John 14:12–14 (LSB) “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do because I go to the Father. 13 “Whatever you ask in My name, this will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 “If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.

Pray for what?

Vs. 13 says: “Whatever you ask in My name…
“Whatever,”
There is nothing excluded in “whatever.”
It tells us that we can and we ought to pray about everything, not just the missionaries on Sunday morning at church.
Prayer is so practical.
It is applicable to anything.
We limit God when we limit the practicality of prayer.
So many things are limited when and where and how they can help us.
But prayer is not limited.
So, tonight, can we pray

Pray when?

Again: “Whatever you ask in My name ...
“Whatever.” also speaks of the prominence that prayer should have in our lives.
Prayer should be on our lips at all times.
Prayer should be prominent in our life.
The hymn writer had it right when he said,
‘O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.’ (Joseph Scriven, in ‘What a Friend we Have in Jesus.’)

Pray How?

“Whatever you ask in My name …
“In my name.”
That does not mean just saying ‘in Jesus name’ at the end of your prayer.
It means pray in alignment with who Jesus is.
“In my name” means everything the name represents and stands for.
“In my name” means to pray according to the character, Word and will of Christ.
Anything outside the character and will of Christ cancels the promise of the prayer.
This is where many fail.
But in Jesus’ prayer for Himself and His disciples and THEIR disciples in John 17, He prayed:
John 17:20–24 (LSB) “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; 21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 “The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; 23 I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. 24 “Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.

Pray in Faith

Vs. 13 this will I do …
“That will I do.”
What a great promise.
It shows the great power of God in being able to answer our prayers.
As great as the promise is, the prayer must be within the perimeter of prayer to qualify.
1 John 5:14–15 (LSB) And this is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.
Many folk blame God for not fulfilling His promises when that is not the problem at all.
The problem is the person praying incorrectly.
James 4:2–3 (LSB) You lust and do not have, so you murder. You are envious and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.
If you pray and God does not answer your prayer as you prayed it, you need to examine how you are praying.
God’s promises are plain, so are the prerequisites.
Don’t ignore the prerequisites.

Why do we pray in the Name of Jesus?

"so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”
Messianic glory
This purpose for prayer helps us to better understand the parameters of prayer.
The Father will not be glorified by our selfish, fleshly prayers;
but prayer truly prayed in ‘the name of Jesus’ will be answered, for the answer will honor and glorify God.
That is why God wants us to pray.
He wants us to honor Him, and a truly praying person will honor the Lord by praying.
