**Turn to 1 Peter 5:1

Recap:

FAR from HOME - EXILES & sojourners… = SUFFERING at times … YET WE can have HOPE in the midst of suffering
Last week:
SUFFERING = at times GOD’S WILL…God uses it to PURIFY our FAITH…LIKE GOLD is purified IN FIRE.
Our RESPONSE to SUFFERING should be ENTRUSTING our lives to God- faithful Creator....both SOVEREIGN & GOOD! & CONTINUING to DO GOOD
Now, we’re going to look at a final time where Peter offers instructions on how Christians should live within the church more specifically.
Read text & pray
32-31 MINUTES LEFT...🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢

Intro:

How many of you here today have ever considered the fact that humility is attractive?
Sometimes people will root for or against a certain sports team based on a particularly humble or proud player

Need:

We NEED to KNOW GOD VALUES HUMILITY
Also HOW to LIVE AMONGST BODY of CHRIST.
what should characterize our relationships amongst one another?
🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢

Text:

Thought 1: Peter’s command to Church Leaders
1 Peter 5:1–5 (ESV)
1 So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed:
2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly;
3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.
“SO”/THEREFORE…following up on CONTINUING to DO GOOD & entrusting to God…
ELDERS- position of LEADERSHIP in church.
Also overseers/shepherds/pastors...
for LEADERS, doing GOOD = SHEPHERDING WELL, despite what comes.
🐢🐢🐢🐢
PETER ADDRESSES LEADERS here B4 the rest of the CONGREGATION
PASTOR = role of SHEPHERD…synonymous terms.
Shepherding includes LEADING & PROTECTING
LEADING & directing, helping GUIDE PEOPLE, CASTING VISION for congregation
PROTECTING from FALSE DOCTRINE…WOLVES...
🐢🐢
Last week:
JUDGMENT BEGINNING w/ elders in the HOUSEHOLD of GOD.
LEADERSHIP - held to greatest standard of ACCOUNTABILITY.
James 3:1- not many should become leaders, judged w/ greater strictness.
🐢🐢
PETER SPEAKS to those in authority from his OWN POSITION of AUTHORITY—FELLOW ELDER & shepherd.
He humbly didn’t use his apostolic authority, INSTEAD of COMMANDING…HE appeals/EXHORTS
2. Peter speaks as an EYE WITNESS of the SUFFERING of CHRIST.
Peter was an EYEWITNESS of CHRIST, traveled w/ him 3.5 YEARS…INNER CIRCLE...
“Witness”
word used for a LEGAL WITNESS who would TESTIFY in COURT
Recently TESTIFIED regarding CAR ACCIDENT…because I was an EYE-WITNESS
Likewise Peter was a witness…but we also want to CONSIDER what KIND of WITNESS he was.
GRUDEM: PETER’S WITNESS = 3 FOLD DENIAL...
INCLUSION of WITNESS = GRACE…2ND CHANCES!
HE AGAIN BECAME A WITNESS!
He FAILED WORSE than ANY other DISCIPLE EXCEPT JUDAS! Yet, he FOUND REDEMPTION, led early church, wrote this letter, etc.!
3. Third identifier- he’s a PARTAKER in the GLORY that WILL BE REVEALED.
LAST WK: Peter pointed out we SHARE in CHRIST’S SUFFERINGS...
THIS WK: SHARE in FUTURE GLORY!
The future hope of glory will empower the saints to persevere no matter what comes our way
🐢🐢🐢🐢
(V2) AFTER laying out CREDENTIALS, PETER COMMANDS elders to "SHEPHERD” (lead & protect)
Elders shepherd, “GOD’S FLOCK”
Tom Schreiner....it isn’t their own flocks, but God’s that they’re merely entrusted with.
AS a PASTOR- I HELP LEAD this church, share Scripture, preach, etc. BUT this ISN’T MY CHURCH... Grace Chapel is a group of believers that belongs to God.
ALL LEADERS = MANAGERS, not owners.
🐢🐢🐢🐢
THEN, Peter says to EXERCISE OVERSIGHT- implies ACCOUNTABILITY...
SHEPHERDS are ENTRUSTED w/ CARE of the SHEEP...
PASTORS/leaders ENTRUSTED w/ CARE of CHURCH, watching over congregation.
will have to GIVE an ACCOUNT for THOSE under their CARE!
Then, Peter goes on to list a few ways that leaders should lead and ways they shouldn’t.
NOT done w/ COMPULSION, but WILLINGLY.
Shouldn’t feel “obligated”
It’s a PRIVILEGE & HONOR.
All those who lead in the church shouldn’t have the attitude of dragging their feet and sighing!
Serving God is a blessing! Our PERFECT GOD is WILLING to USE IMPERFECT PEOPLE for His purposes!
John Maxwell...I get to, not I’ve got to.
LEADERSHIP ISN’T for SHAMEFUL GAIN, but should be DONE EAGERLY.
Shameful gain here has the sense of, “GREEDY for MATERIAL GAIN or PROFIT” (Louw-Nida).
Many people PROSTITUTE the PULPIT to DRAW a LARGE CROWD & get a BIG PAYCHECK.
PAID MINISTRY = BIBLICAL, but TEACHERS shouldn’t be getting RICH by HALF-TRUTHS & false doctrine.
Joel Olsteen- “I don’t know what they believe but they love God....” Large congregation, probably mostly unconverted people...
Andy Stanley- the gay “Christians” have more faith than him.
NEXT PASTOR…PLEAD…NOT SOMEONE who’ll JUST FILL CHURCH by TICKLING EARS!
-------
I want to see our congregation grow…but TRUE GROWTH of BIBLE-BELIEVING, BORN-AGAIN Christians is TYPICALLY SLOW…there are times of revival, but this isn’t typical.
3. Lastly, LEADERS SHOULDN’T LEAD by DOMINEERING, BUT BY EXAMPLE...
LEADERS WON’T be PERFECT, BUT we should BE EXEMPLARY in the lives we lead.
Grudem “Thus all in leadership positions in the church should realize that the requirement to live a life worthy of imitation is not optional—it is a major part of the job, challenging though such responsibility may be.
