The Greek for “terrified” (lit., “they feared a great fear”) stresses the intensity of this fear.

Matthew 17:6 CSB
When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown and were terrified.
Matthew 27:54 CSB
When the centurion and those with him, who were keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they were terrified and said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
Mark 4:41 CSB
And they were terrified and asked one another, “Who then is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!”
Fear is not something new to the modern world. The word fear is used 95 times in the new testament. 22 more times in Luke’s gospel alone. In fact it is used more in Luke than any other book in the NT. Must be a theme whouldnt you say?
Fear is also a theme in the Matthew telling of the nativity.
Matthew 2:22 (CSB)
But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being warned in a dream, he withdrew to the region of Galilee.
what do we do with fear?
The angles tell them “don’t be afraid” remember this as you read your bible. when ever someone is afraid look around more often they are shortly after told not to be afraid.
John 14:27 CSB
“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful.
2 Timothy 1:7 CSB
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.
1 John 4:18 CSB
There is no fear in love; instead, perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. So the one who fears is not complete in love.
John 16:33 CSB
I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.”

19 But Mary was treasuring up all these things in her heart and meditating on them.

Be still and know that I am God.
Philippians 4:6–7 CSB
Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Fear is defeated by resting in God’s presents. That is why He gave us the sabbath.
Fear is put to rest when we consider what God has done for us.
When Jesus brings Change God says to not be afraid of the change He brings.
