Holiness Begins on the Inside
For us to be part of the body of Christ, we must first be baptized with HG
We’re adopted into Christ
We’re not naturally God’s people
This was the Jews - we’re Gentiles
Comparison of adopting our boys…same people, different identity
It is more than just in a name
Holiness means letting the Spirit and personality of Christ to shine through us.
-David K. Bernard, Pursuing Holiness
The entire purpose of holiness is for us to live the way He did
To be a Christian literally means to live like Christ
When we’re living like Christ, we are commissioned to reach the world like He did
We may be the only Bible that this world may read
Christian Characteristics
What characteristics should we display?
Paul addresses this with one of the problem churches, Galatia
Christian Characteristics = the Fruit of the Spirit
Paul is not the only one to address this
While speaking in tongues is the INITIAL evidence of the Holy Spirit, we must look to holiness as the ABIDING evidence.
I know people that have spoken in tongues almost everyday, but it seems as if they don’t have an abiding impact of the HS
Their life doesn’t seem impacted…they know how to worship and surrender to God in the moment, but they don’t surrender their life to Him
Holiness is what happens when you surrender your life to Him
Love
The most basic element of Christian living
We are commanded to love our fellow Christians, our neighbors and even our enemies
Love from a Christian is supposed to be universal
If we don’t have love for others, we don’t have love for God
If we love the world, we do not love God
If we can fulfill love, we can fulfill holiness
love drives out the derisive characteristics of the world
jealousy, strife, talebearing, complaining, bitterness, etc.
Knowing the truth of God’s Word (doctrine) and doing good things cannot replace love
Joy
When you first recieved the HS, what was your response?
Some have been found laughing uncontrollably…others can’t stop smiling
I have never seen anyone get the HG and be immediately angry
1 Peter 1:8 (KJV 1900)
... joy unspeakable and full of glory:
Joy is evident not matter what is happening to you
Paul & Silas in the prison
John on Patmos
Daniel in the Lion’s den
Hebrew boys in the furnace
Joy is not dependent upon circumstance
Even if circumstances fail us, we can, and should always rejoice in our salvation
The mark of someone that is living a holy life will be seen when they come into service on a hard day
worship even if life says there’s nothing worth praising for
Joy is one of our weapons against the dissuasion of the enemy
Why does James tell us to count trials as “pure joy?”
What good does it do us to rejoice in the things that are going wrong?
If I can throw my opinion in here, I think sometimes we don’t get victory over circumstances because we don’t praise in the middle of them.
Peace
The HS also gives us peace
This is something that our minds can’t comprehend
This peace should not be affected by what is happening around us.
Peace shouldn’t just be something that we feel inside, it should be something that we show to others
