Harvest?

What is Paul talking about?
Karpos- Fruit
Where is the fruit coming from? Among them and among the Gentiles.
Last week we learned that Paul was coming to Encourage here we learn that he is coming to Evangelize.
What does it mean to be obligated? Word also means Indebted. What does it mean to be indebted, if they have never met so they can’t owe them anything?
What if I give you $300 to give to someone, are you then indebted to that person, or obligated to them? We have an obligation to the Gospel to spread it.
What God has given us, the Gospel, forgiveness, love, grace, eternal life we are required, obligated, indebted to give.
What is the motivation for Paul’s Obligation?
Look at Verse 5
For His Name’s Sake
- Because He is who He is, honor is demanded
For People’s Sake
-To Reach The Nations

Eager or Ashamed?

Ashamed or Offended= Same Word in Greek
How is the Gospel Offensive?
The Gospel is Free and Undeserved
People take offense, citing that they are moral and righteous
2. Jesus died for me.
This statement attacks the idea that I am innately good.
3. Salvation through Jesus Alone
We must depend on someone. This takes away our Autonomy.
4. Salvation Comes by Jesus Suffering and Serving, therefore we must suffer and serve.
This attacks our desires to be comfortable.

16-17 give us Paul’s Summary of the Gospel.

The Gospel is Power.
Not just an idea, or philosophy the Gospel is it’s own power. It doesn’t bring power or have power it is power.
5th Century Bishop Theodoret thought the Gospel was like a pepper. Looks interesting, seems to be cold. But when you experience it we find the sensation of burning fire.
The Gospel is similar. When we take it in personally we find it full of power.
This power Changes lives. This power puts your name in the Lambs book of life.
The Gospel is for Everyone who Believes
It requires nothing but faith, for anyone to receive the Power.
The Gospel is Revealing Righteousness
What does righteousness mean?
It is a positional word. To have good or right standing as in to a bank or organization. You are acceptable because your record is unblemished. But, we are all blemished.
Righteousness of God is revealed- passively no effort required on our part. From Faith, for faith, in other words when we are faithful God reveals more to us. We live by faith because when we are faithful, He is faithful to reveal more of Himself. Therefore our whole lives are consumed in Him!
The Gospel is not...
Sinning- each sin and problem is a rejection of the Gospel.
The Gospel will always cause offense because it reveals our need that we cannot meet on our own.
What good has happened this past week?
What bad has happened in the last week?
How does knowing we are obligated to share the Gospel change the way you think about Evangelism?
In what situations do you, or your peers, find yourself being ashamed of the Gospel?
What is your position? Are you being led by the spirit to a position of righteousness or are you rejecting the Gospel?
How can we pray for you this week?
Pray with your group.