LEADERS DON’T BOSS people around, because JESUS is THE BOSS!
LEADERS must LEAD W/ HUMILITY
Transition: After Peter explains how elders should lead, he shares with them the result of their shepherding. Look at verse 4.
🐢🐢🐢----20 MINUTES LEFT-----🐢🐢🐢
Thought 2: The Leader’s Reward
4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
JESUS = CHIEF SHEPHERD
Every OTHER PASTOR = UNDER-SHEPHERD
Following in Christ’s example…but not the savior!
-------------
APPEARING of chief shepherd = 2ND COMING.
Remember, we SUFFER on the ROAD to GLORY! 2nd coming should bring us HOPE!
------------
Again, to leaders, he shares that there will be a CROWN of GLORY that is UNFADING!
1ST CENTURY... CROWNS/wreathes as TROPHIES for winners of ATHLETIC COMPETITION.
made out of PLANTS, would PERISH.
Those who follow Christ till the end receive a crown that will never perish! NEVER LOSE its BRIGHTNESS...
As believers, we await our eternal reward! We SHOULDN’T BE SWAYED by the THINGS of THIS LIFE!
Especially for leaders/teachers, KEEPING EYES on REAL PRIZE! Not trying to live our best lives now!!
WHEN you LOSE SIGHT of ETERNITY…THINGS can be TEMPTING, especially worldly gain for leaders.
Transition: After addressing elders, Peter is going to move to addressing those who are younger and the rest of the believers within the congregation.
🐢🐢🐢----17-18 MINUTES LEFT-----🐢🐢🐢
Thought 3: The Priority of Humility
5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
From elders/spiritual leaders, to THOSE who are YOUNGER.
NATURALLY younger (probably)
Wayne Grudem- those who are younger usually STRUGGLE MORE w/ authority & submission.
So, Peter shares for YOUNGER (ESP.) to SUBMIT to LEADERSHIP…GOD has ESTABLISHED LEADERS to CARE for OTHERS
**OFFICE has AUTHORITY as FAR as it is ALIGNED w/ GOD’S WORD. When done right, worth submitting.
------
Reminder: WE’RE ALL SUBMITTED at SOME POINT & Peter’s mentioned this before.
All CHRISTIANS SUBMIT to GOVERNING AUTHORITIES/human institutions (in the Lord)
Slaves w/ masters
wives w/ husbands
& ALL of CREATION to Jesus CHRIST!
Even if you’re “at the TOP of the FOOD CHAIN” at work, in the home, in the church, you’re STILL REQUIRED to SUBMIT to CHRIST as a Christian…so submission is a task for everyone at some point.
🐢🐢
Then, Peter addresses everyone.
**If you THINK you’ve been OFF the HOOK because you AREN’T YOUNG or in LEADERSHIP, THIS one’s FOR YOU!
Peter says, “CLOTHE YOURSELVES, all of you, with humility toward one another…”
** NO EXCEPTIONS!
Called to be HUMBLE specifically in relationships/relationally.
----------
(Q) - Have any of you ever walked outside naked accidentally? Probably not.
I’m sure the VAST MAJORITY of us HAVEN’T ON PURPOSE EITHER
**You don’t go out naked, because YOU INTENTIONALLY GET DRESSED. We don’t even have to think about it.
But AS BELIEVERS, how INTENTIONAL are we to “CLOTHE ourselves with HUMILITY”??
🐢🐢
Humility towards one another:
Counting others as MORE SIGNIFICANT than yourself
treating others as you WANT to BE TREATED.
Giving others BENEFIT of the DOUBT/Not judging motives
**It can be very EASY to JUMP to CONCLUSIONS about others and JUDGE MOTIVES....and it is likewise EASY to JUSTIFY OURSELVES.
Great example: PARENTS w/ NEW BABY
Everyone feels justified staying in bed because they’re tired.
SELAH w/ GRASSHOPPER in ear last night.
**IMAGINE JESUS when CALMING the STORM… “I’m TOO TIRED, give me 5 more MINUTES...”
Easier to wait it out until your spouse caves
What does humility look like here? you get out of bed & understand that your spouse is tired too.
**Remember as Christ-followers, we’re to live SET-APART LIVES!
How do we look different from nonbelieving spouses?
Or are you the EMPLOYEE that is willing to DO the JOB or TASK that EVERYONE HATES to be a blessing to them?
🐢🐢
***Above all- this should CHARACTERIZE our RELATIONSHIPS in the CHURCH!!
We should be QUICK to GIVE others GRACE, the benefit of the doubt.
PREFER OTHERS, treat them as you want to be treated.
Tom Schreiner says it nicely when he writes, “Humility is the oil that allows relationships in the church to run smoothly and lovingly.”
🐢🐢
LIVING w/ HUMILITY is ATTRACTIVE to GOD!!
Grace to humble, opposes the proud!
Wayne Grudem says, “Grace is God’s undeserved favour toward us, and is needed not only to save us from eternal judgment but also to enable us to live the Christian life. The whole quotation applies well to daily Christian living, since the present tense verbs give the sense ‘God is continually opposing the proud but continually giving grace to the humble’.”
GOD’S OPPOSITION here means that he RESISTS those who are PROUD or he sets himself against them…opposite teams, pulling against one another.
HUMILITY should CHARACTERIZE ALL BELIEVERS, everywhere, regardless of position, status, wealth, gender…live w/ humility towards one another.
-----------
HUMILITY was and is a COUNTER CULTURAL ATTRIBUTE. 1st century it would have led to mockery.
How we as God’s chosen people, his royal nation, his holy priesthood, show the world WE’RE DIFFERENT!
Big Idea:
Christian believers, regardless of age or position, should live lives characterized by humility towards one another and avoid pride so they continue to receive grace from God.

