Jesus Warns Against Wrong Teaching.

Things
Introduction:
Read Matthew 16:6-12. pp.
250 events. Harmony of the Gospels.
Jesus had been traveling out of Galilee up to Tyre and Sidon. He came back down to Decapolis where He healed a deaf man with a speech impediment.
In the begging of chapter 8, He fed fed 4000 people with only 7 loaves of bread. Then he was once again challenged by the religious leaders to give a sign to prove that He was the Messiah. Which Jesus refused. In the parallel account in Matthew 16:4. Jesus said except the sign of the Prophet Jonah. (which was given at the resurrection and they still did not believe). They were spiritually blinded. In verse 13, Jesus gets into a boat and departs.
This event is set up by explaining that the disciples had gotten into the boat and had not taken any bread.
Mark 8:14 KJV
14 Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf.
They had still not seen that Jesus could supply their needs. They were focussing on earthly things when they should have been focusing on Spiritual things.
Mark 8:15 KJV
15 And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.
Matthew 16:6 KJV
6 Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
Matthew adds Sadducees to the Pharisees and Herodians.
Jesus had just had another bad encounter with the religious leaders. he wanted them to believe but they had hardened their hearts. They were not going to believe no matter what Jesus did.
We have to make sure that we do not harden our hearts against God.
Jesus speaks of leaven of the Pharisees and of Herod.
What is this leaven that Jesus speaks of?
Matthew 16:12 KJV
12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
Luke 12:1 KJV
1 In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
The Sermon on the Mount.
Jesus calls the religious leaders hypocrites at various times in the Scriptures.
We know that leaven (yeast) is put into bread to make it rise and to make it taste good. it only takes a very small amount of yeast to make a loaf of bread rise. That tiny amount of yeast permeates the whole loaf.
J. Vernon McGee:

is the process of making something taste good to the natural man. Actually, what is liberalism? It all came into existence by the pulpit trying to please the unsaved church members. And today we have a lot of men trying to please the congregation, even when they are unsaved. And that, may I say, is putting leaven in—that is, mixing wrong teaching with the truth of the gospel. The only kind of bread they will eat is that which has leaven because leaven makes bread taste good. I was brought up on hot biscuits, friend, and the natural man likes them. Leaven is the evil that is put in. And here He is warning them about the wrong teaching of the Pharisees and Herod.

Evil carbs. Temporary pleasures.
Other places warning about sin and false teaching creeping in
1 Corinthians 5:1–8 KJV
1 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife. 2 And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you. 3 For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed, 4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, 5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? 7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: 8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Acts 15:24 KJV
24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:
2 Corinthians 11:3–4 KJV
3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.
Galatians 1:6–7 KJV
6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
Galatians 5:9 KJV
9 A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.
Colossians 2:8 KJV
8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
Matthew 15:8–9 KJV
8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. 9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
2 Peter 2:1 KJV
1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
2 Peter 3:17 KJV
17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
Titus 1:10–11 KJV
10 For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: 11 Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.
1 Timothy 4:1 KJV
1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
Mark 8:16 KJV
16 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread.
Mark 8:17 KJV
17 And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened?
Mark 8:18 KJV
18 Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember?
Mark 8:19 KJV
19 When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve.
Mark 8:20 KJV
20 And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven.
Mark 8:21 KJV
21 And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand?
Our life in this world is a spiritual warfare, whether we want it or not; it is inevitably so, because of Satan.
You see that clearly in the life of the Son of God Himself, how constantly He was attacked and besieged by Satan. Satan only left Him for a season after the temptation in the wilderness; then he came back. Because Satan is the god of this world and governs and orders it. The whole life of the Christian is, of necessity, one of spiritual conflict.

Application:
How do we protect ourselves from false teaching?
Matthew 10:16 KJV
16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
James 1:5 KJV
5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
1 John 4:1–3 KJV
1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
Proverbs 4:23 KJV
23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
We have to focus on the Spiritual and not on the physical.
Be consistent time in God’s Word.
Be consistent time in prayer.
Listen to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Christian, let me ask you:
Have you allowed the leaven of this world to creep into to your life?
What about the leaven of pride, envy, greed,.
Are you looking for something that tastes good or are you looking for something that will nourish your soul?
Lost person, do you only care about the hear and the now or do you consider eternity in Hell.
The false teaching of the world tells you you can do whatever you want without consequence. But the Bible tells us the wages of sin is death and that is eternity in hell.
You do not have to go to hell!
Trust that Jesus died on the cross, was buried and rose again according to the Scriptures for your sins and have the peace of knowing that you will not have to go to hell.
