Psalm 1 / Matthew 2:13–23
Matthew 1:23 ESV
23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).

He is Israel

out of Egypt / Exodus (THE story of salvation) = Jesus is True Israel
Isaiah 63:7-9 “7 I will recount the steadfast love of the Lord, the praises of the Lord, according to all that the Lord has granted us, and the great goodness to the house of Israel that he has granted them according to his compassion, according to the abundance of his steadfast love. 8 For he said, “Surely they are my people, children who will not deal falsely.” And he became their Savior. 9 In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them; in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.”
Israel was chosen; called out by God. Messiah, or Christ, means the anointed one.
Matthew 17:5 ESV
5 He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”
He IS THE chosen one
Israel was called to be God’s representative people on Earth; to be holy, to be obedient.
Matthew 4:1 ESV
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
Matthew 4:10 ESV
10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’ ”
Matthew 4:17 ESV
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Jesus was perfectly obedient; He kept Himself completely holy unto God.
Jesus was perfect righteousness because we needed Him to be

With us, to be with us

brothers
Hebrews 2:10–11 ESV
10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers,
Christ Jesus was made to suffer in the flesh
He suffered a humble birth
He suffered life and physicality
He suffered insults by many
He suffered rejection by most
He suffered mocking
He suffered being ostracized; outcast; denied and rejected by His people
He suffered loss both physically and relationally
He suffered Loving and not being loved in return, often hated
He suffered being misunderstood, unseen and unheard while trying to help those who were blinded to who He truly is and what He was doing
He suffered betrayal by a friend
He suffered false accusation; false conviction
He suffered physical abuse
He suffered the literal pains of death
Hebrews 4:15 ESV
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
In suffering, the perfect one became our perfect savior and friend
2. King Jesus is not ashamed to claim us, all who are in Christ!
Hebrews 2:16 ESV
16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham.
Before the Throne of God Above:
When Satan tempts me to despair And tells me of the guilt within Upward I look, and see Him there (One Jesus Christ, Holy Savior) who made an end to all my sin
Embracing Accusation
Could the father of lies be telling the truth Of God to me tonight? If the penalty of sin is death, then death is mine
I hear him saying, "Cursed are the ones who can't abide" He's right, Hallelujah, he's right
In Grace. In Love, Christ Jesus, the spotless lamb, the suffering one, raises His head and Voice and calls us His own; calls us family; calls us friends; calls us Brother and Sister.

Jesus is able!

Hebrews 7:25 ESV
25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.
Victory in being born
Victory over Herod’s infanticide
Victory over temptation
Victory in Crucifixion
Victory from the tomb
Take heart! Look for comfort, aid, strength, and rescue in Christ Jesus. He is Emmanuel! He is with Us! He is the one in John’s vision in Revelation 1 in the midst of the lampstands; walking among HIS CHURCHES!
Church Family, on this the first day of calendar year 2023, I want us all to ponder the surpassing excellencies of Christ Jesus! He fulfilled the righteous standards of God. He lovingly identified with and suffered for us. He is the Victorious One, so we can trust Him to be with us today, tomorrow, and forever!
Numbers 6:24–26 ESV
24 The Lord bless you and keep you; 25 the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; 26 the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
