Hoping that possibly the same thing that happened to John the baptist would happen to Jesus by making him an enemy of Herod by calling out the wickedness of divorce.
The worst case scenario would be making one of the two sects of jewish leaders upset with Jesus for his teaching as they were split on the meaning of Deuteronomy 24.
The great truth we find in this passage is that all our doctrines and beliefs must come from the Word of God
Even Jesus looked to the Bible as his source of truth
Jesus coming did not change who God is and what God desires of men
Jesus is God in the flesh and stands in full agreement of the writings of the Old Testament (Matthew 5:17-28)
However, we will see in this passage that Jesus doesn’t use the law as the pharisees do but he seeks the heart of God in the matter
The Pharisees ask only half of the question “lawful for all circumstances or for adultery”

Moses and Marriage

Even the pharisees admitted that Moses suffered divorce
They do not get into why he suffered it but they understood that this was not by design
Jesus reminds them of the hardness of the hearts of the Israelites
They were a group of people that had their hearts set on following after the world

Creation and Marriage

God created us in a unique way for the purpose of marriage
This mystery is revealed to us in Ephesians
Ephesians 5:22-33 Love as yourself
You would not put yourself away
Savior of the body- protecting your wife is the very opposite of putting her away
This is needed because your spouse has weaknesses and problems
One who is perfect does not need a savior
This is how Christ deals with us
God created us to be one with our wife and separate from our parents
This is before the fall plan of God
Genesis 2:24 God’s plan was for a husband and wife to work together to make eachother what God has called us to be
A big mistake men make is we want our wife to serve us or our family, but their job is to help us serve God
We as well are to help our wife in serving God with their life
God has joined us together for this purpose
neither one of us are perfect but we are united in our mission of serving God
God is at work in our marriage if we remain committed to our purpose in marriage

Jesus and Marriage

Jesus stands by the purpose of God in marriage
One man, one woman, one lifetime
There is no reason in the mind of Jesus for two people to separate from marriage
Jesus’ concern is for the offense toward the spouse
God’s intention in marriage is for us to serve eachother in order to serve God
By putting your spouse away and looking for another you have committed offense against them and hindered them from serving God to the best of their ability
This Momentary Marriage: A Parable of Permanence (Life Hangs on Protection and Provision)
So when you think it through, virtually everything a husband is called upon to do in his leadership is summed up in one of these four ways: 1) physical provision (like food and shelter), 2) spiritual provision (like the word of God and spiritual guidance, instruction, and encouragement), 3) physical protection (as from intruders or natural disasters or disease), and 4) spiritual protection (like prayer and warnings and keeping certain influences out of the home). Provision: physical and spiritual. Protection: physical and spiritual.
