Luke 2:39-52
Misplacing the Messiah
Introduction
These verses tell us all we know about Christ between His birth and the beginning of His earthly ministry at the age of 30
False scriptures and historical books give information that is not to be trusted.
But, these verses tell us vast information about Jesus’ character, essence, and purpose
Here are four aspects of Christ’s childhood that tell us who He is!
The Maturing Messiah
40 And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
Wiersbe: In His incarnation, the Son of God set aside the independent use of His own divine attributes and submitted Himself wholly to the Father (Phil. 2:1–11). There are deep mysteries here that no one can fully understand or explain, but we have no problem accepting them by faith.
Some spurious false gospels give tales of Jesus doing random miraculous things, but these are false gospels.
His first miracle, the turning water into wine: John 2:11 This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.
The Missing Messiah
Verses 43-49
The misplaced Him; He wasn’t disrespectful
They misunderstood Him; He was deity
“Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?””
…they did not understand the statement that He spoke to them.”
They knew who He was, they knew what He came to do, therefore, they should have guest where He was.
In a way, they did not believe in Him
They “did not understand”
His own brothers did not believe in Him
John 7:5 For even His brothers did not believe in Him
Young people, would your parents know where to look for you if you were missing.
What reputation do you have, what do people know about you?
Do you have a name of loving God and the things of God, of obedience to your parents, of a desire to do right?
Do they say of you, “Well, they love God, so they are somewhere they are supposed to be, doing the things they are supposed to do.
Are you about your Father’s business?
Adults, how about you?
The Mandate Messiah
Luke 2:21 And when eight days were completed for the circumcision of the Child, His name was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb. 22 Now when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”), 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, “A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”
Luke 2:27 …And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law,
39 So when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord…
41 His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast. 43 When they had finished the days…
51 Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them…
Matthew 3:15 But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.
Matthew 5:17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. Matthew 5:18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 19 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.
Galatians 4:3 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world. 4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
Jesus did not fulfill the Law to mark off some check list, but because He was righteous. An unblemished sacrifice for sin.
We do not put enough emphasis on the sinless life of Christ, but it was necessary for the remission our sins and the imputation of His righteousness to us!
The Almighty Messiah
Luke 2:49 And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?”
He is Emmanuel, meaning God with us.
He is Jesus, meaning Yahweh is salvation
God incarnate, meaning God in human flesh.
The bible clearly declares that God is one, and yet three persons. We call this The Trinity.
Conclusion
2 Corinthians 5:21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
