o Intro: 10 days, Linger, Andrae/CONGRATS DEBBIE SANCHEZ (FAITHFUL)
2023 Theme: Faithful

1 Corinthians 4:1–2 (ESV)

1 This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.

2 Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.

· Erroneous thinking/faction-minded/Set straight/ “Found faithful.”
Steward: manager, supervisor, caretaker
o New Series: Entrusted
· This morning, we’re kicking off a new series called “Entrusted.”
o “Permanent Loan”
Application: nothing is ever truly ours/Families, jobs, callings/Mindset does not diminish our effectiveness; enhances it/“Earthen vessels” in 1 Cor. 4:6-7: affects how we wobble through life.
“carrying cases” for the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 4:6-7).
·“entrusted” means, “To commit to another with confidence.”
· Few examples better than Joseph.
 If you have your Bibles this morning, turn with me to Genesis 36.

Genesis 39:1-6 (NASB 2020)

1 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an Egyptian officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the bodyguard, bought him from the Ishmaelites, who had taken him down there.

2 And the Lord was with Joseph, so he became a successful man. And he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian.

3 Now his master saw that the Lord was with him and thatthe Lord made all that he did prosper in his hand.

4 So Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal servant; and he made him overseer over his house, and put him in charge of all that he owned.

5 It came about that from the time he made him overseer in his house and over all that he owned, the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house on account of Joseph; so the Lord’s blessing was upon all that he owned, in the house and in the field.

6 So he left Joseph in charge of everything that he owned; and with him there he did not concern himself with anything except the food which he ate. [1]

o Recap of Joseph’s Trials: Dream, favored, hated, pit, tore tunic, picnic
Saw caravan of Ishmaelites
· Here’s where we’ll pick up this morning.

1 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an Egyptian officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the bodyguard, bought him from the Ishmaelites, who had taken him down there.

·chose another perspective/rather than resentment...
- Rather than getting bitter or resentful towards God, demanding answers for why his dreams weren’t coming to pass, he chose tenacious faith.
 This brings me to our first point.

1. Trust God with the season you’ve been entrusted. (39:1)

o Joseph’s Trust in God/How do you handle this season? (dead-end job, still single, trial upon trial)
o The Best Father in the World
Application
church facilities team, i didn’t have same perspective/African brother distracted by affection/even in messy, unglamorous seasons, opportunities for worship/Faithful now in messy season prepares us for greater
-Joseph not slave forever/His faithfulness caught God’s attn.
o Quiet Quitting Vs. Fervent Faithfulness[2]
“people who do the minimum required and are psychologically detached from their job.”/half of the US job force./toxic workplaces/Jo is light in dark world/Fervent Faithfulness/Trust the Process

1 Peter 5:6—"Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you.”

- It’s apparent to everyone around us God when places His hand on us.

2. Your Faithfulness Precedes You. (39:2-3)

o Potiphar/“devoted to the sun,” which was worshipped locally in Egypt in the Heliopolis in the Delta.
- Potiphar was the “captain of the bodyguard.”/Pharaoh’s “secret service.”/Powerful & wealthy/ taking notice of Joseph.
 Look at verses 2 and 3.

2 And the Lord was with Joseph, so he became a successful man. And he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian.

3 Now his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made all that he did prosper in his hand.

· Generally, slaves faded into the background/Not Joseph/Favor b/c GOD with him/Potiphar noticed
o Blessed[3]
·“I think it just means things just work out…Things just work out miraculously like Someone is planning it.”
-Dumpster Diving
“Isn’t it amazing that the things we were so preoccupied with last week are now in the dumpster and in our rearview mirror?”
Application: God is “making all we do prosper in our hand.”/Someone who doesn’t know why sees you and sees favor/I know this family: successful business, late nights praying for CEOs and bank presidents
- Your faithfulness is going before you.
 The last thing is this…

3. Faithfulness understands that stewardship is not ownership.

Genesis 39:4-6a (NASB 2020)

4So Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal servant; and he made him overseer over his house, and put him in charge of all that he owned.

5It came about that from the time he made him overseer in his house and over all that he owned, the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s house on account of Joseph; so the LORD’S blessing was upon all that he owned, in the house and in the field.

6So he left Joseph in charge of everything that he owned; and with him there he did not concern himself with anything except the food which he ate.

o RECAP, b/c fascinating: God gives ruling dream, becomes slave, bought by one of Egypt’s most powerful/Now QUIET QUITTER, FERVENTLY FAITHFUL victor/Works out/
Potiphar promotes faithfulness, Jo thrives b/c of faithfulness/God uses him b/c of faithfulness/Spill OVER
o Stewardship: Potiphar trusted him w/ wealth: “Did no concern himself w/ anything except the food he ate.”/Not for Potiphar, God; stewardship is the one with nothing managing the possessions of the one who owns everything./Gen 1 Adam/Not our church, His. Not our lives, His/
o Your Wife, but MY Daughter/Eph. 4: Exasperation is not bad dad jokes; making them feel they can do no right.
Application: not building our empires, HIS Kingdom/Workplaces should feel different when we’re around
- “I don’t know what it is about Andre,”and “Put them through to Holly. She has a way with people.”
- “Bring Matt in here. This is a big crisis for our company, and I don’t know what to do, but I trust Matt.”
- “Send Andrew to that house. Our customers like him and he puts our company in a positive light.”
 Let’s stand together.
Response:
· As stewards, are we stewarding with faithfulness our interactions with one another?Word? Culture? Gifts? He will require it back.
· Pray to be faithful to steward what He is entrusting to us in 2023.
hold lightly the weightiness you’ve been entrusted.
o The Crown[4]
Tower of London/viewed but touched by three people: the monarch, Archbishop of Canterbury, and the Crown Jeweler/couldn’t sell it or use personally
you’re stewarding something belonging to a King.
Pray.
