Intro

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

in those days- before Jesus’ ministry
John the baptist- a similar character of promise who prepares the way for Jesus
the kingdom of heaven- the focus of the ministry in many ways
people coming from all around to be baptized by John to show that they are repenting of their sinful lives
lawyers and teachers come to see him and he calls them vipers and tells them their lineage will not save them
one coming after to baptize with water and fire

The Baptism of Jesus

the beginning of Jesus’ ministry in Matthew
Jesus comes to be baptized to fulfill all righteousness
God speaks through his spirit and proclaims that Jesus is his son

Jesus is Tested in the Wilderness

Jesus fasts for 40 days and nights
the tempter comes with bread, power, and authority that are not in his hands but in Jesus’
Jesus fends him off simply with scripture

Jesus Begins to Preach

Jesus goes back to Galilee because John is imprisoned and begins preaching there
fulfilling scripture in Isaiah
the kingdom of heaven is near

Jesus Calls His First Disciples

Jesus calls the first four of the disciples, the fishermen by Galilee
no miracle in this instance but here Jesus simply calls and they follow
fishers of men

Jesus Heals the Sick

Jesus preaches and heals and the news about him spreads
not only in Israel but in Syria as well Matthew notes
it was not just the Jews but the whole world around him that was coming to see Jesus

Application

more fulfilling prophecy
four disciples called
recognized as the son of God
Jesus ministry begins and the world is changed
like we talked about when we went through Luke
are you having a positive affect on people’s lives that helps them see God, that makes them want to be closer to him and farther from the sin they are living in?
being fishers of men, changing lives for the better
