The utter disappointment that the disciples felt leaving Jerusalem that day was based on false expectations and bad theology. As Jesus was able to correct each of those there disappointment was turned to joy.

Previous Sermon,
Resurrection Day.
This sermon,
resurrection Sunday.
Left this out,
such a good story.
sermon of its own.

The Journey

Luke 24:13–14 ESV
That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened.
Passover
large crowds
travel together
talk along way
Not going home yet
festival not half over.
Large crowds
Too many to sleep
in town
Walk back and forth from
other suburbs.
Or maybe,
just want to be home
after all that happened.
Walking along
7 miles
Not that far
Not too rough.
Maybe 3-4 hours
When they arrived
it was nearly sunset
The sun would set
around 7pm.
Probably started
around 3pm.
If this is true,
that means
they already heard
story of women at tomb.
Their mind is blinded.
Struggling with:
Faith in Jesus
Unmet Expectations
Inaccurate Theology

The Question

Luke 24:15–17 ESV
While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad.
Jesus shows up.
They don’t recognize him.
Look sad
talking sad.
Jesus asks,
what are you talking about?
NKJV says:
Luke 24:17 NKJV
And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?”
What is this sad conversation you are having?
They were sad,
it was obvious.
depression...

Depression

Two disciples
very depressed.

no hope

Depression is often
Unmet Expectations
Inaccurate Ideas
They had both.
Many today.

Marriage Counseling
Unmet expectation.
Luke 24:18 ESV
Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”
Lots of visitors
Passover Week
Jesus plays dumb
Luke 24:19 (ESV)
And he said to them, “What things?”
(When sharing the truth...
(Don’t share everything…)
(ask question…)
Jesus get them talking
They answer:
Luke 24:19–20 (ESV)
And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him.
I can’t believe
you didn’t hear
about this man.
You must be
from far away.
Next sentence
saddest words:
Luke 24:21 (ESV)
But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel.
We thought...
we hoped...
we believed...
This Jesus was
redeem Israel.
Unmet Expectations
What was there
expectation?
This Jesus
redeem Israel.
Redeem how?
overthrow Romans
conquer nations
Davidic Kingdom
World Superpower.
Their expectation???
Worldly honor.
Worldly Power.
So often,
unmet expectations
breed
disappointment
anger
resentment
Solution?
don’t expect...
People are humans
they will let you down.
They continue
Luke 24:21 ESV
But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.
The third day…???
Mentioned this last week.
Jesus had predicted:
Luke 9:22 ESV
saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.”
Jesus enemies remember:
Matthew 27:63 ESV
and said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’
Jesus disciples don’t!
Mind is clouded.
unmet expectations
Inaccurate theology.
They continue:
Luke 24:22–24 ESV
Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.”
They know stories…!!!
heard about tomb.
heard about angels
saw tomb empty...
Jesus is walking beside them!!!!!
Yet!!!
they still don’t believe.
Think about this.
Jesus could have
just revealed himself.
Conversation would
be over.
All is well.
Problem:
He need to address
underlying issue:
False Expectations
Inaccurate Theology
So Jesus answers:
Luke 24:25–26 ESV
And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”
Jesus says,
he had to die.
in order to
fulfill scripture...
To them,
this is a new thought...
never crossed their mind...
Stuck in idea.
Jesus is army leader.
Luke 24:27 ESV
And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
So Jesus unpacks
all the prophecies.
Imagine that Bible study.
Jesus unpacks
not just scripture...
Truth after truth
previously unable
to hear...
Bible hits them
as new truth!

The Invitation

Luke 24:28–29 ESV
So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them.
The pushed their invitation
They had learned much
Didn’t want it to end.
Saints...
How is your time with Jesus?
Is it sweet?
Do you long for more?
Do you seek His presence?
Desire of Ages Chapter 83—The Walk to Emmaus

Had the disciples failed to press their invitation, they would not have known that their traveling companion was the risen Lord. Christ never forces His company upon anyone. He interests Himself in those who need Him. Gladly will He enter the humblest home, and cheer the lowliest heart. But if men are too indifferent to think of the heavenly Guest, or ask Him to abide with them, He passes on. Thus many meet with great loss. They do not know Christ any more than did the disciples as He walked with them by the way.

Jesus only stays
where He is welcomed.
Let’s take time
to welcome Him.

Appearing and Disappearing

Luke 24:30–31 ESV
When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight.
Jesus says
blessing.
They recognize him.
Immediately
He disappears.

They can’t believe it!
It was Jesus

They kick themselves

Luke 24:33–35 ESV
And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.
