In Galilee Philip is called to follow Jesus

Philip gets Nathanael after Jesus calls Him to follow , John 1:45
Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
Nathanael questions if anything good could come from Nazareth, John 1:46
And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”
Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
Nazareth is not a well known city to Jewish scholars and prophets
Most information today is subjective
Jesus coming from Nazareth was prophesied by the prophets, Matthew 2:23
And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, “He shall be called a Nazarene.”
The city itself is not mentioned in the Old Testament
Likely a reference to Jesus being referred to as a branch of Jesse, Isaiah 11:1

There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse,
And a Branch (נֵ֫צֶר) shall grow out of his roots.
He will be a branch of righteousness , Jeremiah 23:5
“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord,
“That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness;
A King shall reign and prosper,
And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.
Specifically referred to as the Branch, Zechariah 3:8
‘Hear, O Joshua, the high priest,
You and your companions who sit before you,
For they are a wondrous sign;
For behold, I am bringing forth My Servant the BRANCH.
Nathanael's comment does not indicate Nazareth was despised
He questions if anything good - beneficial - can come from Nazareth
His comment is in the context o the Messiah coming from Nazareth
Nazareth is not mentioned in the Old Testament as the city Christ would come from
The Messiah would be Born in Bethlehem, Micah 5:2
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
Though you are little among the thousands of Judah,
Yet out of you shall come forth to Me
The One to be Ruler in Israel,
Whose goings forth are from of old,
From everlasting.”
The Messiah will reign in Jerusalem on David’s Throne, Jeremiah 23:5
“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord,
“That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness;
A King shall reign and prosper,
And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.
He will come from the land of Galilee, Isaiah 9:1-2
Nevertheless the gloom will not be upon her who is distressed,
As when at first He lightly esteemed
The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
And afterward more heavily oppressed her,
By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,
In Galilee of the Gentiles.
The people who walked in darkness
Have seen a great light;
Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death,
Upon them a light has shined.
It Does Make Sense from the Prophets that As the Branch He would come from the City called branch (in Hebrew) out from Galilee, the home town of His earthy parents, Luke 2:4
Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David,
Philip’s Response to Nathanael was for come see for himself, John 1:46

And Nathanael said to him, “Is it possible out from Nazareth to be something good?” Philip said to him, “Come and look with discernment.”
Seeing Nathanael Approach, Jesus Speaks Concerning Him, John 1:47

Jesus discerned Nathanael coming towards Him and said concerning him, “Behold, truly an Israelite in whom deceit is not.”
A compliment, Psalm 32:2

Blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute perversity,
And there is no deceit in his spirit.
The High Priests, Scribes, and Elders could not claim this characteristic, Matthew 26:3-4

Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people assembled at the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, and plotted to take Jesus by trickery (δόλῳ) and kill Him.
Jesus Had Seen Nathanael Under the Fig Tree Before Philip Summoned Him, John 1:48

Nathanael said to Him, “Where from do you know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip summoned you, being under the fig tree, I discerned you.”
Seeing him with discernment
This type of seeing does not require looking at
Nathanael Believes Jesus is the Son of God, John 1:49

Nathanael answered Him “Rabbi, you are the Son of God, You are King of Israel.”
Nathanael is told he will see greater things than these, John 1:50
Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”
The greater things
The Messiah came from Nazareth
Jesus is the Son of God
Jesus is the King of Israel
Nathanael will discern the heaven opening, John 1:51
And He said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”
Understand the connection between the third heaven and earth
Through a few words from the Messiah, Nathanael believed

A Wedding in Galilee, John 2:1
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.
Jesus and His disciples are at the wedding by invitation, John 2:2
Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.
Mary asks Jesus to get more wine, John 2:3-4
And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”
Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.”
The servants are instructed to do whatever Jesus requests, John 2:5
His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
Six pots of water turned to wine, John 2:6-7
Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim.
The water is drawn out and taken to the master of the feast, John 2:8
And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it.
The master of the feast compliments the bridegroom on the quality of the wine, John 2:9-10
When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!”
This sign was done for the disciples, John 2:11
This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.
Mary was not privy to what Jesus was about to do
Mary likely did not understand Jesus’ comment concerning His hour
Only the servants of the household knew where the new wine came from
The sign was for the disciples benefit
