Recap:

2 THEMES of 1 Peter:
Enduring suffering/trials w/ living hope

LIVING as EXILES/SOJOURNERS…HONORABLY B4 NONBELIEVERS, MAIN IDEA
🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢
Read Text & Pray

🐢🐢--33 minutes left --🐢🐢

Intro:

Don’t we all want to know God’s will, what God desires of us?
Esp. in marriage…have DIFFERENCES!
CUPBOARDS..
Questions from today’s text:
How does the gospel impact our home/marriage?
How to live with a nonbelieving spouse?
🐢🐢🐢
If you’re UNMARRIED, text is STILL RELEVANT!
WOMEN- inner adornment
MEN- honor & respect women
🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢

Text:

Thought 1: The Conduct of a Christian Wife

1 Peter 3:1–7 (ESV)
1 Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, 2 when they see your respectful and pure conduct.
Household codes...STILL ACCURATE/relevant today!
NOT TEMPORARY sinful INSTITUTION - slavery
GOD’S IDEA & design.
APOSTLES WEREN’T just GOING ALONG w/ CULTURE!
If submission is thrown out, do husbands & kids follow their parts??
CHRISTIANITY = COUNTER-CULTURAL, women’s equality…
but EQUALITY in VALUE ≠≠ EQUALITY in FUNCTION/role.

🐢🐢....30 minutes left...🐢🐢

“Likewise, Be Subject”
same train of thought of submission...
wives, “EVEN IF” unbelieving husbands… (common, but not normal)
ALWAYS, “ in the Lord”
🐢🐢🐢
Subject/Subordinate= “place or arrange under.”[1] Man, woman, Christ, God, various “headships”
***NOT SAME level of AUTHORITY as PARENTS & KIDS, masters & slaves.
Story, US MOVING here…submission.
PURPOSE of SUBMISSION, “so that” come to faith.
****“EVEN IF...” - NOT the NORM
No missionary dating!!
🐢🐢🐢
Done THROUGH CONDUCT! (theme of Peter’s writing, 1 Pet. 2:12) “see good works, not hear them”
🐢🐢🐢
(V2) RESPECTFUL & pure CONDUCT
literally “IN FEAR”…God-fearing theme in Peter.
Tom Schreiner points this out well when he says that a wife’s submission is rooted in her fear of God.
IT’S FOR God. not husband. - SUBMISSION to HUSBAND = SUBMISSION to CHRIST.
(T) So, after reiterating this idea of conduct that has become a theme in Peter’s writing, let’s look and see what the content of this conduct should look like

🐢🐢....23 minutes left....🐢🐢

Thought 2: A Christian Woman’s Beauty

3 Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear—
4 but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.
ALL CHRISTIAN WOMEN, take this to HEART!
MIRROR of GOD’S WORD before literal mirror...
NOT SINNING when WEARING MAKEUP etc…
but don’t dress to impress, live to impress
🐢🐢🐢
“imperishable beauty”
Imperishable (in 1 Pet.) -
1. (eternal) inheritance
2. word of gospel…
3. woman’s inner beauty
SHOES BREAK, clothes wear out, we GROW OLD...
A CHRISTIAN WOMAN should grow MORE BEAUTIFUL as she ages!
(Q) “What about me gets the attention of others?”
🐢🐢🐢
Christian Woman’s Adornment = Gentle & quiet spirit = HUMBLE TRUST in GOD. (NOT LITERALLY QUIET)
PRECIOUS (in God’s sight) = extremely valuable/costly.
(T) So, now that Peter has made his case for how a Christian woman should present herself, let’s see how he backs up this claim by looking to the Old Testament

