Psalm 8:4 ESV
what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?
What is Man? Why is Man valuable?
I ask you today, why are you here? At church? No. Why are you on Earth? Why were you created? Why did God allow you to exist? Why are you so valuable to the king?
Have you ever thought about this? What was I created? Now you see this seems on the service like a superficial thought, but no it is critical that we understand why we are created. Why are we here. What did God want us to do?
This question is more vital than we realize, because if you do not know why you are created then you are far more likely to be taken advantage of.
But if you have a sure understanding of who you are, then you are far less likely to be abused.
So lets begin by asking, what is man fundamentally?
Man is Man according to the dictionary. I dove deeper into the dictionaries definition and it devolved down essentially into you are a man if you want to be.
Well If you are having an existential crisis, then that definition is useless, because if man defines himself who cares?
I think this. That’s great, but what if you think something different tomorrow? does who you are change? the answer is obviously yes. It does.
so what if I change how I define myself every day?
then I am like a ship tossed about by the sea. there is nothing to anchor you to reality. If you are not anchored to really then life is nearly unlivable.
So it would seem fairly important to be grounded in who you are. not who you think you are, or who you want to be, but rather who God made you to be.
Once we lay hold of this, our lives can begin to take shape.

What is Man?

See even the psalmist David. the king himself looked up at the heavens and cried:
Psalm 8:1–3 ESV
O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger. When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
Last week we examined Gods infinite wonder and glory. Who is God? What is god?
How great is our God. How wonderful is the Lord. He is Holy and perfect and mighty and glorious and loving and faithful, and everything we are not.
Then David asked the the next logical question. If you are that wonderful, why do you even bother with us? Sure, the Christian answer is Gods love. that isn’t wrong, but that isn’t the whole story either.
Psalm 8:4 ESV
what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?
What is man that you are mindful of him? Why do you care so much about us?
So we ask, What is man?
Genesis 1:26 (ESV)
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.
Let Us make man in Our Image. In Our likeness
Our Image: Imagio Dei: the Image of God
So what God did when He made humans is that He set them apart from the animals in that humans would have a spark of divinity within them. they would possess a Spirit and a soul, whereas it is believed that animals only possess a body and soul.
Therefore humans would be created unlike animals with the ability to live forever, once created. WE were not designed to die.
We were made in Gods image with 3 parts like God. You man is a triune being, like God.
He is spirit, He is soul, and he is body
a human is made up of these three interwoven parts, where does one end and the other start its hard to tell. obviously you can see the body, but the soul and spirit are held within the body. where in the body? the brain the heart? idk?

Why is Man?

Why would God create humans? why would He make you?
If God doesn’t need us, which He clearly doesn’t. He doesn’t need more servants. He has everything. He doesn’t need more of anything. Much less stuff from us. Isaiah said our best effort is as filthy rags before a Holy God.
Isaiah 64:6 KJV 1900
But we are all as an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; And we all do fade as a leaf; And our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
So why even bother with us?
Colossians 1:16 ESV
For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
We were made for Gods pleasure. Now I am not talking Gods entertainment, but rather Gods enjoyment. You see God is, as we discussed last week, highly personal, and highly creative. So for this creative personal God,, He wanted being that He could get to know and that could get to know Him. This intimacy brings God much joy. this is why we were created, because He saw how much joy he would have if He created humans.
John 17:3 ESV
And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
So you and I were made to know and worship God. That is your purpose. that is why you were built.
Things go crazy when we worship other gods. Because other gods, by their very nature are lesser gods, lesser gods cannot satisfy the great need deep within your spirit for the Father

Who is Man?

Man was created for relationship, first with God, then with each other.
It’s interesting God creates Adam, with a need that God doesn’t fill. God puts Adam in the garden, the states in Gen
Genesis 2:18 ESV
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
Man wasn’t Alone, God was there, but God made Adam in a way, incomplete. Adam would need another to bridge the gap. Adam was lacking, so God made Eve.
What that teaches us is that man was born to know God. that is the purpose of life. To know the one true God. Once that is established however there is still a hole, that unless God calls you to celibacy, you will fill with a wife or a husband.
Breaking this down even further:
Humans need God first, Each other second.

You Were Made For More

I ask you this morning, do you understand why you are here? If you miss this, it can really mess up life. You are not here to play video games. that is not the sum total of life. Culture would tell you the greatest thing you will do in life is your career. that isn’t true either. If that is the pinnacle, we have missed it. If you are living for our family, that too will leave you hollow, because you were not created to be an employee, a consumer, or even a parent. if you achieve those things, great, praise the Lord, but hear me that is not the sum total of Life. You and I were made for soooo much more.
John 17:3 ESV
And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