Intention:

Our worship response to God this morning is continuing to think accurately about ourselves, not higher or less than we ought to think so that we can live humble lives of love towards our fellow believers.
🐢🐢🐢----5-7 MINUTES LEFT-----🐢🐢🐢
Cross/Gospel:
HUMILITY of Jesus CHRIST
HUMBLE BEGINNINGS can have GLORIOUS ENDINGS...
CHRIST DIDN’T HOLD onto his DIVINITY for ADVANTAGE…but emptied himself to serve others.
Culminated @ CALVARY…where Christ died for sinners.
**If ANYONE COULD have JUSTIFIED themselves it would have been JESUS…imagine him pleading w/ the Father that WE WEREN’T WORTH DYING FOR because we were wretched...
Yet CHRIST DIED FOR US while we were STILL SINNERS- DISPLAYING the LOVE of GOD.
**You can be SAVED BY FAITH in him TODAY!
The suffering of Christ ended w/ resurrection, glory, and exaltation!
He is our EXAMPLE of HUMILITY & FUTURE GLORY...
**We CAN’T HUMBLE ourselves INTO the KINGDOM. But ONCE we’re SAVED, we are to PURSUE HUMILITY in obedience to Him, by His grace.
🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢

Takeaways:

For those in any position of LEADERSHIP....SERVING God in leadership is a PRIVILEGE.
Do it w/ EAGERNESS & GLADNESS
Remember, you’re under authority of chief shepherd
We’re all to be CLOTHED in HUMILITY toward ONE ANOTHER
To be willing to prefer others over ourselves, to give grace to others, to assume the best about others and give them the benefit of the doubt, and to treat them as we want to be treated.
God opposes the proud, but gives grace to humble.
Blessing in humility…remember to let God do the exalting, or he’ll oppose you!

Application:

When GETTING DRESSED in the morning, remind yourself to “PUT ON HUMILITY”…mental note to consider how you treat people.
DON’T GO out NAKED as REGARDS HUMILITY!! Should be an external display that people can see in how we treat others.