🐢🐢....19 minutes left....🐢🐢

Thought 3: The Example for Christian Women

5 For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands,
6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.
EXAMPLE WOMEN: HOLY & HOPEFUL, 2 themes of Peter’s letter!
SARAH, Abraham’s wife…matriarch of Israel, PROMISED SONS - Isaac & Jesus!!
Abraham, man of faith…walked by faith, Sarah followed by faith!
IMAGINE being MARRIED to Abraham & the CRAZY IDEAS?
(Q)- Any of you have husbands w/ constant crazy ideas?
“Hey Sarah, God spoke to me, we’re moving, etc.”
SHE SUBMITTED, REVERENCING him in her HEART, calling him “lord!”
HER CHILDREN - HER EXAMPLE…FEARING GOD, NOT THINGS of this WORLD...
(T) So, now that Peter has finished discussing the woman’s role, in conclusion, he addresses the men, indicating that they aren’t free to do just whatever they please

🐢🐢....16 minutes left....🐢🐢

Thought 4: The Husband’s Responsibility

7 Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.
Hope NO HUSBANDS NUDGING their wives!
Peter’s WORDS come FROM GOD, TO WOMEN, about WOMEN, & TO MEN, about MEN.
DON’T TELL YOUR WIFE HOW TO WIFE, DON’T TELL YOUR HUSBAND HOW TO HUSBAND.
NOT PICKING SPECKS!
MEN, TAKE INITIATIVE & LEAD..
🐢🐢🐢
“LIKEWISE” - he’s building off the same argument again…LIVING AS EXILES!!
MEN, LIVE w/ UNDERSTANDING -
Grudem: understanding wife, God’s purposes for marriage
Schreiner: God’s expectations for men as Christ-followers...
Personal conclusion: Aim to GROW in UNDERSTANDING of SPOUSE, GOD, & SERVING GOD within marriage.
🐢🐢🐢
MEN, HONOR WIVES (image of God)
GK (honor) It puts forth the idea of someone with status that deserves respect or honor.[1]
SHE’S BEEN PUTTING UP with YOU!
HUSBANDS HONORING WIVES = COUNTER-CULTURAL! (THOSE DAYS)
BELIEVING HUSBANDS, TREAT your WIVES in a WAY that makes you STAND OUT!
🐢🐢🐢
HONOR WIVES as WEAKER VESSEL.
PHYSICAL STRENGTH (generally) & position of submission
MEN, DON’T MISUSE that you’re PHYSICALLY STRONGER.
🐢🐢🐢
JOINT HEIRS, HEIRS W/ YOU…GRACE of LIFE!
WOMEN are NOT LESS-THAN! Receive same eternal inheritance!!
Wayne Grudem summarizes this point nicely when he says, “their wives are still equal to them in spiritual privilege and eternal importance”[1] 🐢🐢🐢
SO THAT, PRAYERS aren’t HINDERED
(Q) Do you ever feel your prayers are hitting the ceiling, God’s back has been turned??
This ACTUALLY HAPPENS!
Prayers being hindered here means that your PRAYERS are MAKING PROGRESS SLOWLY or difficultly, or it can also mean to THWART.[1]
DON’T TREAT WIVES POORLY & EXPECT GOD’S BLESSING.
BROKEN RELATIONSHIP w/ WIFE = BROKEN RELATIONSHIP w/ GOD! 🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢
Big Idea:
So, ultimately what is this passage teaching us today? It’s teaching us that within household relationships, we must continue to exemplify the call to live out our faith as exiles and sojourners.
Intention:
And so, our response to God this morning should be reflecting Christ in our household relationships and thereby leading our family members closer to Christ through our example and conduct…for wives = submission, for men = honor.

🐢🐢....8 minutes left....🐢🐢

Cross/Gospel:

Women, CHRIST = EXAMPLE of SUBMISSION, the FATHER & EARTHLY PARENTS!...
.......
Men, CHRIST = EXAMPLE of LOVING/HONORING/caring for VULNERABLE...
......
Only through His grace & Spirit can we obey these commands.
Don’t try and live out a Christian marriage without Christ!

🐢🐢....6 minutes left....🐢🐢

Takeaways:

HOUSEHOLD RELATIONSHIPS should REFLECT CHRIST (DIFFERENCE)…
wives submitting & husbands honoring...
WOMEN, FOCUS more on INNER BEAUTY than OUTER BEAUTY!
“What gets the attention of others?”
BROKEN RELATIONSHIPS = BROKEN RELATIONSHIP w/ GOD.
