The Inclusive Gospel.

One of the big complaints against Christianity is that it is exclusive. That Jesus is the only way and that is very true. But what they miss is that the way is open to everybody that will accept Jesus as saviour.
In this passage we will see the inclusive gospel.

#103 Jesus sends a demon out of a girl.

At the beginning of this chapter, Jesus had been confronted by the religious leaders for not following in their traditions. The traditions had become more authoritative to them than the actual commands of God.
Mark 7:13 KJV
13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.
Mark 7:15 KJV
15 There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.
Mark 7:20 KJV
20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
Mark 7:21 KJV
21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
Mark 7:22 KJV
22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
Mark 7:23 KJV
23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
Jews were very exclusive. They would not go near anything that would make them unclean from the outside.
They were not concerned at all with what was inside, they only cared about what was inside. You can hide what is on the inside but everybody can see what is on the outside.
So there are many people that the Jews would exclude.
This woman in this story is just such a person. Without Jesus, she would not of had any chance.
We are not told why Jesus left Galilee. It may have been to get away form the crowds, or the persecution from the religious leaders. Maybe to have some time alone with the disciples for instruction. It is estimated that this trip could have taken around 8 months.
Mark 7:24 KJV
24 And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid.
Jesus went out side the traditional borders of Israel. ( Should not call it Palestine as that indicates the land that belongs to Palestinians).
There were many judgments pronounced against Tyre and Sidon because of their contentions toward Israel.

I. The first Exclusion, she was female.

Mark 7:25 KJV
25 For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet:

II. The second exclusion, she was a gentile.

Mark 7:26 KJV
26 The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.

III. The third exclusion, she was not just a gentile but Canaanite.

Matthew 15:22 KJV
22 And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.
She knew that Messiah would come from the line of David. She also calls Him Lord.
We see that Jesus ignored her. He was not not being cruel, He was teaching the disciples.
Matthew 15:23 KJV
23 But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.
They would have excluded her just like the religious leaders.
Matthew 15:24 KJV
24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
This goes all the way back to the Abrahamic Covenant.
The Jews were chosen to be the messengers of the Gospel. It was though them that Jesus would come. Unfortunately, the Jews thought that Gospel was only for them and that being Jewish was all that was required. But that is not what God intended.
The nations were turn to Israel to receive the Gospel. Unfortunately, the Jews themselves rejected the Gospel themselves.
Romans 1:16 KJV
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
many OT passages about the gospel going to the nations.
This women would not accept no as an answer. Her request was going to be heard and accepted.
Matthew 15:25 KJV
25 Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.
She came to the Lord in total submission and humility. She was going to go as far as she had to go to get her daughter some help.
That is how we should approach the the Lord. We should approach Jesus in total submission and humility.
Mark 7:27 KJV
27 But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.
This seems cruel but Jesus is teaching. He is facilitating. He is not debating with the woman. He is steering the conversation in the direction he wants it to go to make His point.
Mark 7:28 KJV
28 And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children’s crumbs.
She is not wanting to take anything away from anybody, she just wants some of the leftovers.
Mark 7:29 KJV
29 And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter.
Matthew 15:28 KJV
28 Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.
We have to come to the Lord in faith. She believed that Jesus could heal her daughter. She knew that jesus was her only hope. Jesus is our only hope today.
Mark 7:30 KJV
30 And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.
This was the second time Jesus healed from a distance. The other was the Roman centurions servant. Both of these cases were for gentiles.

#104 Jesus heals many people.

IV. The fourth exclusion physical deformity.

Physical deformity or illness was considered judgment from God for some past sin.
Mark 7:31 KJV
31 And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.
Matthew 15:29 KJV
29 And Jesus departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there.
Matthew 15:30 KJV
30 And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus’ feet; and he healed them:
Mark 7:32 KJV
32 And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.
Mark 7:33 KJV
33 And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue;
Mark 7:34 KJV
34 And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.
Mark 7:35 KJV
35 And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.
This is fulfilling Messianic prophecies.
Isaiah 35:5–6 KJV
5 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. 6 Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.
Mark 7:36 KJV
36 And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it;
Notice that when jesus tells people to keep quiet, they go and tell everybody. He tells us to go and tell everybody and we don’t tell anybody.
They are blessed with physical healing and tell everybody.
We are blessed with eternal life and will not tell anybody.
This is for physical healing, How much more should we be willing to tell about Jesus giving us the free gift of eternal life!
Mark 7:37 KJV
37 And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.
Hearkens back to the creation account:
Genesis 1:31 KJV
31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
God’s creation was very good. Man defiled that creation through sin (disobedience to God). Jesus through His atoning work all the cross will restore God’s creation back to that very good state.
Matthew 15:31 KJV
31 Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.
Again this hearkens back to Isaiah 35:5-6.

Application:

Like the woman we should all come to Jesus in total submission and humility.
We should come to Him in total faith actually putting our faith in action.
James 2:17–18 KJV
17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
We should remember that the Gospel is inclusive.
John 3:16 KJV
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Jesus did not and does not exclude anybody and neither should we. (what about fallen christians).
# 105. Jesus feeds four thousand. Mark 8:1-10; Matthew 15:32-39.
