An Introduction to the Prophetic

What is the Sword of the Spirit?

A two-edged sword
Hebrews 4:12 NKJV
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
The Word of God
The LOGOS:
John 1:1–2 NKJV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.
The LOGOS is ultimately the pre-existent Christ. It is God’s Word spoken for all times. It is eternal. It does not change. It applies to everyone for all time whether they believe and obey it or not.
The RHEMA
Ephesians 6:17 NKJV
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
The RHEMA is the word spoken by a living voice. It is God speaking in the NOW.
The two sides of the blade come together in a point, a balance that can pierce. This speaks of the truth.

What is prophecy?

Prophecy is NOT Preaching

Preach (euangelizo)
Prophesy (propheteuo)

Prophecy is NOT the Study of End Time Events

Prophecy is a Foundational Ministry in Building the Church

Ephesians 2:19–22 NKJV
Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.
Apostles: Establishes the LOGOS Edge of the Cornerstone Foundation (Doctrine)
Prophets: Establishes the RHEMA Edge of the Cornerstone Foundation (Direction)

Prophecy is Speaking a NOW word by the Spirit of God

1 Corinthians 12:3 NKJV
Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 14:1–4 NKJV
Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

Prophecy does NOT replace Scripture

On the contrary; Scripture is the measure by which prophetic utterances are judged.
1 Thessalonians 5:20–21 NKJV
Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good.
Prophetic utterances and ministries are to be tested and discerned.
1 Corinthians 12:1–3 NKJV
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.

Prophetic Utterances are NOT Equal to Scripture

1 Corinthians 14:29 NKJV
Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge.

Prophecy is Evidence of the Last Days Outpouring of the Holy Spirit

Acts 2:17–18 NKJV
‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy.
1 Corinthians 12:7–11 NKJV
But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

The Testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of Prophecy

Revelation 19:10 NKJV
And I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

We are not to Despise Prophecy

1 Thessalonians 5:20 NKJV
Do not despise prophecies.

We are to Desire to Prophesy

1 Corinthians 14:1–4 NKJV
Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
1 Corinthians 14:39 NKJV
Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues.

We are not to Despise Prophecy

1 Thessalonians 5:20 NKJV
Do not despise prophecies.

Prophecy is to be Released Decently and in Order

1 Corinthians 14:39–40 NKJV
Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues. Let all things be done decently and in order.
