Colossians 3:1–17 ESV
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all. Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
If then you have been raised
We have to remember that these things apply to Christians.
All people are engaged in them, but they are only

The New Self is Focused on Things Above

IF you have been raised with Christ.
This IF is essential.
We have to remember that these things apply to Christians.
All people are engaged in them, but effort cannot save you. This is not talking about what you must do to be saved, but rather if you are saved this is what you should be doing.
Seek the things that are above, where Christ i seated, at the right hand of God.
Set you minds on things that are above.
Not on things that are on earth.
The lie of multitasking, we just switch from one thing to another quickly. We cannot be focused on God and things above and earthly things. It is one or the other.
Lot’s Wife
Application:
This is a calling to place your focus on eternal things, rather than temporary things.
We all prioritize in our lives. We have all had priority shifts in our life.
When we come to Christ, we get a major priority shift. The things of this world should become less of a focus.
The way that our eyes work in light and in darkness.
Let all my worries fade And fall to the ground I'm gonna seek Your face And not look around Till the place I'm in Grows strangely, strangely, strangely dim

The New Self Puts Off Sinful Living

llustration: Weight Plates
The Protective coating chipped off.
Rust is corrosive.
The rust and dirt gets on your hands, and everything else.
If nothing changes, they will continue to corrode.
Must be cleaned - Vinegar, vicious scrubbing, towel.
Put to death (make war) therefore what is earthly in you:
sexual immorality
God’s standard, one man one woman in marriage.
impurity
Living lifestyles that are impure.
passion
Pursuing fleshly desires.
evil desire
Entertaining desires that are evil.
covetousness, which is idolatry
yearning for that which you do not have.
anger
being filled with anger for your fellow man.
wrath
Being a person that acts upon their anger.
malice
Even thoughts and intentions (malicious intent)
“I’ll Pray for You” Song
I haven't been to church Since I don't remember when Things were going great 'til they fell apart again So I listened to the preacher as he told me what to do He said you can't go hatin' others Who have done wrong to you Sometimes we get angry, but we must not condemn Let the good Lord do his job, you just pray for them
I pray your brakes go out runnin' down a hill I pray a flower pot falls from a window sill And knocks you in the head like I'd like to
I pray your birthday comes and nobody calls I pray you're flyin' high when your engine stalls I pray all your dreams never come true Just know wherever you are, honey, I pray for you
slander
Spreading lies about someone to hurt them.
obscene talk from your mouth
Anything filthy that comes from our mouths
lying
God is truth, and we should be truthful with one another.
Why?
Because on account of these things the wrath of God is coming.
You once walked in them.
But now you must put them all away.
Reemphasize: weight plates
Rust is corrosive

The New Self Puts On Righteousness

llustration: Weight Plates
To keep the rust and corrosion from coming back, something has to be done.
Primed with a rust converter.
Painted with a nice matte black paint.
Even detailed the numbers.
Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved:
compassionate hearts
We should care for what God cares about.
kindness
We should be kind to everyone that we meet.
humility
We shouldn’t think more highly of ourselves than we ought to.
meekness
Gentleness. This is not weakness, but the ability to control oneself to be gentle when appropriate. Jesus was meek, not weak. It is submissive to the father.
patience
We must be patient.
bearing with one another
We must bear with one another through difficulty. (when I first started painting, how slow I was at cutting in.)
forgiving with one another, as we have been forgiven, you must also forgive
Christians cannot be unforgiving people. That is worldly.
Put on love
This is what will protect and guide us into these things.
Let peace rule in your hearts
When we are focused on things above, and when we are focused on following God, the things of this world will not rock us like they did before. We have an unshakable peace.
Be Thankful
Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly
teaching and admonishing one another with all wisdom
This is what God says & This is what you should do.
singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs
Our lives should be outpouring praises to our God for what he has done.
with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
We do all of this because we are thankful.
And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Every item in your day should be able to be done in the name of Jesus. Everything you say should be able to be said in the name of Jesus. If not, it is sinful.
Reemphasize weight plates:
They took a long time.
I made mistakes along the way.
They still don’t look perfect, there are still imperfections if you look closely, but they are covered by the protective layers.
They will take maintenance to keep them nice over time. They will chip, but they can be covered.
But they are miles from where they were before and that is clear to see.
We should be the same:
This process will take time.
We will make mistakes along the way.
We will not achieve perfection in this life, our scars will be evident, but we are covered by the blood of Jesus.
When we make mistakes we must run back to the Father for further transformation.
But if we are faithful, we will put to death the things of the flesh, and put on the things of God. When we do this, it should be evident to the world around us. In doing so we glorify God in the world.
