God’s people seek the Spirit’s leading, obey the Spirit’s calling, and are empowered by the Spirit for ministry.

A Spirit-Filled Congregation

The Lord had saved people from all walks of life and backgrounds and brought them together in worship of Jesus Christ. Antioch was a very diverse church, and it led to them being concerned about the nations receiving the Gospel. They were the first to begin preaching to the gentiles as a regular occurrence.
Acts 11:23-24 “When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad, and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose, for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were added to the Lord.” They were led by men full of the Holy Spirit!
Acts 11:26 “and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a great many people. And in Antioch the disciples were first called Christians.”
They were led by the Holy Spirit to begin meeting the needs of the Jerusalem church Acts 11:29 “So the disciples determined, every one according to his ability, to send relief to the brothers living in Judea.”
They were engaged in teaching and training leaders. Acts 13:1.
If we want to be a mission minded church, we start by sharing the Gospel with others at home.

A Spirit-Led Commission

How did they hear the call of God upon Barnabas and Saul?
They were focused on God’s will - worship and fasting.
They were listening to the Holy Spirit.
The HOLY SPIRIT was the one who called them. It is His prerogative. The Holy Spirit is on mission building the church of the Lord Jesus Christ, calling out the laborers.
Matthew 9:37-38 “Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.””
A healthy church should be praying for missionaries to be raised up, and supporting them in missions.

A Spirit-Empowered Confrontation

When you get involved in God’s mission, expect opposition.
Satan will try to distract from the Gospel by any means, often using people.
Paul was empowered by the Spirit to confront the Devil’s deception.
We live in a day of deception, but we must be bold for the truth.
1 john 4:4 “Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”
Application
Come to worship the Lord and seek His will!
Come to pray for and with one another. Pray that God will raise up missionaries and pray that God will direct us in the support of missions.
Expect opposition, but rely upon the power of the Lord to stand for the truth.
