ShipShape – Week 3
Love One Another Ambassador/Christians should champion others/
Mark Dance: “While Barnabas is not credited with having written a word of the New Testament, through his impact on the lives of the Apostle Paul and John Mark and their subsequent influence on other writers, it is possible to say that Barnabas had a significant role in sixty percent of the New Testament.”2

Acts 11:24 (NASB 95)24for he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And considerable numbers were brought to the Lord.

· real name Joseph/4 characteristics
 Let’s pray.

1. Encouragers value people.

/Intrinsic value of others/Asbury: students, not personality-based/Acts 2: Barnabas arrives/Outpouring on normal people

Acts 4:32-37 (NASB 2020)32And the congregation of those who believed were of one heart and soul; and not one of them claimed that anything belonging to him was his own, but all things were common property to them.

33And with great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and abundant grace was upon them all.

34For there was not a needy person among them, for all who were owners of land or houses would sell them and bring the proceeds of the sales

35and lay them at the apostles’ feet, and they would be distributed to each to the extent that any had need.

36Now Joseph, a Levite of Cyprian birth, who was also called Barnabas by the apostles (which translated means Son of Encouragement),

37owned a tract of land. So he sold it, and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

Overwhelming value for others/

Prov. 25:11

“Like apples of gold in settings of silver Is a word spoken in right circumstances.”

-Isaiah 50:4

4The Lord God has given Me the tongue of disciples, So that I may know how to sustain the weary one with a word. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple.

Cancel criticism & cynicism/Criticism isn’t difference-making/eternity seeing effects
2. Encouragers value the Gospel community/
Ps. Daniel/“Here to help!” everything changed/
Barnabas brings Paul to disciples
Let’s read about it in Acts 9:26.

Acts 9:26-28 (NASB 2020)

26When he came to Jerusalem, he was trying to associate with the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple.

27But Barnabas took hold of him and brought him to the apostles and described to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, and that He had talked to him, and how at Damascus he had spoken out boldly in the name of Jesus.

28And he was with them, moving about freely in Jerusalem, speaking out boldly in the name of the Lord.

· “Took Hold”/Re-Present: 2nd chance @ 1st Impression/Test for Apostles
Encouragement: “There is no pit too deep that He is not deeper still.”/No one judge you by your past/All of us

1 Corinthians 6:9–11 (ESV)

9Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality,

10nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

11And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Gospel community to stand beside Paul

3. Encouragers see the value of others.

· Barnabas succeeds  Turn to Acts 11

Acts 11:22–26 (NASB 2020)

22 The news about them reached the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas off to Antioch.

23 Then when he arrived and witnessed the grace of God, he rejoiced and began to encourage them all with resolute heart to remain true to the Lord;

24 for he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and faith. And considerable numbers were added to the Lord.

25And he left for Tarsus to look for Saul;

26and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. And for an entire year they met with the church and taught considerable numbers of people; and the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.

· Outpouring in Antioch /Goes to find Paul-Same word for Mary & Joseph/
o David/Maxwell: Holding ladder/ not caring who “had the ball”

4. Encouragers restore those who have lost their value.

· not perfect church/1st cent. Church not/Miss. Journey: want to bring Jn Mark
 Turn with me to Acts 15.

Acts 15:36–39 (NASB 2020)

36After some days Paul said to Barnabas, “Let’s return and visit the brothers and sisters in every city in which we proclaimed the word of the Lord, and see how they are.”

37Barnabas wanted to take John, called Mark, along with them also.

38But Paul was of the opinion that they should not take along with them this man who had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work.

39Now it turned into such a sharp disagreement that they separated from one another, and Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus.

· More next week/Barnabas not “Paul loyalist,”/ Barnabas not OK to let JM be thrown away
Barnabas = Loving One Another/ “Give courage”/Recap/What about us? Refresh, lobby, work place/Church worldwide
o Howard Hendricks/“But, there was one Christian brother who actually swam out to get me and would not let me go.
o I fought him, but he pushed aside my fighting, grasped me, put a life jacket around me, and took me to shore.
o By the grace of God, he was the reason I was restored. He would not let me go.”
