Matthew 12:1–8 (ESV)
1 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, and they began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. 2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, “Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.” 3 He said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, and those who were with him: 4 how he entered the house of God and ate the bread of the Presence, which it was not lawful for him to eat nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? 5 Or have you not read in the Law how on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath and are guiltless? 6 I tell you, something greater than the temple is here. 7 And if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”
Mark 2:27–28 (ESV)
27 And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”
Jesus taught that Sabbath law was overridden for such as
(1) genuine human need (1Sm 21:1–6);
(2) worship (Nm 28:9–10);
(3) acts of kindness (Hs 6:6).
Numbers 28:9–10 ESV
9 “On the Sabbath day, two male lambs a year old without blemish, and two tenths of an ephah of fine flour for a grain offering, mixed with oil, and its drink offering: 10 this is the burnt offering of every Sabbath, besides the regular burnt offering and its drink offering.
These are all scripture that the pharisees would have know about yet chose to ignore them.
The religious leaders of Jesus time felt their offerings and religious acts gave them righteousness.
The believe that heaven and blessings from from works is still believed today by most Christians.
If I give enough money
If I volunteer enough
If I join the church membership
If I go to all the events.
All this is great but doesn't lead to heaven, doesn't lead to blessings.
These things only come with a personal relationship with God.
God wants to START with your HEART not your Actions.
Hosea 6:6 (ESV)
6 For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.
Sacrifice pleases God, but he rather have your Heart.
Hebrews 13:16 (ESV)
16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
Proverbs 21:3 (ESV)
3 To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.
CSB Study Bible: Notes (Chapter 9)
Matthew wanted Jewish Christians to view their sacrifices as gifts of gratitude for forgiveness rather than acts that accomplish atonement.
We all need Mercy,
James 2:8–13 (ESV)
8 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. 9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. 11 For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. 12 So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty. 13 For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
Mercy is Found when we get Closer to God
Hebrews 4:16 (ESV)
16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Be an example God’s mercy, love , and kindness in our actions.
Luke 6:35–36 (ESV)
35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. 36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.
Show Mercy to those that need it, not just the ones that asked for it.
Those that have wronged you They need mercy
Those that live a sinful life They need mercy
Those that believe differently then you. They need mercy
Those that hate you. They need mercy
All of us..... We Need Mercy
