continuing our series within the series
last week we talked about anger, and how we need to be aware of anger in our own lives, but if we have caused anger in others as well.
the NT has called the church to be unified and at peace with one another, and we have to be intentional to keep the peace in the body
Part 2 of the relationship subseries can be constued as a marriage talk, but everyone who is not married, I need you to listen closely

Valentine’s Day is Tuesday, so for everyone who forgot, you’re welcome.
How do you celebrate Valentine’s Day?
Please don’t be the couple that’s like, “Everyday is Valentine’s Day.” Gross, and liar. My favorite is when one spouse says that, and the other gives a look. Someone didn’t get the message.
I have to say, I think Valentine’s Day is more important then ever. Divorce rates are through the roof right now, and the sanctity of marriage is under attack. I believe we need to make every effort to solidify and celebrate our marriages.
Doing the things that keep our relationship and marriages alive is probably the best safeguard against the topic we’re looking at this morning
“You have heard the commandment that says, ‘You must not commit adultery.’
But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
So if your eye—even your good eye—causes you to lust, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
And if your hand—even your stronger hand—causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
this is one of those passages that we break out when we talk about pornography, so some of us have heard it a lot
but this morning I want to shed a different light, and draw some things out that serve as good reminders if nothing else.

‘Lust’ actually means, ‘to desire, to yearn for’
For the Jewish people, adultery was often taught in light of theft, not purity
When it says ‘good hand’, Jesus isn’t talking about your hand
so let’s break this passage into 2 parts. Part 1 is Defining the Sin
It comes across that Jesus is hammering on the men in this teaching, but as usual, there is something lost in the English translation
Our translations say to look at a woman with lust, but it could have just as easily been translated, look at her in a way that causes her to lust
All the married people know the look I’m talking about. Don’t practice on each other right now, I’ll never get the guys back on track. Ladies, I know you can turn it off. Guys, I need you to focus.
the major point that Jesus is trying to make is to guard your heart. Your heart should yearn and desire your spouse and your spouse alone.
the major attack on marriages right now is via pornography, but it is not the only thing. We can be adulterous in our desire for work, for our hobbies. If we are not intentional in fostering a connecting and desire for our spouse, there is no shortage of things that will take fill that spot. There’s not shortage of things that try to steal time that should be going towards our spouse

you can commit adultery without being married. How you ask?
You need to remember that sex is sacred and set apart for marriage. It is a deeply unifying act, and everyone you have sex with, you lose a part of yourself when the relationship ends
The other thing you need to remember is that God sees the beginning from the end, and even though you may not be married now, God knows if and when you will be. This is why the apostle Paul says to keep the marriage bed pure; when the time comes, you will really be able to give all of you to your spouse.
The Response
The Response
Jesus teaches a fairly drastic response, and the question is whether He is being literal.
I was reading a commentator that shared about a fellow Christian who was blind, yet his number one problem was lust. Clearly gouging out eyes won’t work.
Jesus is trying to communicate the severity of sin.
Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away.
These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.
sin in our lives is destructive. The same way we take drastic measures to remove cancer or any other disease that will kill us, we need to take drastic measures to remove sin from our lives. In this case, we need to to decisive in the realm of adultery
The issue is guarding our heart. God has given you an active imagination, and we need to be careful what we feed that imagination with.
And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
