OUR CHURCH COVENANT
Having been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God, to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior, and, on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, we do now, in the presence of God, angels and this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another as one body in Christ.
We engage, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to walk together in Christian love, to strive for the advancement of this Church in knowledge, holiness and comfort; to promote its prosperity and spirituality; to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline and doctrines; to contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry, the expenses of the Church, and the spread of the Gospel through all nations.
We also engage to maintain family and personal devotions; to educate our children in the Christian faith; to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintances; to walk circumspectly in the world; to be just in our dealings, faithful in our engagements, and exemplary in our deportment, to avoid all tattling, backbiting and excessive anger; to seek God's help in abstaining from all drugs, drink, and practices which bring unwarranted harm to the body or jeopardize our own or another's faith.
We further engage to watch over one another in brotherly love; to remember one another in prayer; to aid one another in sickness and distress; to cultivate Christian sympathy in feeling and courtesy in speech; to be slow to take offense, but always ready for reconciliation and mindful of the rules of our Savior to secure it without delay.
We moreover engage that when we remove from this place, we will, if possible, unite with a church of like faith where we can carry out the articles of this confession and the spirit of this covenant.
Beau Carpenter joined March 18th of 2012
Graduated OGTC in May of 2015
Ordination on October 1st, 2015
Beau Carpenter having been chosen one "of good report, full of the Spirit, and of wisdom," and capable of using the office well, was set apart as a missionary by the authority and order of Vision Baptist Church of Alpharetta, Georgia on the first day of October, 2015.
1 Timothy 3:1–7 (KJV)
1 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;
5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
Over the last 8 years, the Carpenters has served faithfully at two churches. One as a church planter in Atlanta and the other as an administrator at a church in Covington, GA.
God has brought him them back to us for what I believe is a special and important season in the life of our church. He will serve as our Administrative Pastor. Simply he will help with the work God has given to us as a church.
Ephesians 4:12 “12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:”

Asking Beau to read this and sign it before our church.
Before God and by his grace I resolve the following:
I resolve to keep watch over my own life, seeking to live in a manner pleasing to God and worthy of his calling. (Acts 20:28Ephesians 4:1)
I resolve to watch over and pray for the flock of God entrusted to our care as one who must give an account. (Acts 20:28Hebrews 13:17)
I resolve to love, guide, and care for God’s people — not by constraint, but from a willing spirit; not motivated by personal gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to me, but rather being an example to the flock. (1 Peter 5:2-3)
I resolve to set an example for other believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. (1 Timothy 4:12)
I resolve to love my family, to raise my children in the training and instruction of the Lord, to manage my own household well, and to maintain a good reputation in the community. (Ephesians 5:256:21 Timothy 3:4,7)
I resolve to study the Scriptures that I may teach what is in accord with sound doctrine and handle God’s Word correctly to the best of my ability. (2 Timothy 2:15Titus 2:1)
I resolve in my teaching to show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech befitting the Word of God. (Titus 2:7)
I resolve to preach God’s Word, to be prepared in season and out of season, to correct, rebuke and encourage — with patience and careful instruction. (2 Timothy 4:2)
I resolve to proclaim the whole counsel of God from the Scriptures without fear or hesitation. (Acts 20:27)
I resolve to discharge faithfully all the duties of my ministry in a manner that is honorable to both God and man. (2 Timothy 4:5)
These things I resolve before God, asking his grace that I may fulfill them and his forgiveness where I may fail or fall short.

Sermon Introduction

As a father I cannot even begin to calculate how much of my life is spent answering questions. There are all kind of questions.
Questions by curious minds; Dad why is the sky blue?
Questions to test me; Dad, who is your favorite kid?
Questions asked to set me up for other questions; Dad do you want me to feel special and loved on my 13th birthday?
Questions that are asked to prove I do not know what I am talking about; Really?
Today’s question is biblical (pertaining to God’s Word), theological (relates to your understanding of God, and vital (pertains to your life and eternity)

We are currently in a section with many questions?

