CHARACTERISTICS of charlatans.

I. They Are Dense. vs.39-40

Their description. v.39a
39 And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind?...
Their destination. v.39b
...shall they not both fall into the ditch?
Their disciples. v.40
40 The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.

II. They Are Deceitful. vs.41-42

No Bible study, just social study. v.41
41 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
They claim to be fixers, but only fuss. v.42a
42 Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye?...
Their real problem is hypocrisy. v.42b
...Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye.
“They…could not lift their disciples into a victorious living of which they themselves were ignorant.” (John Phillips: Exploring Luke)

III. They Are Double-dealing. vs.43-45

You can only reproduce what you are. v.43
43 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
You are known by your actions, not your words. v.44
44 For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.
It is what is on the inside that counts. v.45
45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
1 Samuel 16:7 KJV
7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
