Do Works Matter?

Romans 1:16-17- Tells us the Righteous Will Live by Faith.
Romans 2:6 says God will repay us based upon what we have done.
Does this contradict itself?
Let’s look deeper.
2:6 is a quote from Psalm 62. Lets look at that verse.
Psalm 62 : Who is David talking about?
Those who plot against God’s Chosen King.
Those who lie with their lips and do the opposite in their hearts.
This is the same types of people Paul refers to in Romans.
The people would have known this Psalm. Paul is calling to memory a verse to help them understand what he is saying.
So here in Romans 2 is Paul Contradicting himself? Who are the people of Rome looking out for?
So we have Irreligious people who need Jesus and Religious people who need Jesus.
Is Paul saying works matter?
YES!__
NO!__
Yes, but not as the reason for salvation. As evidence that someone has faith in Jesus Christ.
How do we know if our hearts are right with God?
Persistence in doing good
Doing good is a pattern of your life.
Seek glory, honor, and immortality
God gives eternal life to those who seek after Him.
How do we know if we are not right with God?
Self Seeking
Rejecting truth and following evil
God’s judgement will be impartial and fair. No matter our background the only thing we will be judged on will be our relationship with Christ.
Paul’s warnings.
First, If you know God’s law and don’t follow it you will be judged by the law.
If you don’t have the law and still follow it then it gets confusing.
This section is a little confusing. I believe that Paul is talking to the Jew about a person who is better than many Jews without being given the law. In other words we inherently know what to do even if we don’t have the law given to us. But, for this thought experiment to work we must agree that they have been given the Name of Jesus.
What was the best thing that happened this week?
What was the worst thing that happened this week?
When you read the signs of being in right or wrong standing with God, does this encourage or discourage you?
Are we able to follow the law to the letter?
Take Prayer Requests and Pray for one another.
