🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢

Recap:

1 PETER—HOPE during trials, LIVING as one SET APART/EXILE & SOJOURNER
Last week: SUFFERING of CHRIST & NOAH’S EXAMPLE
SUFFERING on the PATH to GLORY for CHRIST
NOAH’S SALVATION on DAY of JUDGMENT
**We can be CONFIDENT that in the MIDST of the SUFFERING we go through in life that IF we are IN CHRIST... we are ON the ROAD to GLORY...and that ON the DAY of JUDGMENT we will be SAVED.
This KNOWLEDGE should HELP US PERSEVERE during trials.
Read Text & Pray (1 Pet. 4:1-6)
🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢

Intro:

STRUGGLE w/ TIME?...NOT ENOUGH time in day, week, month??.....
Me too.
You have enough time to do the will of God for your life! (Maybe not all the extra stuff though)
JESUS’ LIFE DEVOTED to FATHER’S WILL, he’s our EXAMPLE!

Need:

We need to PRIORITIZE GOD’S WILL over our own desires & HAVE GRIT…FOLLOWING HIM REGARDLESS of WHAT COMES...
Devoting our lives to Christ’s kingdom work!
Overall trajectory of our lives…
🐢🐢🐢.....31 minutes left....🐢🐢🐢Text:
1 Peter 4:1–6 (ESV)
Thought 1: Ceasing from Sin
1 Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,
2 so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God.
“SINCE/THEREFORE” FOLLOWING LAST WK. on CHRIST’S SUFFERINGS....
ARM YOURSELF w/ MIND of CHRIST...
“arm yourself” (hapax) and it has the sense of military preparation, to get ready by equipping, to equip or arm yourself (BDAG).
**MENTALLY PREPARING ourselves TO SUFFER.
CHRIST’S MENTALITY: “Not my will, but yours be done
Tom Schreiner: “The martial language indicates that discipline and grit are needed to live the Christian life, particularly in view of the suffering believers encounter.
PREPARATION…DAY AFTER someone BREAKS IN not best day to buy gun...
Mentality: “I’d rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.”....
HAVE GRIT, mental FORTITUDE & RESOLVE…whether it’s needed or not!
🐢🐢🐢🐢
RESULT of SUFFERING in FLESH: CEASING from SIN!
RUN TO GOD, not sin, during trials!
(Q) You ever treat yourself when having a bad day?
Milkshake, specialty coffee, eggnog, etc…?
This is fine…but we DON’T TREAT ourselves TO SIN & we should GO to GOD FIRST!
CEASING with SIN = through with it!
NOT sinless PERFECTION (I wish)
I’d take being slandered, ostracized, or even beat up if it would permanently fix battle w/ temptation! SIGN ME UP!
Instead: when you CHOOSE to SUFFER specifically BECAUSE you’re a CHRISTIAN....RATHER than SINNING to GET OUT of IT....DISPLAYS that SIN’S POWER is BROKEN in your LIFE!
How many of us when we were kids would lie at times to get out of trouble?
How many of you still do this? (kidding)
TRUTH is EASY WHEN there’s NO CONSEQUENCES!....same way, easy to be Christian on good days when there aren’t consequences
BAD DAYS are NO EXCUSE for SIN or rejecting Christ.
🐢🐢
(V2) Then, PETER says to SPEND REST of our DAYS in PURSUIT of GOD’S WILL!
Human (fleshly) passions/desires & God’s will are opposed!
DOUBLE LIVES DON’T EXIST.... If there’s double, it’s a life sold out to sin.
Human desires:
“An inordinate self-indulgent craving (that displaces proper affections for God)” (LOGOS).
NOT FIRST TIME in PETER:
Don’t be conformed to passions/lusts/desires of former ignorance (1:15)
Desires wage war against our souls! (2:11)
CAIN- “SIN is crouching at YOUR DOOR, its desire is contrary to you, you must rule over it!” (Gen. 4:7)
🐢🐢🐢🐢
Peter: SPEND REST of TIME in FLESH (body) in PURSUIT of GOD’S WILL.
DAYS = NUMBERED:
Christ is coming again
If he tarries, we’ll die.
Transition: Now, after introducing this idea of ceasing from sin and turning from human passions towards the will of God, Peter is going to dive deeper into how believers should look different from the rest of the world in their lifestyle.
🐢🐢🐢.....20 minutes left....🐢🐢🐢
Thought 2: The Believer’s Different Lifestyle
3 For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry.
4 With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you;
5 but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
What the GENTILES (nonbelievers) WANT to do (v3): CONTRASTS WILL of GOD (v2)
Your PAST SUFFICES for a LIFESTYLE of SIN!— ALL of us HAVE a PAST, because NO ONE was BORN SAVED.
YOU MUST BE BORN-AGAIN.
🐢🐢🐢🐢
NOT ALL lived the SAME GODLESS LIFESTYLE, but ALL NEED SAVED...
NO MATTER AGE, your PAST is SUFFICIENT for SIN.
🐢🐢🐢🐢
YOUNG PEOPLE: Your PAST is SUFFICIENT for SIN…you DON’T NEED to enjoy a GODLESS LIFESTYLE, party it up, whatever this looks like...
NO ONE NEEDS more sin to GET THEIR FILL!
**You aren’t missing out. Sin’s pleasure is for a season, then comes regret.
🐢🐢🐢🐢
Everyone: DON’T LONG for the THINGS you USED to DO, they’re gone!
Peter’s vice list: (not exhaustive)
Sensuality
No self-restraint, complete self-abandonment
Passions (lusts/desires)
Drunkenness/ debauchery
Orgies/drinking parties, w/ immoral behavior
drinking parties
lawless idolatry (typical of pagans)
**List boils down to ILLICIT PARTY LIFESTYLE... filled w/ DRINKING & NO SELF-CONTROL!
SPECIFIC SINS AREN’T the POINT...., the PRINCIPLE is that the UNRESTRAINED, SINFUL LIFESTYLE is B.C.!
WHATEVER SIN looked like in your life, the PAST is SUFFICIENT.
🐢🐢🐢🐢
(V4) They’re SURPRISED you DON’T JOIN, literally…don’t run with them.
Wayne Grudem: People outside of Christ running in search of things to fill them that are empty…unrestrained sinful lifestyle is empty, not fun!
WHEN you’re SAVED, GOD does a WORK that you should have a NEW STANDARD…EXILES & SOJOURNERS, DON’T FIT IN!
Is there anyone here today that when you got saved you had to change your friend group some??
**When you have a GREATER LOVE = GIVE THINGS UP.
LOVE for SAVIOR- OVERPOWERS.... LOVE for SIN, OLD LIFE, & even WORLDLY FRIENDS....
SOME people STRUGGLE so bad in their FAITH BECAUSE all their FRIENDS are PAGAN & they don’t start fresh!
You might be SLANDERED/maligned when you DON’T do things to FIT IN.
Young people: IF your FRIENDS MAKE FUN of you BECAUSE of your FAITH, or because YOU AREN’T WILLING to DO some of the STUFF they do…GET NEW FRIENDS.
FRIENDS who DON’T RESPECT your VALUES & beliefs AREN’T WORTH IT.
🐢🐢🐢🐢
DESIRE to do GOD’S WILL ABOVE ALL else.
ALL MUST ANSWER: “Would I rather do God’s will & suffer, be slandered or ostracized...or sin to fit in so I don’t have to worry about it??
SOME DAY you might have to ANSWER w/ ACTIONS.
EX.: CHOOSING your HARD…physical pain of exercise, or pain of bad health?
For me: SPICY food or HEARTBURN?.... “I often choose heartburn”
You can CHOOSE to FOLLOW GOD, or FIT IN W/ the WORLD... You can’t have both!
🐢🐢🐢🐢
(v5) THOSE who MALIGN us MUST GIVE ACCOUNT!
If we are slandered because we don’t participate....remember GOD’S OPINION MATTERS, not theirs!
ALL GIVE ACCOUNT:- living w/ HEALTHY FEAR of GOD.
OTHERS will have to GIVE ACCOUNT for how they TREATED US…we will be vindicated!
Christ’s sufferings - road to glory…Noah’s suffering—vindication & salvation.
Our suffering & the opinions of others won’t matter on the day we stand before God and he says, “Well done my good and faithful servant”
Transition: And now after sharing about how people will have to give an account, Peter concludes by sharing about judgment.
🐢🐢🐢.....9 minutes left....🐢🐢🐢
Thought 3: The Judgment
6 For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.
ALL must GIVE an ACCOUNT to God, no exceptions whatsoever!
Peter explains, GOSPEL was PREACHED to those NOW DEAD…they HAD to FACE DEATH but EXPERIENCE LIFE w/ GOD in Spirit.
NONBELIEVERS claimed BELIEVING was USELESS, b.c. BELIEVERS STILL DIED.…FORGETTING FUTURE RESURRECTION & intermediate state!
****NOT a DOCTRINE where some got a SECOND CHANCE...
🐢🐢🐢🐢

