Introduction

SCRIPTURE: “For all who RELY on works of the law are under a CURSE; for it is written, ‘Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.’ Christ REDEEMED us from the CURSE of the law by becoming a curse for us---for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree’---so that IN CHRIST Jesus the BLESSING of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might RECEIVE the promised Spirit through FAITH.”
STORY:Les miserables story of Valjean and Bienvenu
PROPOSITION: Jesus became a curse IN MY PLACE to give me SALVATION through faith.
INTERROGATIVE:
TRANSITION:

Point 1: INSUFFICIENT Funds

Have you ever went to buy something and you didnt have the money for it? That’s one of the most humiliating feelings. (Find video of a truck carrying more load than it can handle and show the clip) Have you ever felt like you’re carrying more than you can handle? Well Paul is saying that you cannot carry the burden of perfection on your own shoulders through the keeping of the law because you weren’t built for that. Your good works through keeping the law might get you 100 feet down the road but at some point that truck breaks down. At some point you come to the realization that without faith in Jesus the perfect one, God’s own Son, then you stand guilty in your sin.
The law cannot COMMEND you to God but it can only CONDEMN you.
Working for your salvation cannot pay back the penalty of your disobedience. Paul is pretty straightforward in the way he explains this. He even quotes Habakkuk 2:4. Habakkuk was complaining to God of the sinfulness of the Israelites and he couldn’t watch it anymore. God told him that another group of people the Chaldeans were going to come in and defeat the Israelites because of their disobedience. And God tells Habakkuk that “the righteous shall live by FAITH”. Those that loved God and wanted to live a life pleasing to him were going to have to RELY on him. The law will condemn you in your own disobedience but relying on God and His faithfulness will produce righteousness in your life.
The Law COMMANDS perfection but can’t CARRY your soul to salvation.
The curse of sin and shame becomes evident THROUGH the law. The law makes us aware of the CONDITION we are in. The HELPLESSNESS that we realize when we look at the demands of the law and our ability to fulfill what is expected should drive us to one place…and that’s to the FOOT of the CROSS. God knew we wouldn’t be able to complete the law in it’s fullness. God knew no man with a depraved mind, darkened heart, and bent towards doing evil would do the law perfectly. God desires the realization of wrong to drive us to TRUSTING Him.

Point 2: Christ PAID IT ALL

Jesus became what we WERE so that we might become what He IS.
Righteous living is reliant living.
God doesn’t want MAKE BELIEVE.
Don’t PERFORM for God but POSITION yourself in a POSTURE of faith.

APPLICATION:

Ask yourself these questions this week:
What am I holding onto that I need to release to God?
Am I performing for God when I need to be praying to God?
What is my posture before God?
Do I desire to spend time with God?
