Give him the name Jesus

Jesus=saviour=Rescuer
Angel := “he will save his people” yet..
ya-shua = God does it ~ its Hebrew form it means “the salvation of the Lord,” or “the Lord of salvation

Greek equivalent of a well-known Hebrew name. It is constructed from two Hebrew words which mean “Lord” and “save,”

Save/rescue from what?
sins
sin separates
building a lego wall boxing in a minifigure
hence exile, the glory of the Lord departing
we can’t be with him
we can’t get to him
slido: in the year that’s passed, what separated you from God?
in this new year, we still need a saviour - and the saviour has come.
“she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus”

Immanuel: God with us

he has come to us
come in person, into our situation
illustrate: sending a text vs. actually showing up for dinner
Jesus the minifigure inside our wall
enters our broken world
shows us his love
slido: in the year that’s passed, where have you known God with you?
not just a “great teacher”, “moral example”
come himself to rescue cf Ps 130:8 “He himself will redeem Israel from all their sins.”
Come to rescue - how? pouring out his blood Mt 26:28 “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”
Jesus breaks down the wall
Passover echo - blood of lamb => destroyer passes over

With you always

in this new year, the God of love still is with us - final line of this gospel
Matthew 28:20 (NIV)
And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Jesus no longer walks the earth - but he is still with us
I am not will be; I emphatic
connected to the commission - with us as we go
spoken by the risen Jesus of himself
Matthew: An Introduction and Commentary v. Jesus Alive and Sovereign (28:16–20)

The promise of God’s presence often accompanied his call to service in the Old Testament (e.g. Exod. 3:12; Josh. 1:5); it is not so much a cosy reassurance as a necessary equipment for mission

with us as we go - Calvin “do not look to your own resources” - your major resource is me
Davies “The Jesus who commands difficult obedience is at the same time the ever graceful divine presence”
Chrysostom: the apostles were not to continue till the end of the world, but He says this to the faithful as to one body
Exalting Jesus in Matthew We Will Depend on the Presence of Christ (Matthew 28:20)

Rather than being based on what we can do, this mission is based on who Jesus is and what He is able to do in and through our lives

he with us? or more we with him? as he goes about his mission, we join in
