Title: I Am of Christ
Text: 1 Corinthians 3:1-23
Introduction: Have you ever met someone that says they are a Baptist, or a catholic, or other religion?
There are so many religions in the world, and the number goes up every day. The Bible clearly only talks about one church.
We read about division going on in the church at Corinth in 1 Corinthians 3:10 where Paul says he laid the foundation of Christ but tells them the need to be careful how they build on that foundation.
First, we will see Ye are Carnal (1 Corinthians 3:1-3).
Second, we will see Ye are God’s Husbandry (1 Corinthians 3:4-9A).
Third, we will see Ye are God’s Building (1 Corinthians 3:9B-15).
Fourth, we will see Ye are the Temple of God (1 Corinthians 3:16-20).
Finally, we will see Ye are Christ’s (1 Corinthians 3:21-23).
Thesis: The World teaches us there are many religions and we can choose which ever one we want; the Bible teaches us there is only one true religion.
I. Ye are Carnal (1 Corinthians 3:1-3).
a. Vs. 1 Paul had to speak to them as babes in Christ.
b. Vs. 2 Paul fed them milk and they were not ready for meat.
c. Vs. 3 Ye are yet carnal with:
i. Envy- Jealously- They wanted things that their brethren had. Keep up with the Joneses?? They were not content. Phil 4:11 I am Content
ii. Strife
iii. Division, walking as men.
Mat 5:21Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
Mat 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
1Jn 3:14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not hisbrother abideth in death.
1Jn 3:15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
To many times people get mad at one another in a congregation and just go to another congregation!
The Bible says if we angry with a brother shall be in danger of judgement and whosever hate his brother is a murder and has no eternal life.
We need to make things right with our breathren at all times!
II. Ye are God’s Husbandry (1 Corinthians 3:4-9A).
a. Vs. 4 Some say I am of Paul; some I am of Apollos.
b. Vs. 5-7 Both are ministers; Paul planted, and Apollos watered, but God gave increase.
c. Vs. 8-9a We are labors together with God.
App: As Christians we are nothing but farmers. Husbandry the one who takes care of the garden. We need to be planting and watering the Word of God.
Matt 28:19-20 We have been giving marching orders! Not just preacher, or elders but every Christian.
We should never put empesis on the person that baptized but give all the glory to God.
We see it all the time in world today? don’t believe me go ask someone what religion they are?
They may say: I am a Baptist. I am a Catholic, I am JW. I am a Mormon.
A lot of times when they say that who are they giving the glory to?
Some say I born a Baptist I’ll die a Baptist, don’t matter if they are wrong.
We in the church should never follow a person just because we like them or style of preaching. A lot of times a preacher will come into a work and leave and people just leave with them.
Makes u think: Were they here for God or were they here to hear him??
III. Ye are God’s Building (1 Corinthians 3:9B-15).
a. Vs. 9B Ye are Gods Building.
b. Vs. 10-11 Paul laid the foundation, which is Jesus, but they must be careful how they build on it. Matt 16:18
c. Vs. 12-13 Mans work shall be burned with fire. See all them nice cathedrals, or temples, Even Temple at Jerusalem will be burned up!
d. Why because the church is the people and not the building. A lot of people put emphasis on the building.
e. Vs. 14-15 But if Mans work abide, he shall receive reward and be saved.
App: As Christians are headquarters is in Heaven! Ask people where their church headquarters is.
Catholics is in Rome.
Baptist in Pennsylvania,
Mormons in Utah.
Ye are Gods building! Jesus is the foundation! Jesus is the Head of the body!
IV. Ye are the Temple of God (1 Corinthians 3:16-20).
a. Vs. 16 Ye are the temple of God.
b. Vs. 17 If any man destroy the temple God will destroy.
c. Vs. 18-20 Let no man deceive you, the Lord knows all thoughts.
App: Ye are Gods building! Ye are the Temple of God. What a blessing to belong to God.
The temple was a place the children of Israel got to be in the presents of God.
As Christians we will one day get to live in the presence of God!
V. Ye are Christ’s (1 Corinthians 3:21-23).
a. Vs. 21-22 All things are yours, of present and to come. Paul, Apollos, Cephas, world life. All these people belonged to other because they were all one. We are to be like minded have the mind of Christ. All to be unified.
b. Vs. 23 Ye are Christs, and Christ is God’s.
App: As Christians we are to all be unified. We all belong to Christ. And all of Christ belongs to God. God is the Husbandry.
Joh 15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
Joh 15:2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
Conclusion: We clearly see there was a lot of problems with the church in Corinth, there was division breaking out.
They were putting more emphasis on who baptized them over what they were baptized into.
We have lots of religions in the world who claim to follow Christ, but yet they do not live up to the standard of the Bible.
They are putting emphasis on the religion and not the one who laid the foundation.
We must always be careful we don’t fall into the snare of division; it is nothing new and has been going on since the 1st century church.
First, we saw Ye are Carnal.
Second, we saw Ye are God’s Husbandry.
Third, we saw Ye are God’s Building.
Fourth, we saw Ye are the Temple of God.
Finally, we saw Ye are Christ’s.
Are you of Christ? We must make sure we don’t fall in snare of following anybody but Christ! We are farmers. If we do not plant and water we are not bringing fruit, therefore will be cut off. As verse 8 says we will be given a reward according to our labor!!!
