How do you personally discern right from wrong? In a world that feeds on lies, it can be hard to find the truth. Many people go and are like people who lose something, and they cannot find it, but find it, and it was in such an easy place. Sometimes I have lost something only to find it was in my coat or pants pocket.
John has been writing to this church and have been giving warnings about false teachers, and the world and flesh and the devil. Remember, there is a heresy called gnosticism which has been promoted to the church. This is where they said that Jesus could not have come in the flesh, as they viewed material as evil, and immaterial as good. They also emphasized knowledge over love and morals. So John is writing to these people as they are under attack to encourage them and help them in their walk. He also has been methodically debunking what the wrong people have said. So now, he is telling them to stand fast in the truth and continue in the faith. I mentioned this before, but if people could pick and choose what is true in the Bible, then none of it can be true. Or let’s take a passage of Scripture and we study it, and we ask a couple people, what does it mean to you. What will happen is that there will be alot of confusion because people are basing it on their feeling and their perspective rather than the word of God. John is writing to them and letting them know, that in order to continue they need to hold fast to truth.
How does truth help you continue?
What do you need to abide in? v. 24
That which is from the beginning, the message they first heard
What is that? The gospel
1 Corinthians 15:1-4 “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”
2 john 7 “For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.”
Now while we might not doubt Jesus coming in the flesh, we might doubt that God loves us, or we have to earn God’s love or that we cannot be loved.
john 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Romans 5:8 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Galatians 2:20 “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” How do you hold fast to it?
This lie is from the very pit of hell!
Other of us might take the other approach and say since Christ died I can live in sin
2 corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
Titus 2:11-13 “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;”
titus 3:2-7 “To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men. For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
How do you stay abiding in the truth?
the Holy Spirit is what teaches us
john 14:26 “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”
1 Corinthians 2: 9-10 “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.”
It says that we do not need teachers, it seems like a contradiction
ephesians 4:11 “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;”
James 3:1 “My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.”
now a chord in music is when 3 notes are play together harmonically. If I play a chord on my guitar and it is not tuned, it does not sound good. if someone was to play a dissonant chord.
You do not need to be a piano player to know when something is off, so it sounds natural. So when false teaching that is against the gospel is being preached or taught you should be able to dismiss it as false, because of the Holy Spirit inside of you
It is my prayer for all of you, to continue serving the Lord, and make an impact for the cause of Christ, but if you are not abiding in the truth, it will impact how you will serve the Lord.