Whose Authority? | Luke 20:1-19
Render Unto Caesar, Really? | Luke 20:19-26
Marriage & the Resurrection? | Luke 20:27-40
Who is David's Lord? | Luke 20:41-44
Review:
Last week walked you through the question the Sadduccees had for Jesus with what appeared to be a math word problem.
woman + 7 husbands = what in the resurrection?
They were left speechless. Luke 20:40 “40 And after that they durst (dared) not ask him any question at all.”

Today Jesus is asking the questions.

You would do well to listen to His question.
You should consider how you would answer this question.
We must also take a good, hard look that Jesus gives about those who love religion but do not love Him.
Luke 20:41–47 (KJV)
41 And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David’s son?
42 And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 43 Till I make thine enemies thy footstool. 44 David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son?
45 Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples,
46 Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts; 47 Which devour widows’ houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.
Simply:
True religion is to know Christ as Lord
false religion is to be religious to impress people. (for next week)

Prayer

Clarity in explaining the passage
Honesty in our response

First the question is biblical.

Here we have a rabbinic antinomy
a contradiction between two beliefs or conclusions that are in themselves reasonable; a paradox.
The question is asked both before and after a quotation of Psalm 110:1.
Who is David’s Lord?
Jesus' goal is not to deny either premise but to show a relationship between two concepts that otherwise might appear to be in tension.
In effect, Jesus is saying, more important than Jesus being David's son is that he is David's Lord.
Or to answer Jesus' final question:
The fact that He is David's son is less significant than that he is David's Lord.
Davidic sonship is not being denied; in fact, Davidic sonship is an important concept to Luke.

Before we get into today’s passage let’s take a field trip to Psalm 110.

This chapter is referenced in the NT more than any other passage.
Studied on April 22 on a Thursday night
We were faced with a question of who was speaking in Psalm 110:1 “1 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.”
Important to know that David is speaking. Some believe this is someone, like Zadok the priest, speaking of David.
Though not necessary it is very helpful how the word Lord is spelled differently in most of our Bibles. (All caps vs Capital L)
The Bible is the best commentary on itself.
We looked this passage in Luke 20 of Jesus at a “press conference” where he answered questions about politics, taxes, resurrection, and now His Lordship
We have in Jesus a King/Priest. The better we understand those roles in our lives the better we see the beauty of His holiness.

Message delivered is significant

David received this message/oracle from God Matthew 22:43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
Here David is referring to his descendant as his master/Lord
This is not how this normally works. I remind Thatcher of this often.
Sitting at the right hand of Yahweh means that this king was to be exalted to the power and dominion and honor of heaven itself—before he establishes dominion in all the earth
A greater than David or Solomon is coming Luke 11:31 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

Second the question is theological

True religion is to know Christ as Lord

Luke 20:41-44 “41 And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David’s son? 42 And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 43 Till I make thine enemies thy footstool. 44 David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son?

The most important question you will ever be asked to answer is about the person of Jesus.

We follow more than a set of principles, although we have a system of thought and morals.
We are more than members of a church, although every Christian should belong to a church.
We are more than people who have had spiritual experience, although it must be experiential.
We are people who follow Jesus as Lord. We have a personal relationship with the living God through His Son Jesus Christ.
John 17:3 “3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”
Who truly is Jesus? For Christians this is most fundamental question of faith.

This involves two essentials:

Correct understanding
Proper response

Correct understanding of the Lord

Jesus wasn’t playing theological games with these men. He wasn’t bringing up an interesting verse to stimulate a good debate.
Jesus was doing evangelism.
Jesus is helping people find and follow Jesus.

How can Messiah be both David’s son and David’s Lord at the same time?

The paradox cannot be resolved unless Messiah is both human (David’s son) and divine (David’s Lord) in the same person
Never let anyone try to persuade you that Jesus never claimed to be God. It is plan here. The time has come.
Blind Bartimaus had it write when he called Jesus “Son of David”
This is not being argued.
The genealogy in Matthew 1 is quite effective.
If even the great King David calls Messiah his Lord, then don’t you think that you must do so also?

This Psalm will be referenced again very soon.

