I. IN CHRIST, THE GOOD SHEPHERD, WE ARE NOURISHED

THE BLESSING OF SPIRITUAL NOURISHMENT

Psalm 23:2 ESV
He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.
Further, sheep will not drink from a rushing stream. Nor will they instinctively seek out clean water—they are prone to drinking whatever is nearby. Therefore, a good shepherd leads his sheep to calm, clean water. As a good shepherd, the Lord guided David to green pasture; that is, He provided well for David, giving him abundance, rest, and peace. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, provides all of this care for His followers. He gives us rest (Matthew 11:28), abundance (Matthew 6:33; John 10:10; Ephesians 1:3; Philippians 4:19), and peace (John 14:27).
IN CHRIST WE ARE NOURISHED
Matthew 11:28 ESV
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
John 6:35 ESV
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

II. IN CHRIST, THE GOOD SHEPHERD, WE ARE RESTORED

o IN CHRIST WE ARE RESTORED
Psalm 23:3 (ESV)
He restores my soul.
Here the spiritual lesson is clear: the Lord provides forgiveness and peace for those who follow Him.[1]

III. IN CHRIST, THE GOOD SHEPHERD, WE ARE BEING LED

o IN CHRIST WE ARE LED
Psalm 23:3 (ESV)
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
Matthew 6:13 ESV
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

IV. IN CHRIST, THE GOOD SHEPHERD, WE ARE PROTECTED

o IN CHRIST WE ARE PROTECTED
Psalm 23:4 ESV
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
· THE LORD’S LEADING WILL OFTEN INVOLVE MOMENTS AND PATHS THAT ARE TRYING AND DIFFICULT
o JESUS WAS LED BY THE SPIRIT INTO THE WILDERNESS TO BE TEMPTED
o PAUL’S THORNS
· THIS TRUTH LEADS TO THE COMFORT: I WILL FEAR NO EVIL BECAUSE…SINCE THE LORD LED HIM THERE
o HE IS WITH HIM (SHEPHERDS NEVER LEAVE)
o HIS ROD AND STAFF COMFORT (THE SHEPERD WILL BEAT BACK THE ENEMY: THE HIRLING; TAKE HIS BLOWS AND BITES AND STING

“if I go through the darkness that is like death” or “if I go through darkness where there is no life.”

The word translated evil means here danger, harm, injury.

The rod was a club used to drive away wild animals; the staff was a long stick used for support in walking.

V. IN CHRIST, THE GOOD SHEPHERD, WE ARE FULL (PROVISION)

o IN CHRIST WE ARE FULL
Psalm 23:5 ESV
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

an Old Testament equivalent of Romans 8:31–39 or 2 Corinthians 12:9f.; a witness to infinite resources in the worst of situations. But since the enemy is never taken lightly in Scripture, except by a Ben-hadad or a Belshazzar, it more probably anticipates a victory celebration, where the enemies are present as captives; or an accession feast with defeated rivals as reluctant guests.

PAUL WITH THE THORN IN THE FLESH
2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

VI. IN CHRIST, THE GOOD SHEPHERD, WE ARE VICTORIOUS

Psalm 23:6 ESV
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
o IN CHRIST WE ARE VICTORIOUS
§ DAVID: I SHALL
§ CHRISTIANS: WE DO NOW DWELL: NOW AND NOT YET
