepts and thy testimonies: for all my ways are before thee.”

Audience of One

Psalm 119:168 “168 I have kept thy precepts and thy testimonies: for all my ways are before thee.”
precepts (the step-by-step instructions and procedures)
His testimonies (God’s first-hand account of who He is, what He’s done, and what He will do)
Story of college football player playing for an Audience of One

Love for God yields a love for the Word

Psalm 119:167 “167 My soul hath kept thy testimonies; and I love them exceedingly.
It’s a beautiful description of the way it ought to be for us.
Obedience to the Word is a testimony to the world and to our God that we believe Him.
We should love them exceedingly.
Could you imagine what David would have thought about sitting down and reading Luke 21-23.
Transition: Note the reverence for God Himself, not for Scripture in isolation.

Conclusion

Let me encourage you to pray to see the wonder.

Pray that God will help you understand what you are reading.
Pray God brings into your remembrance the truths of other passages that will help you understand what you are reading.
Worship is not going to be real or acceptable in our church if we aren’t seeing wonder in the Word.
Until Jesus comes back 1 Cor 13:12 “12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.”