Luke 22:69 “69 Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.”
40 days after resurrection Jesus will ascend to the Father’s right hand
In Ephesians we learn that everything is placed under His feet as prophesied in Psalm 110
Ephesians 1:20-22 “20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, 21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: 22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,”
Transition: To know Jesus Christ in the proper sense, you must have the right understanding of His person. This should lead to a proper response.

These is the where the question is vital, it gets personal

Proper response to the Lord

Every person should respond to this truth by trusting Christ as Savior and yielding to Him as Lord, even as David did.

To understand is to follow.

The proper response is not just believing intellectually that Jesus is the Messiah or that He is your Savior.
The proper response means believing in Jesus in the sense that you follow Him as Lord, so that in thought, word, and deed you are growing to be more and more like Him.
In school some of you preferred the multiple choice option over the essay. It gave you at least a 25% chance. Others of you in here preferred the short essay. That way you could pretend to know the answer even if you didn’t.
Did you ever have one of those quizzes where the teacher wanted to see if you were reading the instructions. It would tell you to not fill the test out but wait two minutes and turn in the test.
This is a test where if there is understanding it is more than intellectual. We begin a new creature. Our lives are completely reshaped by the truth.

We will grow in grace

2 Peter 3:18 “18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”
When I was nine years old I repented of my sins and accepted the gift offered to me by Jesus. If you asked me if I was “born again” I doubt I would have know to say yes, tough I was.
As a teenager I knew that Jesus had all claims upon my life and I was not yielding to Him as I should be. When I heard heard that He is was the Lord of my life. My heart said yes. I knew this.
I believe I became a child of God as a child. But as I became an adult. I had adult size decisions to make. I needed to grow in grace and knowledge of His Lordship in my life.

This is the Jesus of the Bible.

Mark 12:37 “37 David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son? And the common people heard him gladly.

In contrast with the Jewish leaders who had been trying to trap Jesus with subtle questions (cf. v. 13), the large Passover crowd was listening all along to His teaching with delight, though not necessarily with comprehension.

I do not know if the new modern rending of Jesus would be crucified by this world.
We would be adopted as our mascot for our causes.
He would be so much like “one of us”, we would not be intimidated to go to His house but we would no revere Him as judge or worship Him as the one who died for our sins

Answer to the question

Luke 20:41 “41 And he said unto them, How say they that Christ is David’s son?”

It will take the resurrection to fully reveal who Jesus is.

The psalm shows the promise that through David's son eventually all the king's enemies would be defeated.
How can the Son of David be the Lord of David?
The mystery is solved. And it is only solved in light of the incarnation.
Because though Jesus was born of Mary in a manger 2000 years ago he is the co-eternal, co-existent, all powerful son of God.
When we take our eyes off Jesus, we immediately lose our way around the Bible!
And he used an illustration of a sundial. He lived a long time ago; he lived in the middle of the nineteenth century. So, the sundial would be out in the churchyard or out in the back garden, and he said, “When the sundial exists on a cloudy day, all that you have on the sundial is figures. It’s just figures. But if the clouds part—if the sun shines and the clouds part—then the figures convey a message, and then the finger points.” And he said, “And that is as it is when men and women turn to the Scriptures.”

This is what happened to Simon Peter

Matthew 16:16-17 “16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.”

Has the sun broken through the clouds for you?

Yes, you knew Jesus the son of man. You know Jesus the historical figure.
Do you know Jesus as the Lord of the Universe?
Believer are you growing in your knowledge of who Jesus is relation to your adult life. 2 Peter 3:18 “18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”
If you’ve never done so, I encourage you to read the Gospels and ask, “Who is Jesus Christ? What claims does He make about Himself? Could such a man as this merely be David’s son, or must He also be David’s Lord? And, if He is David’s Lord, should He not also be my Lord?”
Next week we will see there are still..
clothes to wear
places to sit
events to attend
and long prayers that are prayed
By those who want Jesus in their story but just not as their Lord.

Conclusion

Today I will not ask you to bow your head and close your ideas.
This is often fitting as we want allow one another to make personal decisions in a public setting.
However today we are speaking about the Lordship of Christ.
After I pray we will sing.
Why don’t you take your next step or first step in following Jesus, our Lord.