Gospel:

THE DAY you DIE, the CASE is CLOSED... You have NO MORE OPPORTUNITY to believe.
**RICH MAN & LAZARUS.
CHRIST SUFFERED FOR YOU, PUT your FAITH IN HIM today!

Big Idea:

And so we learn from this text today that suffering as a Christian shouldn’t push us towards an ungodly lifestyle or away from Christ, but instead should cause us to pursue the will of God and fellowship with Him more fervently.

Intention:

And our worship response to God should be drawing closer to God during times of suffering and separating ourselves from the rest of the world in our lifestyle.
For both the believer and nonbeliever must give an account for the life that they lived, and the sinful desires and activities that characterize nonbelievers should no longer characterize those who are in Christ!
🐢🐢🐢🐢
CROSS
In SUFFERING, CHRIST DREW CLOSER to the FATHER.
KNOWING it was the LAST SUPPER, he SPENT TIME W/ DISCIPLES...teaching them… (JN. 13-17 = LAST NIGHT)
Also, SPENT NIGHT in PRAYER…not fulfilling unmet desires!!
(Q) If you knew with 100% guarantee that you were going to die tomorrow, how would you live your last day?
This would say a lot about you...
We all must LIVE with KNOWLEDGE of the END.........NOT using this w/ YOLO mentality but living for Christ.
🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢

Takeaways

ARM OURSELVES w/ MIND of CHRIST...PREPARE OURSELVES for SUFFERING before it comes.
RESOLVE & GRIT…not my will but yours be done.
DESIRES of FLESH/what Gentiles want to do, OPPOSED to WILL of GOD.
Believers COMMITTED to DOING WILL of GOD, REST of DAYS on earth.
Following Jesus Christ, might not fit in, might be slandered, etc.
They will GIVE an ACCOUNT & so will we.

Application

Nonbelievers: Faith first!
For believers: Looking at Peter’s vice list…maybe it wasn’t you, maybe it was....
Make your own vice list (mental or actual) of WHO you USED TO BE…
CELEBRATE the WORK GOD’S DONE in your life!
Close in prayer

Communion.

1 Corinthians 11:23–28 ESV
23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. 27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
** Check hearts…Right w/ God....
** Communion is only for believers who’ve been saved.
Celebrating & remembering what Christ did for us at Calvary....
