The Word will take effect

Faith comes by the word (Rom10:17) and Paul is using the word to bring faith, the right faith to the Jewish brethren.
Think back, or look back (9:1-5) what gifts has God given to Israel?
Previously Paul has given, reminded his Brethren:
Given gift of the Law
Given Gift of Service to God
Given the covenants
Given the promises
Given the prophets
As Paul has discussed the gifts given to Israel. He is going on this morning to talk about the grace of God given to Israel. For not all Israel has rejected Jesus.
So, here is our starting point (Rom9:6):
Romans 9:6 NASB95
6 But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For they are not all Israel who are descended from Israel;
So, now let’s lean into the word this morning.
The children of promise (9:6-8)
The word of promise (9:9-10)
The purpose of promise (9:11-12)
The proclamation of God (9:13-16)
Of course we start with the passage first.
Romans 9:6 NASB95
6 But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For they are not all Israel who are descended from Israel;
Romans 9:7 NASB95
7 nor are they all children because they are Abraham’s descendants, but: “through Isaac your descendants will be named.”
Romans 9:8 NASB95
8 That is, it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise are regarded as descendants.
Romans 9:9 NASB95
9 For this is the word of promise: “At this time I will come, and Sarah shall have a son.”
Romans 9:10 NASB95
10 And not only this, but there was Rebekah also, when she had conceived twins by one man, our father Isaac;
Romans 9:11 NASB95
11 for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that God’s purpose according to His choice would stand, not because of works but because of Him who calls,
Romans 9:12–13 NASB95
12 it was said to her, “The older will serve the younger.” 13 Just as it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”
Romans 9:14 NASB95
14 What shall we say then? There is no injustice with God, is there? May it never be!
Romans 9:15 NASB95
15 For He says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”
Romans 9:16 NASB95
16 So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy.
Romans 9:17 NASB95
17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I raised you up, to demonstrate My power in you, and that My name might be proclaimed throughout the whole earth.”
Romans 8:18 NASB95
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
Who is Paul talking to in this passage?
What is the emphasis of this passage (hint, look at 6, 7, 8)?
Has the word of God failed (v.6)?
Are all descendants children of God (v.7)?
Who are the children of God (v.8)?
What is the word of promise (v.9)? then look at (v.10)
Why does the purpose of God stand (v.11)?
What does God say about Jacob and Esau (v.13)?
What did God tell Moses (v.15)?
What does God’s mercy (v.15) depend on (v.16)?
Who did God raise up (v.17)?
Who did God give mercy to, and who did he harden (v.18)?
I know lot’s of questions, but this is a bible study and we are getting into God’s word, so questions are in order.

Children of Promise

Just because you say it does not make it true. That is basically Paul’s statement.
Paul illustrates his claim by using Abraham (v.7)
Romans 9:7 HCSB
7 Neither are they all children because they are Abraham’s descendants. On the contrary, your offspring will be traced through Isaac.
Abraham had two sons, Ishmael (Gen16:16) and Jacob (Gen21:3) - Isaac was the son of promise.
Abraham and Sarah tried to help God, but God said Isaac was the seed, did not even mention Ishmael.
Have there been time that you tried to help God out? Does God need our help, or our participation?
You can see Paul talks of Children of flesh and children of promise (v.8)
Romans 9:8 NKJV
8 That is, those who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted as the seed.
As mentioned before God does not even acknowledge Ishmael as son to Abraham (here is a free scripture non on your outline (Gen22:2)
Genesis 22:2 NASB95
2 He said, “Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.”
The name Israel means “governed by God” so you cannot be Israel unless you are governed by God.
Today some may think, Did God’s word fail (i.e v.6); God still reaches the children of promise (v.8)
Smith says “Paul tells us that no one is truly Israel unless he is governed by God. We have a parallel situation with the word ‘Christian’. Not everyone who is called a Christian is truly a follower of Christ.”

Word of promise

Remember that faith comes by hearing, well Paul goes on to talk about the word brings promise and continues with illustration.
God uses Sarah now vs. Abraham to show the word of promise (v.9)
Romans 9:9 GNB
9 For God’s promise was made in these words: “At the right time I will come back, and Sarah will have a son.”
God uses Rebekah too (v.10-12).
Twins, one the son of promise the other not (v.11)
The older would serve the younger (v.12)
God sovereignly chose Isaac and ignored Ismael, he did the same with Jacob and Esau.
Paul is trying to stress to his brethren- you are good, don’t you know how good you are? With all the blessings, with being descendants of Abraham, you can be children of promise through the word when you know it comes through Isaac and Jacob. All because of God’s sovereignty.”
Have you ever missed God’s blessings?
Have you struggled with how good God is?

Proclamation of God

What does the word proclamation mean?
What would be an example of something you have proclaimed?
Do we as Christians have a proclamation we do often?
If God is making a proclamation, it is something we should lean in and take note of.
God’s first proclamation (v.13)
Romans 9:13 NLT
13 In the words of the Scriptures, “I loved Jacob, but I rejected Esau.”
Other versions say “hated” but does hate mean hate as we think of hate? Or does it mean rejected, or loved less, or note the chosen one?
God’s second proclamation (v.15)
Romans 9:15 NLT
15 For God said to Moses, “I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose.”
You can see in this verse some important facts
God chooses
God shows mercy and compassion.
God’s third proclamation (v.17)
Romans 9:17 NKJV
17 For the Scripture says to the Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be declared in all the earth.”
Hum, who did God raise up and why (v.17)?
Paul’s proclamations to take note of too (v.14, 16, 18)
You may take a few minutes and see what the proclamations are.
Someone read (v.14) what is the proclamation?
Someone read (v.16) what is the proclamation?
Someone read (v.18) what is the proclamation?
Backing up some to (v.13) some may wonder how can a loving, gracious, merciful God choose to love one and hate another?
How, because God is sovereign. We should think, why did God love Jacob, and that He loves us who were sinners and connivers just like Jacob.
Esau was carnally minded (Gen25:30); so did God choose correctly? Yes.
Genesis 25:30 NKJV
30 And Esau said to Jacob, “Please feed me with that same red stew, for I am weary.” Therefore his name was called Edom.
Look again at (v.15) if you wonder when God said this. it goes back to when Moses returned with the tablets and found the people dancing around the golden calf. Moses prayed and God answered
Exodus 33:19 NKJV
19 Then He said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.”
We cannot run, earn, work, buy, or win our salvation, the mercy and grace of God. It is because of the sovereign pardon of God on our behalf that we have it and don’t end up like Pharoah and his people.
God allowed Pharoah to rise up in power, just so God could show His strength and power in His judgment against Pharoah and thereby glorify Himself. This also shows to Israel the grace, mercy and compassion of the sovereign God.
Did God choose right now? He chose you and you answered the call. He does not force us, he invites us. God did not harden a great gentle loving heart in Pharoah, but allowed an already hardened heart to be used for His purpose and glory.
Has God’s word called you? Has God’s word pierced your heart? Has God’s word proven true? Has God’s word fallen short? So, what are you doing today with God’s word that does not fail?
