The Word

John 1:1–5 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
What does our passage say about God?
First it identifies Jesus as eternal.
John 1:1 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14–17 (ESV)
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
(John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’ ”)
For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
John 17:5 ESV
And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.
Colossians 1:15–20 (ESV)
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.
For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,
and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
Jahovah Witnesses use this verse to defend their lie that Jesus was created. But we know that you can’t interpret scripture apart from the whole of the rest of scripture. We just finished looking at the first couple verses of John chapter one that clearly states the Jesus existed before God began creating. So how could Jesus be God’s first creation, HE CAN’T and He is not. SO how do we explain verse 15? Let’s look at Psalm 89:27 where God is speaking about king David. God says about David, that He will make David
Psalm 89:27 (ESV)
And I will make him the firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.
We know David is the youngest of Jesse’s eight sons. So is God saying that He is going to change David’s birth order? No of course not, God is using the phrase I will make him the firstborn to speak to David’s importance not birth order. How deos that change our reading of verse 15 of Colossians?
Colossians 1:15 ESV
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
Paul is saying that Jesus is more important that all creation.
What else does our passage say about Jesus?
John 1:3 ESV
All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Jesus was an active part of creation.
Psalm 148:5 (ESV)
Let them praise the name of the Lord! For he commanded and they were created.
The final truth our passage reaveals about Jesus.
John 1:4–5 ESV
In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Jesus is the only source of life and light.
1 Peter 2:6 (ESV)
For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
What does our passage say about man?
John 1:5 ESV
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Based on this passage what does God want you to do?
Matthew 5:14–16 ESV
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
