What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus?
It means more than just going to church.
It means more than just reading your Bible.
It means more than praying.
To be a disciple of Jesus means that we are to follow Jesus!
In tonight’s passage, we are going to see Jesus call the twelve disciples that we have names for.
As we read this calling passage, we will see what disciples do.
Who they are.
Disciples Are Desired By Jesus
Don’t miss that first part of this passage.
Jesus is drawing together His community.
And who does He bring to Himself?
Who does He call?
Those that He desires.
Now, as we look at different truths about these original apostles, we won’t be exactly like them.
What’s true of them won’t exactly be what’s true of us.
But this truth holds true.
If you’re a follower of Jesus, if you are feeling the call of discipleship on your life, it is because Jesus desires for you to be one of His.
That’s nuts.
Do you ever feel undesirable?
Or is that just me?
I had a running joke in my single college boy years that I was hard to want.
I joked about that but I felt it too.
I felt that maybe I just wasn’t worth people’s affection or love.
If you are in this room in this moment on an ordinary Wednesday night in January, don’t miss what’s happening.
Jesus is calling you to follow Him as one of His disciples, and He is doing that because He cares about you.
All I can really say in response to that is wow.
Why wouldn’t I want to be His disciple?
Why wouldn’t I want to follow Him?
He has chosen me.
He desires me.
He has chosen you too.
Disciples Be With Jesus
What else do we learn about disciples?
We learn that disciples be with Jesus.
Before we talk any about what disciples do, we have to acknowledge that they are simply supposed to be with Jesus.
That is so encouraging.
So many of us in the church can feel the burden of what we are called by God to do.
Right?
We feel the pressure of reading our Bibles, praying, giving, evangelizing, and inviting others to church.
And when we don’t do it, we feel off.
We feel like God is distant.
I’m here to tell you that your Father simply wants to be with you.
He just wants to sit with you.
He just wants you to spend time with Him.
The pressure is off.
We’re going to talk about what we get to be a part of as disciples of Jesus.
But before you start to think that His love for you is based off anything you accomplish, think about this truth.
Disciples are simply with Jesus.
Before they’re sent, they simply sit.
I love kids movies.
Like a lot.
I went and saw Puss and Boots 2 on Monday and laughed my freaking face off.
It was wonderful.
There’s an old classic called Mulan.
I’m not talking about this stupid remake that took out Mushu and all the music and fun and wonder.
I’m talking the old school one.
In Mulan, she goes to war for her father’s honor.
When she arrives back home after defeating the most terrifying animated villain in Disney history, Shan-Yu, she comes with his sword and the emperor’s crest as a sign of the emperor’s gratitude.
Does anyone know what happens next?
Does anyone know what happens when she shows her father these objects?
He pushes them aside and gives her a huge hug.
I’m sorry that some of you have fathers in your life that only want what you can show for your accomplishments.
It makes my heart break for you.
Because Mulan’s father shows us what a godly father is, and what our Heavenly Father is like.
Stop bringing your earthly accomplishments.
Your stat line and GPA aren’t worth anything.
Just give Him a hug.
Stop bringing your spiritual accomplishments.
Your Sunday school attendance and quiet time success don’t matter at all.
Just give Him a hug.
Disciples of Jesus sit with Jesus.
Before anything else, they sit in His presence.
Disciples Preach Jesus
Out of the overflow of their intimate relationship with Jesus however, disciples of Jesus do two things.
First they preach Jesus, right?
Now again, there is not a direct one for one correlation between the apostles we’re reading about here in this passage and our modern walk with Jesus.
BUT.
This rings true.
We are sent out from God’s presence to preach.
If you were at the winter retreat on Saturday night, you watched me cry talking on this very point.
When we rest and reside in God’s presence, that’s not the end goal.
We are to be on mission, preaching the wonder of Jesus to the world around us.
And this is where we stop being disciples of Jesus.
Experience forgiveness?
Yes please.
Experience peace and joy?
Yes please.
Experience the felt presence of God in our rooms when we’re in the word and prayer?
Yes please.
But tell others about Him?
You must be out of your freaking mind.
And yet, our unwillingness to tell others about our Savior is sometimes directly linked to the joy or lack there of that we find in our walk with Christ.
When you are trying to keep your relationship with Jesus secret, you’re going to be miserable.
What we need to remember though is that this will happen naturally if we are truly walking with Jesus and sitting in His presence.
My sister Shannon is obsessed about two things right now.
Mia’s italian restaurant in Wichita Falls, and a dude she met and has been on a few dates with.
She has called me more in the last month to talk about that boy than she has in the year prior combined.
She talks about what fills her with life and makes her feel joy.
That’s all preaching about Jesus is.
